JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel says the remains of the final hostage in Gaza have been recovered, clearing the way for the next phase of the ceasefire that stopped the Israel-Hamas war.

Monday's announcement came a day after Israel's government said the military was conducting a "large-scale operation" in a cemetery in northern Gaza to locate the remains of Ran Gvili.

The return of all remaining hostages, living or dead, has been a key part of the Gaza ceasefire's first phase, and Gvili's family had urged Israel's government not to enter the second phase until his remains were recovered and returned.

Israel and Hamas have been under pressure from ceasefire mediators including Washington to move into the second phase of the U.S.-brokered truce, which took effect on Oct. 10.

Israel had repeatedly accused Hamas of dragging its feet in the recovery of the final hostage. Hamas had said it had provided all the information it had about Gvili's remains, and accused Israel of obstructing efforts to search for them in areas of Gaza under Israeli military control.

Israel's military had said the large-scale operation to locate Gvili's remains was "in the area of the Yellow Line" that divides the territory.

The ceasefire deal aims to wind down the war that was sparked by the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, that killed about 1,200 people and saw 251 taken hostage. Gvili, a 24-year-old police officer known affectionately as "Rani," was killed while fighting Hamas militants during the attack.

Before Gvili's remains were recovered, 20 living hostages and the remains of 27 others had been returned to Israel since the ceasefire, most recently in early December. Israel in exchange has released the bodies of hundreds Palestinians to Gaza.

The next phase of the 20-point ceasefire plan has called for creating an international stabilization force, forming a technocratic Palestinian government and disarming Hamas.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP's earlier story follows below.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli teams were combing through a Gaza cemetery Monday for the remains of the final hostage in Gaza, the military said, after Hamas claimed it had done all required of it under the ceasefire agreement to search the side of the territory not controlled by troops.

The search marked a dramatic last-ditch effort by Israel to find the body of Ran Gvili as Washington and other mediators apply pressure to move forward with the U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement.

The clearest sign of progress would be Israel opening the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt for Palestinians to enter and exit the territory. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office says Israel will open the crossing once the search for Gvili is finished.

Israeli fire, meanwhile, killed two Palestinians in Gaza, health authorities said, and Israel's Supreme Court considered a petition to allow the foreign press independent access to Gaza.

Israel says the search for Gvili's remains could last days

A military official said that the search for Gvili's remains began over the weekend in the areas of Shuja'iyya, Daraj and Tuffah, based on intelligence. The official said troops were joined by rabbis and dental experts to help identify Gvili. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing an operation still underway.

According to two Gaza City residents, the search took place in a cemetery in the Tuffah neighborhood, which includes hundreds of bodies. The residents, who asked to be unidentified for fear of reprisal, said Israeli forces were digging graves in the Batsh Cemetery, pulling bodies out before leaving them in the open.

Israeli military officials were quoted in local media as saying the operation could take days to complete.

Hamas had searched for Gvili's body on the side of the ceasefire line currently occupied by most of Gaza's Palestinians.

Israeli troops control the eastern portion of Gaza, under the agreement. The militant group said Sunday it had given mediators all the information it had about Gvili's location and claimed Israel was searching one of the sites it had specified, across the ceasefire line where the militant group is not permitted.

The return of all remaining hostages, alive or dead, has been a central part of the first phase of the ceasefire that took effect on Oct. 10. Before Monday, the previous hostage was recovered in early December.

Also key to the agreement is opening the Rafah crossing, which Palestinians see as their lifeline to the world. The crossing remained closed Monday. It has been largely shut for entry to and exit from Gaza since May 2024, but for a small period in early 2025.

Gvili's family has urged Netanyahu's government not to enter the ceasefire's second phase until his remains are returned. But pressure has been building, and the Trump administration has already declared in recent days that the second phase is underway.

Palestinians killed in Gaza

Israeli forces on Monday fatally shot a man in Gaza City's Tuffah neighborhood, according to Shifa Hospital, which received the body. The man was close to an area where the military has launched the search operation for Gvili, the hospital said.

Another man was killed in the eastern side of Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, according to Al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital, which received his body. The circumstances of his death were not immediately clear.

More than 480 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire since Oct. 10, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. The ministry, which is part of the Hamas-led government, maintains detailed casualty records that are seen as generally reliable by U.N. agencies and independent experts.

Israel's top court considers petition to open Gaza for international journalists

The Foreign Press Association on Monday asked Israel's Supreme Court to allow journalists to enter Gaza freely and independently.

