Ladd, an Oscar-nominated actress, died on Nov. 3 at the age of 89

Laura Dern shared a tribute to her late mother, actress Diane Ladd, on what would have been her 90th birthday.

Dern shared the message on Instagram on Saturday, Nov. 29, along with a vintage black-and-white photo portrait of Ladd.

"Happy birthday to my hero, the most extraordinary person I have ever known, on what would be her 90th today," Dern, 58, began her post.

She added, "As an artist and human being, you were always loving, always dreaming, always creating, and ever in service for all. I love you, Mom."

Ladd died on Nov. 23 from hypoxic respiratory failure at the age of 89. Dern announced her mom's death in a statement obtained by PEOPLE at the time.

"My amazing hero and my profound gift of a mother, Diane Ladd, passed with me beside her this morning, at her home in Ojai, Calif.," Dern said in the statement.

"She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist and empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created," she added. "We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now."

In a joint 2023 interview with PEOPLE, the pair shared that they had grown extremely close in recent years — in no small part because of a health scare in which doctors told Ladd she might only have six months to live back in 2019.

"We both longed to talk about the things that we've left unsaid in our life together," Dern said while recalling her mother's diagnoses. "The places we didn't go because we didn't want to hurt each other by bringing up heartbreak or trauma."

Ladd added, "I thought I was dying, so Laura and I just told each other everything. Just fixing ourselves and our relationship was a darn good beginning."

During the interview, Ladd also noted that she viewed getting older as a "gift."

"I don't believe in age. How many times around the sun you've been does not necessarily tell you how your bones feel or how much wisdom you've got. Aging gives you a gift if you're ready for it, where the blinders that you've worn all through life start to come off and for the first time, you begin to see there's a big picture," she said.

Ladd's numerous movie and TV credits include Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (and the TV sitcom Alice, based on the 1974 film), Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose. She was nominated for three Oscars and three Emmys.

*Kill Bill* might not be dead after all.

Not only is the iconic, two-part revenge thriller from Quentin Tarantino returning to theaters as a single, uncut film, as the filmmaker initially intended, but a seven-and-a-half-minute "lost chapter" is also finally coming to life in animated form.

The action-packed scene titled "The Lost Chapter: Yuki's Revenge" will be viewable in the massively popular game Fortnite — known for its pop culture crossovers, from Eminem to Marvel to John Wick — on Nov. 30, before making a limited theatrical run.

Though the scene was included in early drafts of the *Kill Bill *script (which you can still read online), Tarantino ultimately decided not to shoot it, citing budget and runtime concerns. But when Epic Games approached him about producing content for Fortnite to promote its Chapter Seven, premiering today, the director took the opportunity to bring it to fruition. Uma Thurman even returned to reprise her starring role as Beatrix Kiddo, with filmmakers using cutting-edge motion capture technology and Epic Games' Unreal Engine to render animation that mirrored her real-life facial expressions and movements.

And, it turns out, Tarantino had such a positive experience working with that style of animation that he's now considering using it to revisit other as-yet unrealized projects that have long been simmering in his mind.

During a special screening of "Yuki's Revenge" at Tarantino's own Vista Theater in Los Angeles last week, the director, seated alongside Thurman, teased two of those ideas.

"I've got other things to do right now, but I had a whole* Kill Bill* idea in my mind when we were doing it, and then I was so wiped out from doing the movie," the director told the audience. "I like the idea of a Bill origin. A story of Bill, about how Bill became Bill and the three godfathers that made Bill: Esteban Vihaio, Pai Mei, and Hattori Hanzō. Will I live long enough to do that? That remains to be seen."**

*Kill Bill Vol. 1 *(2003), and *Kill Bill Vol. 2 *(2004) tell the epic revenge story of Thurman's Kiddo, a.k.a. the Bride, one of six members of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, including their leader and her former lover, Bill (David Carradine). Though much of Bill's history remains shrouded in mystery, three of his former mentors appear throughout the films: Vihaio (Michael Parks), an elderly Mexican pimp and Bill's childhood father figure; Pai Mei (Gordon Liu), an infamous and reclusive kung fu master; and Hanzō (Sonny Chiba), a legendary Japanese swordsmith.

