Texas football sets GPA record as Sark's academic push pays off

While the Texas Longhorns are preparing for, what is hopefully, a banner season on the football field, off the field, the Longhorns have reached new heights in the classroom. The team posted a 3.36 composite GPA this spring, a program record.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian has stressed the importance of academics and its link to athletic success. Sark believes it shows personal discipline that transfers to the gridiron, saying, “Who you are some of the time is who you are all of the time!”

“When I got hired in January of 2021, the team GPA was 2.33,” Sarkisian said last season. “We were a 5-7 football team that fall and had zero NFL draft picks. Now, we’re seeing the results both on the field and in the classroom."

The team posted a 3.31 GPA during the spring 2025 semester, setting a new program record at the time. That topped the 3.27 GPA from fall of 2024.

Sark uses the University of Texas' vaulted academic reputation in his recruiting pitch. UT is a Public Ivy and one of the best public schools in the world.

Sarkisian joined the 3rd & Longhorn Podcast this week and laid out how he sells it all to elite recruits.

"I think we've got the best product in the US," he told the podcast hosts. "All the while that's occurring at a Top 5 Public Institution in the United States. Name another school who's getting compared to Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, but on the flip side is getting compared to Georgia, Ohio State, and Alabama on the football field," Sarkisian said.

Not every player makes the NFL. By making sure his players pay attention to academics, Sark is making sure they are set up for a successful future.

Jimmy Kimmel is giving his buddy Stephen Colbert more of the spotlight when he says goodbye to “The Late Show” next week.

Kimmel will not produce a new episode for May 21, “out of deference to Colbert’s sendoff” and will instead let a rerun take over his 11:35 p.m. ET time slot on ABC, LateNighter reported on Monday.

Buzz: Jimmy Kimmel Slams This 'Beyond Nonsensical' Explanation For 'Late Show' Cancellation

Kimmel made the same gesture in 2015 when he didn’t drop a new episode on the night that Colbert’s predecessor, David Letterman, bid farewell to the CBS program.

Colbert’s friend over at NBC, Jimmy Fallon, appears to still be planning to air a new episode of “The Tonight Show” in the 11:35 p.m. ET time slot on May 21.

Fallon and his NBC colleague Seth Meyers will, nonetheless, not air new episodes on Monday when they join Kimmel and fellow late-night heavyweight John Oliver for a “Strike Force Five” reunion on Colbert’s show. (Kimmel isn’t scheduled to air new episodes this week.)

Letterman, meanwhile, is set to return to the Ed Sullivan Theater as a guest on Colbert’s show this coming Thursday.

It marks just the second time that Letterman, who created “The Late Show,” will return to the program since his 2015 departure and the first time since he slammed CBS for what he described as its “gutless” decision last year to can Colbert.

Buzz: Kesha Says She's 'Mostly Celibate' — Except When She's In Italy

He recently put the “lying weasels” at CBS and its Trump-aligned parent company on blast for saying the move was due to purely financial reasons.

“I’m just going to go on record as saying: They’re lying,” Letterman said of network leadership in an interview with The New York Times.

- Stanley Tucci, 65, says that his romance with Felicity Blunt "just sort of made sense" despite their 21-year age gap.

- The *Devil Wears Prada* actor said that he and Blunt "had a lot in common, even though we had nothing in common."

- Tucci said that Blunt, who is Emily Blunt's sister, "changed my life."

Stanley Tucci is reflecting on his marriage.

The *Spotlight* star discussed marrying Felicity Blunt, the sister of his *Devil Wears Prada* costar Emily Blunt, during an interview with Jenna Bush Hager on her podcast *Open Book*. Tucci, who was married to social worker Kathryn Spath from 1995 until she died from cancer in 2009, said that he initially didn't think that he'd ever tie the knot again.

"I wasn't sure that I would ever remarry," Tucci, 65, said on the podcast. "I never thought I would have children again. And when I met her, it just sort of made sense, even though there is this age gap of 21 years. And obviously, I knew her family, or I knew her sister was one of my best friends. And we just hit it off."

Tucci and Felicity first crossed paths at *The Devil Wears Prada*'s premiere in 2006. They were reintroduced at Emily Blunt's wedding to John Krasinski at George Clooney's house in Lake Como, Italy, in 2010, and they began dating shortly thereafter and eventually married in 2012.

The couple welcomed a son together in 2015 and a daughter in 2018. Felicity is also stepmom to Tucci's three children from his previous marriage.

"We had a lot in common, even though we had nothing in common," Tucci told Hager. "And it just sort of stuck. But I think she changed my life in the sense that she gave me a sense of security. She gave my children a sense of security. And she's fun. Like, she's fun to hang out with."

Tucci went on to praise Felicity's worldview and intelligence. "She's incredibly positive, which I am not always," he said on the show. "I mean, her mind is incredible. Her capacity to take in information, not just from a book, but from the world and process it, and turn it into something else is just extraordinary. She's pretty cool."