The FPA, which represents dozens of global news organizations, has been fighting for more than two years for independent media access to Gaza. Israel has barred reporters from entering Gaza independently since the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas, which triggered the war, saying entry could put both journalists and soldiers at risk.

The army has offered journalists brief, occasional visits under strict military supervision.

FPA lawyers told the three judge panel that the restrictions are not justified and that with aid workers moving in and out of Gaza, journalists should be allowed in as well. They also said the tightly controlled embeds with the military are no substitute for independent access. The judges are expected to rule in the coming days.

LONDON (AP) — The European Union opened a formal investigation into Elon Musk's social media platform X on Monday after his artificial intelligence chatbot Grok spewed nonconsensual sexualized deepfake images on the platform.

European regulators also widened a separate, ongoing investigation into X's recommendation systems after the platform said it would switch to Grok's AI system to choose which posts users see.

The scrutiny from Brussels comes after Grok sparked a global backlash by allowing users through its AI image generation and editing capabilities to undress people, putting females in transparent bikinis or revealing clothing. Researchers said some images appeared to include children. Some governments banned the service or issued warnings.

The 27-nation EU's executive said it was looking into whether X has done enough as required by the bloc's digital regulations to contain the risks of spreading illegal content such as "manipulated sexually explicit images."

That includes content that "may amount to child sexual abuse material," the European Commission said. These risks have now "materialized," the commission said, exposing the bloc's citizens to "serious harm."

Regulators will examine whether Grok is living up to its obligations under the Digital Services Act, the bloc's wide-ranging rule book for keeping internet users safe from harmful content and products.

In response to a request for comment, an X spokeswoman directed The to an earlier statement that the company remains "committed to making X a safe platform for everyone" and that it has "zero tolerance" for child sexual exploitation, nonconsensual nudity, and unwanted sexual content.

The X statement from Jan. 14 also said it would stop allowing users to depict people in "bikinis, underwear or other revealing attire," but only in places where it has been deemed illegal.

"Non-consensual sexual deepfakes of women and children are a violent, unacceptable form of degradation," Henna Virkkunen, an executive vice president at the commission, said in a statement.

"With this investigation, we will determine whether X has met its legal obligations under the DSA, or whether it treated rights of European citizens — including those of women and children - as collateral damage of its service," said Virkkunen, who oversees tech sovereignty, security and democracy.

Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI launched Grok's image tool last summer. But the problem began snowballing only late last month when Grok seemingly granted a large number of user requests to modify images posted by others. The problem was amplified both because Musk pitches his chatbot as an edgier alternative with fewer safeguards than rivals, and because Grok's responses on X are publicly visible, and can therefore be easily spread.

The EU investigation covers only Grok's service on X, and not Grok's website and standalone app. That's because the DSA applies only to the biggest online platforms.

There's no deadline for the bloc to resolve the case, which could end in either X pledging to change its behavior or a hefty fine.

In December Brussels issued X with a 120-million euro (then-$140 million) fine as part of the earlier ongoing DSA investigation, for shortcomings including blue checkmarks that broke the rules on "deceptive design practices" that risked exposing users to scams and manipulation.

The bloc has also been scrutinizing X over allegations that Grok generated antisemitic material and has asked the site for more information.

Malaysia and Indonesia blocked access to Grok earlier this month in response to the controversy, becoming the first countries to do so.

On Friday, Malaysian authorities said they lifted the temporary restriction after the company implemented additional security and preventive measures, without giving further details. Malaysian regulators said they met last week with X's representatives and would continue to monitor the situation.

Jan 26 (Reuters) - A powerful winter storm sweeping across much of the United States forced airlines to cancel thousands of flights and delay hundreds on Monday, as freezing rain and heavy snowfall disrupted travel and snarled transportation networks.

About 3,800 flights were canceled and over 1,000 were ‌delayed as of early Monday, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware, following more than 11,000 cancellations reported on Sunday.

The number of cancellations and delays ‌was expected to rise as the day progressed.

Low pressure south of New England is expected to move east over the Atlantic on Monday, bringing heavy snow to parts of the Northeast and freezing rain across sections of the Mid-Atlantic, the U.S. National Weather Service said.

Snow is also expected along the Appalachian region, while rain will spread along the Southeast coast as a cold front moves offshore, ‌the agency said.