So far, these characters have been introduced through their interactions with Kiddo. If Tarantino decides to make his proposed animated origin story, it would give audiences their first glimpse at a young Bill transforming into the powerful gangland boss he later becomes. Though, of course, after Carradine's death in 2009, the director would need to find another actor to play Bill. In "Yuki's Revenge," Tarantino himself voices the role.

As if that weren't enough to get Tarantino fans buzzing, the auteur also teased revisiting another idea he's long had up his sleeve. When first asked if he could see himself working again with animation and motion-capture, he said, "I could see some world between this and Japanese anime that I could find some happy medium or, you know, between the things that I couldn't physically do, like say the Vega Brothers movie, or something like that."

The director is referring to his dream of making a prequel to his classic films, *Pulp Fiction* and *Reservoir Dogs*, that would tie the movies together through brothers Vincent Vega (played by John Travolta in *Pulp Fiction*) and Vic Vega (played by Michael Madsen in *Reservoir Dogs*).

"I don't think I took it far enough for a story, but I had a premise," Tarantino told CinemaBlend in 2019. "It would have taken place in Amsterdam. So it would have taken place in the time that Vincent was in Amsterdam. Remember in *Pulp Fiction*, he had just come back from Amsterdam, and he was telling the whole story?

"He was running some club for Marcellus," the director continued, referring to the crime boss played by Ving Rhames. "And so, he was probably there for a couple of years. At some point, in his two-year stay in Amsterdam, running some club, Vic shows up to visit him. And it would have been their weekend. Exactly what happens to them or what trouble they get into, I never took it that far."

Tarantino never made the film, saying Travolta and Madsen had gotten too old to play the parts again, and that he would never consider using de-aging technology. But now, after his experience animating "Yuki's Revenge" with Thurman, the director sees an opportunity to revisit the idea — though, as with Carradine, he would need to find another actor to play Vic since Madsen died earlier this year.

Still, as the Bride tells several of her former assassin colleagues in *Kill Bill*, it sounds like Tarantino has some "unfinished business" to attend to. **

This year's Le Bal des Débutantes showcased a slew of glamorous young faces donning haute couture gowns to make their debut, including Hollywood and fashion royalty.

Known simply as Le Bal, the exclusive, invite-only debutante ball can only be described as the Met Gala but for teenagers, scions, heiresses and royals, according to Vogue magazine, which had a firsthand inside look at the big night. The 2025 edition of the debutante ball was held at the Shangri-La Paris hotel, a luxury 5-star hotel near the city's Eiffel Tower, on Saturday, Nov. 29.

This year, the granddaughter of designer Carolina Herrera, Carolina Lansing, and Bronwyn Golden Vance, daughter of actors Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance, made their debut at Le Bal. It's not out of the ordinary either for celebrity offspring to have a presence at the annual event. In years past, Lily Collins, Apple Martin, Ava Philippe, Lori Harvey, Scout Willims and Margaret Qualley have all stepped out for the occasion.

- Josh Brolin says he once considered Donald Trump a pal and that he was "a different guy" before he became president.

- The *Dune* actor befriended Trump around the time they shot *Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps*, from which the *Apprentice* star was cut.

- "There is no greater genius than him in marketing," Brolin said.

Josh Brolin is reflecting on his relationship with Donald Trump before the business mogul moved to the White House.

The *No Country for Old Men* star befriended the U.S. president around the time they filmed Oliver Stone's 2010 *Wall Street* sequel, *Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, *from which Trump was ultimately cut.

"I'm not scared of Trump, because even though he says he's staying forever, it's just not going to happen," Brolin said of the president alluding to a third term in his new interview with *The Independent*. "And if it does, then I'll deal with that moment. But having been a friend of Trump before he was president, I know a different guy."

The *Hail, Caesar* star added that he was fascinated by Trump's development of a luxury hotel "in the middle of a cesspool city" in the late '70s.

"That's interesting to me," he said. "Now it's power unmitigated — it's unregulated."

Brolin also thinks he understands why the former *Apprentice* star has appealed to voters across the country. "There is no greater genius than him in marketing," he said. "He takes the weakness of the general population and fills it."

He continued, "That's why I think a lot of people feel that they have a mascot in him. I think it's much less about Trump than it is about the general population and their need for validation."