CLEVELAND (AP) — Byron Buxton doubled off the wall in left-center with one out in the 11th inning, scoring automatic runner Matt Wallner, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Cleveland Guardians 2-1 on Saturday night.

Buxton also drove in Minnesota’s first run and had its only other hit, belting his 22nd career leadoff homer on the third pitch of the game from Tanner Bibee. The Twins and Guardians each finished with two hits.

Cleveland loaded the bases with one out in the ninth and 10th, but Eric Orze (1-1) worked his way out of both jams in his 1 2/3 innings. Luis GarcĆa pitched the 11th for his first save.

Rule 5 Draft selection Peyton Pallette (1-2) allowed one unearned run in two innings as AL Central Division leader Cleveland had its three-game winning streak snapped.

Buxton has 13 homers — all in his last 23 games — and is two behind MLB leaders Aaron Judge of the Yankees and Munetaka Murakami of the White Sox. Minnesota is 20-40 against the Guardians since the start of the 2022 season.

The Guardians tied it at 1-all in the fourth when JosĆ© RamĆrez singled off Joe Ryan, stole second base and scored on Kyle Manzardo’s hit up the middle. Ryan worked six innings, giving up two hits.

Bibee, who has five losses and four no-decisions this season, struck out a season-high nine over six innings.

In the sixth, Bibee collided with catcher Austin Hedges when both were attempting to grab a popup by Brooks Lee. Hedges dropped the ball, Bibee was charged with the error and Lee ran to second base, but was stranded there.

The first pitch was delayed by 2 hours and 6 minutes because of heavy thunderstorms.

- Shane Gillis and Chelsea Handler traded barbs on Sunday during *The Roast of Kevin Hart*.

- Gillis called Handler a "Zionist" and noted her past dinner with Jeffrey Epstein.

- Handler fired back at Gillis over the racist language that got him fired from *Saturday Night Live*.

The insults were flying at Netflix's star-studded *The Roast of Kevin Hart* on Sunday night, and things really went up a level when Shane Gillis introduced Chelsea Handler ahead of her set.

Gillis said that Handler is a "Zionist," adding, "I'm not saying that's good or bad... Speaking of dead kids, she's a big fan of abortions," he continued. "Chelsea's been scraped more times than the grill at Benihana."

Gillis then transitioned into Handler previously attending a dinner party with a pretty infamous collection of men.

“Speaking of tossing tiny shrimp into a child's mouth, Chelsea Handler went to dinner at Jeffrey Epstein's house in 2010," Gillis shared. "It wasn't a big party, there were like seven people there. Prince Andrew and Woody Allen were there."

Handler has previously addressed the circumstances of that questionable meal. “I did go to dinner at Jeffrey Epstein’s house,” Handler told Rob Lowe on his podcast. “I didn’t know who Jeffrey Epstein was. I don’t know what year it was, but it was a long time ago."

Handler said she attended with Katie Couric, and acknowledged that the group at the home of the businessman who was convicted in 2019 of sex trafficking minors included Allen, his wife Soon-Yi Previn, Charlie Rose, and noted Epstein acquaintance Prince Andrew.

"We had dinner, and it was so awkward and so weird,” the comedian said. “I was like, 'What are we doing here?' And then I asked Woody Allen how he and Soon-Yi met, and that was when I left.” (Allen and Previn first met when she was a child through Allen's former partner Mia Farrow, who is Previn's adopted mother.)

Chelsea Handler claims RFK Jr. and Cheryl Hines sold her 'disaster' house: 'Most toxic environment'

Lorne Michaels reflects on Shane Gillis 'SNL' casting backlash: 'The overreaction to it was so stunning'

Lorne Michaels attends the Clooney Foundation For Justice's "The Albies" on September 28, 2023 in New York City.; Shane Gillis attends the 17th Annual Stand Up For Heroes Benefit presented by Bob Woodruff Foundation and NY Comedy Festival at David Geffen Hall on November 06, 2023 in New York City

But Handler came out firing right back at Gillis when she took the podium. Before he was one of the biggest stand-ups working, Gillis was hired as a cast member of *Saturday Night Live*, only to be fired four days later. (*SNL* boss Lorne Michaels has since revealed that he didn't want to axe Gillis.)

The move followed an outcry over videos and audio recordings of Gillis using racial and homophobic slurs on his podcast. In a year-old video from *Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast*, Gillis made racist jokes about Chinese people and culture, saying, “Chinatown’s f—ing nuts. Let the f—ing ch–ks live there, huh?” He later said that his conversation with cohost Matt McCusker is “nice racism, good racism.”

“Shane, just so you know, Judaism and Zionism are two different things," Handler explained to him. "Kind of like how Chinatown and Koreatown are two different things, but your favorite slur works in both places. Shane has been accused of being anti-Asian, which is ironic considering he has the complexion and physique of a steamed dumpling."

*The Roast of Kevin Hart* is now available to stream on Netflix.

- Erin Murphy said that *Bewitched* ended abruptly after planning to return for another season after a hiatus.

- However, she said she was "excited to go to school full-time" when the show concluded.