American Airlines accounted for the largest share of disruptions on Monday, with over 600 flights canceled and about 135 delayed, followed by Republic Airways, JetBlue Airways and ‍Delta Air Lines.

Shares of American Airlines, Delta Air and United Airlines fell nearly 1% each in premarket trading.

The disruptions also left thousands of travel plans in limbo. Passengers inundated carriers with queries on social media platforms such as X to seek clarity on flight schedules.

The Federal Aviation Administration said in an advisory that weather-related constraints, including snow, freezing ‌rain and low visibility, were affecting major hubs such as Boston and the New York-area airspace.

The agency said ground stops and delay programs could be imposed through the afternoon at airports including LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy International, Philadelphia International, Newark Liberty International and Washington Dulles International if conditions worsen.

Major U.S. carriers rolled out sweeping travel waivers and flexible re-booking options to assist passengers whose travel plans were disrupted by the cancellations.

Airline operations are highly interconnected, meaning cancellations can leave aircraft and crews out of position, complicating efforts to restore normal flight schedules.

International operations were also affected by the extreme weather. Dutch carrier KLM said some of its U.S.-bound flights were disrupted over the weekend, but added that all services to the country were expected to operate normally on ‍Monday.

ROADS BATTERED, THOUSANDS WITHOUT POWER

The storm also impeded road travel. The Federal Emergency Management Agency warned that driving conditions could become dangerous as blizzard-like conditions, strong winds and ice spread further.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of customers across several U.S. states, from Tennessee to the Carolinas, reported power outages, with Tennessee reporting the most cases.

More than 820,000 customers were without electricity as of ‌early hours on Monday, according to data from PowerOutage.us.

A piece of advice for Roger Goodell, Adam Silver and any other sports official thinking of joining President Donald Trump at the White House this week for some party planning.

Read the room.

Trump's goon squads are gunning down U.S. citizens and using a 5-year-old in a blue bunny hat as bait for their overreaching immigration raids. Much of the country is furious and looking for someone — anyone — to have a spine and say this is not OK. Now is not the time to be seen indulging Trump's latest visions of grandeur, even if he claims they're in celebration of America's 250th birthday.

The Athletic reported last week that the commissioners of the four major men's sports were going to visit the White House, possibly as early as Tuesday, to hear Trump's ideas for incorporating the leagues into plans for America 250. As anyone who has paid even the slightest bit of attention to this administration knows, the meeting would turn into surreality TV, with Trump inflating his accomplishments, airing his grievances and expecting the commissioners to fawn over him.

If they need convincing of how poorly that would go over with the general public right now, look at the reaction to Apple CEO Tim Cook going to the White House for movie night when Alex Pretti's body was still warm.

White House visit would be seen as endorsement

The owners who Goodell, Silver, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and MLB commissioner Rob Manfred serve are overwhelmingly conservative and many are Trump supporters. It would surprise no one if the commissioners are, as well.

But this is not about politics. Truly. It's about not pretending everything is normal when it is not. It's about preventing their leagues from becoming the focus of Americans' anger.

Go to the White House, and the leagues will be seen as taking the side of an administration that has declared open season on its own people. Go to the White House, and they'd all but ensure their games would become an epicenter for protests in the coming weeks.

Does Goodell really want thousands of angry Americans marching outside the Super Bowl and claiming the spotlight from the NFL's marquee event? Does Silver really want to antagonize his players, who have not hesitated to take a stand on the right side of history?

"Alex Pretti was murdered," Indiana Pacers All-Star Tyrese Haliburton said in a post on X on Jan. 25.

Even Major League Baseball, with its large number of players from Latin America, cannot assume this wouldn't rub its fans, and players, the wrong way.

Leagues already celebrating America's 250th

It's a needless risk, especially since the leagues can celebrate this country's founding on their own. The NFL and NBA are, in fact, already doing it.

"America 250" was painted on the sideline near each of the end zones at the AFC title game in Denver, just as it's been at NFL games the last three weekends. The footballs were embossed with "America" and a red, white and blue ribbon with "250" below it.

The NBA said last week it will do service and volunteer projects throughout the year. The country could use more of that, the leagues working to strengthen our bonds rather than tearing them apart.

When athletes call out racism, homophobia or our society's brutalization of the most marginalized, they are almost always met with a howl of "Stick to sports!" If ever that instruction needed to be heeded, it's now.