Representatives for the White House did not immediately respond to **'s request for comment.

Though he once considered Trump a pal, Brolin rejected his 2020 presidential bid in October 2020 in an impassioned Instagram post.

"I refuse to believe that Donald Trump is our core version of American masculinity," the *Dune* star wrote at the time. "The America that was great was never based on creating hate and conspiracy in order to win. There have been a few, but none has lasted. Donald Trump has lied over 50,000 documented times, but we still are willing to let it go because he speaks to an American demographic that no longer felt masculine."

Last year, Brolin shared a bizarre memory of an interaction he had with the future president at his New York apartment. "I said, 'What's upstairs?' He said, 'Our bedroom,'" he remembered on *In Depth With Graham Bensinger. *"And I said, 'Can I see upstairs?' He said, 'Yeah.' And then nobody moved. And I said, 'Cool. So should we go up?' And he said, 'Yeah.' And then he still didn't move. And I'm thinking, 'What the f--- is happening?'"

Brolin is in the midst of a particularly busy chapter of his career. He can be seen in Edgar Wright's *The Running Man* and Rian Johnson's *Wake Up Dead Man*, both of which are playing now in theaters. Shonda Rhimes said she felt ill-equipped to deal with her early days of fame

The Grey's Anatomy creator spoke about her fear of being famous at the start of her TV career during a 92NY event in October

"It was really startling and shocking to me to be in a position where I was in a corner writing things for other people who should be famous, to discover that people wanted to talk to me or pay attention to me," Rhimes recalled

Shonda Rhimes felt ill-equipped to deal with her early days of fame.

During the Shonda Rhimes in Conversation with Robin Roberts: Year of Yes panel at 92NY in October, the television mogul, 55, opened up about when she first began to gain notoriety as a producer, soon after the premiere of Grey's Anatomy.

"It's so hard to do," Rhimes said of being in the public eye. "I mean, my job was to imagine things."

Challenging the audience to "name a TV showrunner or TV creator who you know their name on sight," she continued, "There's not that many."

"So it was really startling and shocking to me, to be in a position where I was in a corner writing things for other people who should be famous, to discover that people wanted to talk to me or pay attention to me," Rhimes added.

"It was like being stung by a thousand bees for me. It was really stressful," she further explained. "I just didn't have the equipment or the skill to get there."

The writer, who is responsible for hit TV shows including Scandal, Private Practice and more, said she eventually confronted her fears of fame by diving in headfirst.

"I really tried to do small things," she recalled. "I've always said, 'Do the thing that you're afraid of, because the act of doing it undoes the fear really strongly.' "

"I think my first yes was getting a commencement speech in front of 10,000 people, which sounded like the craziest thing I'd ever come up with," Rhimes continued.

According to the showrunner, another one of her first major public appearances came when she went on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

"I let myself go on television and just do the thing," she said. "It was terrifying the whole time. And yet, when I was done, I was like, 'Oh, that wasn't so bad.' "

"It was a lot of me reminding myself — the worst thing that could happen is that I'd fail. You know?" continued Rhimes. "But there are a million other things that can happen that are better than failure that could have happened."

She added, "So, if the worst thing that happens is that you fail, why not do it anyway?"

With two decades of TV experience and fame under her belt, Rhimes said she feels more equipped now than she did at the beginning of her writing career.

"I get more and more comfortable every time, but I think the first time I did an interview where I felt like I was truly being myself was an interview for [the 2015 release of her book, Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand in the Sun and Be Your Own Person] and it was with Oprah [Winfrey]," she recalled.

"I went to her house, I went to the Promised Land, which was the most intimidating thing in the world," continued Rhimes. "And I sat with her, and we did this interview."

According to the producer, that interview marked one of the first times that she truly felt comfortable in what she was saying.

"In that interview, for the first time, I'm just me," she said. "I'm not stressing over what I'm saying, I'm not rethinking everything in my head as I say it."

"I'm not so stressed that, like, I almost can't hear the questions, which was a thing," Rhimes added. "That has been a journey from there. Like, that was the first time I was comfortable, but it wasn't the last time I was a mess. ... We go back and forth — two steps forward, one step back."
