Jonathan Scott is walking through his elaborate holiday decorating process at his and fiancée Zooey Deschanel's L.A. family home.

While chatting with PEOPLE about his and brother Drew's new partnership with Wood Veneer Hub, Jonathan said he and Deschanel always start decking out their recently completely renovated abode in November. The entire "Christmas changeover" takes nearly one week to complete just for the interior decorations, he says.

"I start on the inside because it takes about five or six days for us to do the whole inside," he says, noting that they usually enlist expert Stephen Brown from Glitterville Studios to help bring their vision to life.

He continues, "And then what we do is we wait until actual Thanksgiving has passed and then we change the outdoor decor, so along the street and stuff like that."

Last year, Jonathan gave a tour of their "very whimsical," Winter Wonderland-themed holiday decor in a video posted on his and brother Drew's YouTube channel.

"There are lots of different rules when decorating for the holidays," Jonathan said in the clip. "But, of course, as we know, rules are meant to be broken, so it really depends on your comfort level."

Throughout the tour, colorful trees can be seen carefully placed around the house along with glass ornaments and trinkets. The railings are strung with pink and green baubles, velvet ribbon and leafy garland. On top of some shelves, pink and white branches topped with small lights create a magical forest effect.

Jonathan and Zooey are also big on DIY projects at their house. He highlighted some cardboard mistletoe bunches on display in the home, which he says are a great way to incorporate crafting with kids during the holiday season.

And when it comes to kids, he says it's important to establish "ground rules" regarding any delicate decorations throughout the house.

"One of the really big [rules] is that, if you have little kids or big animals, you want to be careful with stuff that they can knock over and that can shatter, like glass," he advised. "Now, we have a lot of glass, a lot of tinsel; however, we also have some ground rules, and well, the kids are really great at not knocking things over."

Jonathan is soon-to-be-stepdad to Deschanel's two kids — daughter Elsie Otter, 10, and son Charlie Wolf, 8 — whom she shares with ex husband Jacob Pechenik.

The couple, who got engaged in August 2023, clearly go above and beyond with their holiday decor, and they also go all out with the festivities as well.

During an interview with PEOPLE in December 2023, Drew opened up about how his twin brother and his fiancée were planning on making the holiday season extra special that year.

"Because we don't have snow here in L.A., Jonathan got a snow machine, so he's going to be creating a snow sled. So we'll bring [my son] Parker over, and the other kids are going to all be there. That's going to be pretty exciting," said Drew, who shares son Parker, 3, and daughter Piper, 1, with wife Linda Phan.