A White House visit, when this country is seething, would not be seen as the polite cost of doing business. The commissioners would be seen as being complicit, and they would saddle their leagues with that shame forever.

DENVER – Mother Nature took care of the atmosphere with a swirl of flurries that stormed throughout the second half during the Jan. 25 AFC championship game, and the New England Patriots were about to put the game on ice.

One more third down run, a punt, some good defense, and the Pats would be off to Super Bowl 60.

But that's not why Drake Maye is in the running – pun intended – for the NFL MVP award next month.

Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels called for a run on third-and-7. Maye faked the handoff instead and streaked the opposite direction, desperate to find the corner and first-down yardage. Broncos linebacker Jonah Elliss pursued him from behind and appeared bound to catch up and stop him short of the marker.

Those 23-year-old legs moved too quickly, Maye converted the first down to set up "victory formation" in a 10-7 win over the Denver Broncos, and he's now the third QB under the age of 24 to make the Super Bowl, joining Ben Roethlisberger and Dan Marino. He also defeated three top-five defenses (in terms of yards allowed per game) en route to making the big game.

To celebrate the game-clinching first down, he head-butted his buddy and blindside protector, left tackle Will Campbell, who stands at 6-foot-6, weighs 320 pounds and had the excitement of a kid on Christmas morning.

"That was probably the hardest head bump of my life," Maye said after the game.

Those defenses have also sacked him 15 times, five in each game. He has some bumps and bruises, he said, but so does everyone else on his team.

"But hey," he said, "that's what it takes."

1 / 9See snow fly during frigid Broncos-Patriots AFC championship gameA Denver Broncos fgroundsmen clears the field from snow during the second half in the 2026 AFC Championship Game at Empower Field at Mile High on Jan. 25, 2026, in Denver.

Now Maye and the Patriots have two weeks to heal before facing the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 60 in Santa Clara, California.

"Props to this team, man," Maye said. "Went after it tonight. We're going to the Super Bowl, that sounds pretty good, that sounds pretty cool. Proud of this team, proud of the defense. We didn't play our best ball in the first half, and in the second half came out and just battled the elements … it was a gritty win. Our defense stepped up. It was fun to watch."

With passing game grounded, Maye's athleticism took over

Maye finished 10-for-21 for 86 passing yards as the game turned into a whiteout in the second half thanks to snow and wind. He feasted against the Broncos on the ground, though, moving the chains by picking up first downs with his legs. His 6-yard touchdown tied the game in the first half.

"That's the great thing about Drake, the ability to extend plays, and if it's not there, gain chunks," Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said. "He's done that most of the year. Again, we'll have to get a lot of things corrected and we'll have to play our best football game in two weeks if we want to finish as champions."

No coach will necessarily use Maye's three postseason performances as "teach tape," but if playing winning football is all that matters at this stage in the season, then by all means, fire up the projector.

"I think we still haven't played our best football yet in these playoffs," Maye said. "I'm looking forward to seeing that and hopefully having that click and win the Super Bowl. That would be pretty cool."

Three of the Patriots' longest plays against Denver were Maye scrambles. The other two were receptions by Mack Hollins, who returned for the first time in more than a month after suffering an ankle injury. The highlight was a flea-flicker to Hollins that went for 31 yards.

Against the Los Angeles Chargers in the wild-card round, Maye ran for 67 yards and set a Patriots record for most rushing yards in a game by a quarterback.

"I mean, he is a tremendous athlete," tight end Hunter Henry said. "It's a threat, and to be that mobile and be able to run the way he does, see things and extend plays and all that is, is a big, big advantage for us. You know, he's a tremendous player, tremendous competitor. For him to make a lot of plays with his legs today was big."

Right tackle Morgan Moses, 34, said Maye keeps his teammates in the game – with his production – and level-headed – with his attitude in the huddle.

"Man, we got a hell of a quarterback," said Moses, who blocked for Lamar Jackson during Jackson's second MVP season with the Baltimore Ravens.

Mistake-free football breaks Maye's sloppy playoff streak

Maye came under fire after the first two rounds of the postseason for his sloppy handling of the football. It was warranted criticism. He put the ball on the ground six times and was lucky to lose it only half the time. In this game, center Garrett Bradbury said, taking care of the football was the difference in the game – Broncos quarterback Jarrett Stidham's fatal backward pass leading to Maye's game-tying touchdown.

Bradbury said the ball slipped out of his hands when he would crouch down to snap it. That Maye had no mistakes was impressive, he said.