- Murphy also said that she enjoyed auditioning for other projects when the series was over.

Erin Murphy is reflecting on *Bewitched* ending when she was 8 years old.

The actress discussed playing Tabitha Stephens, the daughter of Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) and Darrin (Dick York/Dick Sargent) on the sitcom during a conversation with Billy Corgan on his podcast *The Magnificent Others*.

When Corgan asked if it was difficult for her to "detach" from her working family when the show ended in 1972, Murphy replied, "It was and it wasn't."

The actress explained that the show went on hiatus with the expectation of another season approaching, but the show's creative team ultimately decided not to return for more episodes, which meant that she never had an opportunity for a proper farewell.

"We went on our break, and I had plans to go to Girl Scout camp, hang out with my friends," she explained. "So we all got telegrams and letters saying, 'We have decided to not to do the show.' [Director] Bill Asher and Liz were going through a divorce, and she especially decided not to do the show anymore. So there was no goodbye."

The unusual circumstances of the show's conclusion softened the emotional blow for Murphy. "It was hard maybe in the way that, 'Oh, I miss those people. I wish I saw them more,'" she reflected. "But I was 8 years old. I was excited to go to school full-time. I liked being a kid. So that part didn't hit me maybe until later."

Murphy also said that she was glad that she was free to pursue other acting opportunities once the show ended. "The way my contract was written, and maybe some of the others at the time — I wasn't allowed to do other acting jobs while I was on *Bewitched*," she said. "So I couldn't audition for other shows or movies or commercials or anything. So that's why during the time on the show, I only did the show. So when *Bewitched* ended, then I started auditioning for commercials."

Auditions proved to be a positive experience for Murphy on the whole, in part because of the socializing that transpired in casting offices. "I liked doing it," she said. "I liked that there were friends that I would only see at auditions, like, 'Oh, Jodie Foster is here! Kim Richards is here!' That kind of thing. So I did like it."

Murphy also said that she felt a degree of autonomy over her acting career from a young age. "There were times I felt like I had a say," she explained. "When *Bewitched* ended, I went to Girl Scout camp. A call came in to do *The Waltons*, and I don't remember the exact conversation, but it was almost like, 'We can pick you up at camp to go do this!' And I chose to stay at camp, and they let me do that."

Child stardom didn't faze Murphy because she has no memories prior to becoming a household name. "Anywhere I would go as a child, people knew who I was, like 'Hi, Erin!' Like, everyone knew who I was," she said. "And that seemed normal because that's all I knew."

***Get your daily dose of entertainment news, celebrity updates, and what to watch with our EW Dispatch newsletter.***

The actress never felt any negative social implications from her time on the show. "Maybe it was because *Bewitched* was a show people loved so much: I never had bullying," she said. "Kids at school were nice to me. And I have always felt almost an obligation to maybe be nicer than others because of that."

You can watch the full conversation between Murphy and Corgan above.

Joan Crawford was portrayed as an abusive mom in her daughter Christina's memoir and the subsequent film, Mommie Dearest

The memoir came out a year after Crawford's death, but those close to her rejected some of the claims made

During an appearance on Nostalgia Tonight with Joe Sibilia, entertainment historian Steve Randisi opened up about how Crawford's first husband, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., reacted to negative talk about the actress

Joan Crawford had a fierce defender in her first husband.

Appearing on Nostalgia Tonight with Joe Sibilia, entertainment historian Steve Randisi spoke about his friendship with Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Despite their split, Randisi said that Fairbanks "loved his ex-wife," to whom he was married from 1929 to 1933.

He continued, "They were good friends. They remained very, very friendly towards each other. She always sent him birthday cards, Christmas cards, and you could not say... the slightest negative comment about Joan Crawford when you were in the presence of Douglas Fairbanks Jr.”

Fairbanks would often refute ideas that Crawford was cold and cruel, which stemmed from his daughter Christine's tell-all memoir of shocking child abuse, Mommie Dearest. Randisi recalled mentioning the movie to Fairbanks in 1990 and said he could immediately sense Fairbanks’ discomfort.

"I could tell by the expression on his face," Randisi recalled. "And I said, 'Oh, no, no, no, no, I'm not going to say anything bad.' "

Crawford adopted Christina in Las Vegas in 1939, per The Guardian. The move came after her second marriage, to Franchot Tone, came to an end. At the time, it was illegal in California for a single woman to adopt, according to a 2010 retrospective on Crawford in The New Yorker.

Fairbanks was among those in Crawford's life who believed the actress was misrepresented by her daughter in both the memoir and its subsequent film adaptation.

“When I mentioned the book and the film Mommie Dearest to Mr. Fairbanks, he shook his head and he said, ‘No,’ ” Randisi shared. “‘That story is about somebody that I did not know.’ So he was dismissive of that.”

Many people in Hollywood came to Crawford’s defense, but Christina has not backed down from the claims. After the book, Christina became an advocate for children of parents with alcoholism and those who have suffered abuse. She has testified in federal hearings and advised Los Angeles County when it reorganized its family courts.