"We'll ride with him any day of the week," Bradbury said.

Even if Maye changes the play and doesn't tell his offensive line.

"That's got to be demoralizing for a defense," Bradbury said.

In a way, Maye exacted his revenge on a franchise responsible for some childhood trauma. A North Carolina guy who bleeds Tar-Heel blue, Maye attended Super Bowl 50 as a boy. Cam Newton's Carolina Panthers team lost to the Broncos in a defensive-minded affair.

"It's full circle," Maye said. "My dad, when I was maybe in seventh grade, said if the Panthers made it we were going to go. It was heartbreaking."

Ten years and one AFC championship trophy later, Maye was the one breaking Broncos fans' hearts.

SEATTLE – Linebacker Ernest Jones delivered a message to the Seahawks defense in the huddle as they clung to four-point lead on fourth-and-4 late in the fourth quarter. The Los Angeles Rams had driven 84 yards down the field and were six yards away from a go-ahead score.

"Everything we worked for in this moment," Jones revealed what he said in the huddle to USA TODAY Sports. "I'll be damned if you don't give it your all right here."

On the defense's most consequential play, Matthew Stafford looked around to find an open pass catcher. He fired a pass to Terrance Ferguson as cornerback Devon Witherspoon blanketed the tight end to break up the play.

Turnover on downs.

The Seahawks took over possession of the football and were able to drain the clock before a final Rams' desperation drive ran out of time.

A 31-27 score preserved. The Seahawks stamped their ticket to Santa Clara for Super Bowl 60.

The NFC championship game wasn't a showcase by Seattle's top scoring defense by any means. The unit gave up 479 total yards and 27 points. But on one of the game's most decisive plays, the defense lived up to its "Dark Side" nickname.

"You talk about a group of guys who play together as one. A group of guys that are just gonna battle no matter what the circumstances are and who got each other back. The hardest times, the good times and the bad times. We stay together," Witherspoon told USA TODAY Sports. "Once you come to that dark place, it's a hard place to play. You don't want to see us in there."

In a game in which offense took centerstage, including an electric 28-point third quarter, the Seahawks' formidable defense came through when it mattered most. In what was part of a scoreless fourth quarter.

Seattle's win exemplified why they've won 16 total games during the entire year en route to Super Bowl 60. Sam Darnold, Jaxon Smith-Njigba and the offense continuously answered when the Rams would go on a scoring drive. Dareke Young recovered a muffed punt on special teams and the defense stiffened to get the biggest stop of the contest.

"Every team talks about wanting to be good in all three phases. I think we truly accomplished that this season," Seahawks defensive lineman Leonard Williams said.

The Seahawks made winning plays in all three phases. Their ability to make winning plays on offense, defense and special teams was highlighted in two straight postseason wins. And as a result, the franchise has advanced to itsfourth Super Bowl and first Super Bowl appearance since the 2014 season.

"Sometimes it was defense making the play, a lot of times it was offense coming in making the play (and) special teams," Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said. "That's what we believe. We believe that our team is our edge."

The "edge" the Seahawks currently possess is the preeminent reason why they are the favorite to hoist the Lombardi Trophy this season.

SEATTLE – Sam Darnold was just minutes removed from securing his first Super Bowl trip – as a starter, more on that important distinction later – and he'd already wrangled an apology out of me.

In the aftermath of a drama-filled, 31-27 defeat of the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC championship game, which gave Darnold's Seattle Seahawks the rubber match in their epic thrill-ogy of games against their NFC West rivals this season, I asked him about his personal journey from the New York Jets quarterback who infamously admitted "seeing ghosts" amid a four-interception debacle against the New England Patriots on "Monday Night Football" more than six years ago into the two-time Pro Bowler he is now – and ahead of a much bigger game against the Pats.

"Yeah, I almost forgot about that. So thanks," Darnold cracked back good-naturedly.

Sam, I am sorry. (And you most certainly weren't sorry in what was probably the best football performance of your life.)

"No, you're good," he smiled, while indulging my question with a moment of reflection.

"There was a lot that I didn't know back then, so I'm just going to continue to learn and grow in this great game. There's a lot of stuff that I can do better from today – I feel like I'm missing throws out there that I shouldn't miss, there were some things offensively that I feel like we can do better. We're always looking to get better, I'm always looking to get better. So, that's the great part about this game – you win an NFC championship, and you win games throughout the season, but there's always ways you can look to get better."

It's a very Darnold answer for a guy who's overcome so much adversity in eight NFL seasons – upbeat, hopeful, forward-leaning. All it was missing was a dollop of credit to his teammates, but he doled out plenty of that Sunday night as well.

I never could logically grasp why the Jets gave up on an obviously talented, always centered young guy − one who's been beloved in every locker room he's graced. Why draft Zach Wilson in 2021 − I know, reset the QB contractual clock − when you could've actually built something around Darnold, maybe by taking Penei Sewell or Ja'Marr Chase or Micah Parsons instead. But nope, Darnold was dealt to the Carolina Panthers for a package that included a second-round pick and a whole lot of nothing else that didn't make the Jets any better. He then had cups of coffee with the San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings, who miraculously didn't keep him in the aftermath of his 2024 breakout season. Oops.

The Seahawks were only too happy to reel in the perennial castoff who whipped an excellent Rams defense Sunday, 346 yards and three TD passes spilling off his right arm – with nary a turnover in the signature performance of his career. And it was achieved with a lingering oblique injury suffered before Seattle's divisional playoff round victory over the Niners.

"I'm not a quarterback expert, but that's some high-powered quarterbacking going on in that game by number 14. For sure," said Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald, who said Darnold barely threw the ball in practice in the days leading up to 'Hawks-Rams, part three.

"It should go down as one of the best performances in playoff history."

And it might.

There was Darnold's 51-yard completion to Rashid Shaheed on Seattle's opening drive that set up Kenneth Walker's 2-yard touchdown run. There was the 42-yard shot to Darnold's favorite target, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, that preceded a 14-yard TD strike to JSN three players later – staking Seattle to a 17-13 halftime lead it would never relinquish.

When the Seahawks seemed to stall after opening the second half with the ball, Darnold made the Rams pay for their latest special teams error – a muffed punt – by hitting rarely used Jake Bobo for a 17-yard TD on the very next play. And though LA wouldn't go away, neither would Darnold, who hooked up with ex-Rams Super Bowl hero Cooper Kupp for one more TD later in the period.

"He showed us exactly who we always thought he was," said Seahawks defensive lineman Leonard Williams, a USC product like Darnold and a teammate of his with those lowly Jets. "I mean, since Day 1, I think this whole organization, this whole team, everybody in this locker room trusted him – regardless of the doubts or ups and downs or anything like that we've had throughout the season. That's one thing that's always stayed true is our trust in our quarterback. He's a great leader and, I mean, he really saved us today.

"I'm so happy for him," Williams continued. "To show up in a game like this, when there's so many doubters, it's big time for him."

And now Darnold is truly headed for the big time as Seattle prepares to face New England in Super Bowl 60. It's an opportunity for the third overall pick – by the Jets – of the vaunted 2018 QB draft class to become the first passer of that draft to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. Not Josh Allen. Not Lamar Jackson. Not Baker Mayfield. Sam Darnold.

Asked how it felt to be the first QB from that group to reach Super Sunday, Darnold, now on his fifth NFL team, remained in rare form with another zinger.

"I actually made it in '23 as well, when I was in San Francisco. So …," he grinned, referencing his one-year stop in Kyle Shanahan's halfway house for QBs, where Darnold backed up Brock Purdy.

"No, it's unbelievable. Obviously those are great players. But it's more so the team, just the hard work that we've put in throughout the season. … We take it day by day, and then that's the beauty about this team and these guys in that locker room, this coaching staff."

And speaking of that staff, you can bet there's no one they'd rather have than Darnold, who's galvanized this group from the moment he signed with Seattle last March, when he replaced Geno Smith.

Macdonald left nothing to the imagination when I asked him about the narrative of the Seahawks being a dominant team – so long as Darnold doesn't undermine them with costly mistakes, like another four-INT game he had in a loss to the Rams in Week 11.

Macdonald responded to my query by exclaiming: "Everyone wants to make a narrative about this guy. But it's like, he's been the same guy since he walked in the door.

"You don't want me writing the stories because I will not write the narratives that are out there. I'd be really boring. … His teammates love him. And he's competitive as crap. And he's tough. And he's really talented. And he's the man – that would be the story, so don't let me write the story."

I've got this one, Coach. Hopefully it's not boring. And it stands to reason Darnold won't be, either, two weeks from now – when he gets his biggest opportunity yet to certify those ghosts are exorcised and that he is indeed "the man."
