Kevin Hart is defending the comedian behind one of the most shocking jokes at his Netflix roast.

In an interview on "The Breakfast Club," the "Jumanji" star, 46, addressed the backlash some of the participants in Netflix's "Roast of Kevin Hart" have faced for their material. In particular, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe has been criticized for a joke about how George Floyd, who was killed by former police officer Derek Chauvin in 2020, is "looking up at us all, laughing so hard that he can't breathe."

Hart said on "The Breakfast Club" that while Hinchcliffe's joke about Floyd wasn't "tasteful," he "wasn't shocked," adding that Hinchcliffe "arguably had the best set, or one of the best sets," of the roast.

Kevin Hart attends The Roast of Kevin Hart on May 10, 2026, in Inglewood, California.

"Tony told a joke," he said. "It wasn't a tasteful joke to us. We didn't like it. OK. ... We move on. I don't understand why we stand on a hill, and it becomes this big thing ... It doesn't have to be that. It literally is, either you're a fan of this level of content or you're not. And if you're not a fan, then you don't watch it."

Pointing to other shocking jokes that were made at the roast, including one from Pete Davidson about the killing of Charlie Kirk, Hart also said, "Would I tell those jokes? No. But do I get why they're being told? Yes. I'm not looking at Pete crazy. I'm not looking at Tony crazy. I know what you're going to do. I know your style of comedy."

Terrence Floyd, George Floyd's brother, previously told "The Breakfast Club" host Loren LoRosa that Hart should have brought "Will Smith energy" to the roast by pushing back on Hinchcliffe's joke "right then and there."

But in his "Breakfast Club" interview, Hart defended himself by saying there was "nothing" he could have done in the moment. He also emphasized that he isn't the one who made the joke, arguing he shouldn't be blamed for it.

"It's a live production," Hart said. "I'm not compromising the live production for a reaction of what? What do you want me to do? I'm going to drag him off? You want me to fight afterwards? That's not what I agreed to do."

Netflix's "Roast of Kevin Hart" was hosted by Shane Gillis, who also drew criticism for some of his material, including jokes about lynching and about the death of comedian Sheryl Underwood's husband. Underwood was in the roast's lineup.

Chelsea Handler, another one of the participants in the roast, criticized the "gross" and "disgusting" jokes made at the event while appearing on the "Funny Knowing You" podcast. She criticized Gillis and Hinchcliffe, in particular.

"People are like, 'It's a roast. You go for it,'" she said. "I'm like, 'You can go for it without being gross.'"

Nikki Glaser, who has delivered a number of shocking jokes at comedy roasts over the years but did not participate in the Hart event, has also weighed in. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight at the American Music Awards, Glaser said she "loved watching" the roast but noted there was "some stuff that I didn't love," without naming names.

"I don't believe that jokes can't be made that are racist jokes, ironically racist jokes," she told ET. "The problem is not that it's racist. It's that ... if you really want to do a joke, you've got to find a way to make it make sense."

Peacock continues to expand its streaming offerings. In addition to its wealth of reality TV programming (including the *Real Housewives* franchise and *The Traitors*) and numerous NBC shows past and present, the streamer is also home to more than 1,000 movies.

As with any streaming service, the movies vary in quality, but Peacock's wide variety of great titles is remarkable, from cult horror classics like *Black Christmas* (1974) and *Night of the Living Dead* (1968) to recent Oscar-nominated dramas like *Conclave* (2024) and *Hamnet* (2025), alongside crowdpleasers like *Shrek* (2001) and *The Hunger Games* franchise.

Black Christmas (1974)

This slasher classic still holds up as one of the most chilling horror films of all time. A group of sorority sisters' good tidings of comfort and joy are interrupted by repeated profane phone calls, leading to one of them being murdered in the attic. This kicks off a horrifying series of events as they try in vain to get the police to determine the source of the call while they are picked off one by one. There have been two attempts at remaking *Black Christmas* in the 21st century, but neither has approached the level of paranoia and dread of the '70s original. —*Kevin Jacobsen*

Bridget Jones is back for one last hurrah, with this decidedly more poignant, Emmy-nominated final installment in the franchise. Renée Zellweger reprises her role as the titular plucky TV producer, who is now the mother of two children and mourning the unexpected death of her husband, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth). Finally ready to start dating again, she enters into a romance with a younger man (Leo Woodall) while also finding herself drawn to one of her son's teachers (Chiwetel Ejiofor). *Mad About the Boy* is much more mature compared to its predecessors, though it retains much of the series' cheeky humor, and Zellweger's performance remains a highlight. —*K.J.*

This Oscar-winning papal drama is far more thrilling and less stuffy than it may seem at first glance. After the death of the Pope, the Dean of the College of Cardinals (Ralph Fiennes) leads a conclave to select his successor, and what follows is a juicy battle for power, with shocking revelations that compete with the best of reality TV. EW's critic praises *Conclave* for being "packed with unexpected twists and its final reveal is one viewers will never see coming, an increasingly rare occurrence in modern movie-making and the mark of an impeccably crafted thriller." —*K.J.***

Who is the woman who spent her life with William Shakespeare? How did she handle the grief of losing their son, Hamnet? And how did this unspeakable loss help inspire one of the greatest plays ever written? Maggie O'Farrell speculated on each of these questions in her gorgeous 2020 novel, *Hamnet*, and Chloé Zhao's adaptation retains its quiet power, telling the story of Agnes (Jessie Buckley) as she grapples with love, life, and death. Buckley brings a deep well of emotion to her performance, leading up to a stunning moment of transcendence in the film's conclusion that has left audiences breathless. —*K.J.***

Jackie Brown (1997)

Quentin Tarantino paid tribute to the Blaxploitation films he grew up watching in the ‘70s with this underrated gem in his filmography. Fittingly, he cast one of the most beloved stars of the era, Pam Grier, to play the title role of Jackie Brown, a flight attendant who also smuggles money from Mexico to America for arms dealer Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson). After Jackie is caught and arrested, she suspects that Ordell will try to eliminate her, leading her to devise an elaborate plan with her bail bondsman (Robert Forster) to not only evade capture but also abscond with Ordell’s money.

Following the explosive success of *Pulp Fiction*, audiences in 1997 may have been thrown off by the more deliberate pace of *Jackie Brown*, but the sincere emotional core and lived-in performances by Grier and Forster help it only get better with age. —*K.J.*

This campy sci-fi spooker doesn't take itself too seriously, even if the titular doll is a serious threat to those who cross her owner. After robotics expert Gemma (Allison Williams) develops an artificial intelligence-powered doll named M3GAN for her grieving niece, Cady (Violet McGraw), the dangerously smart humanoid starts to exhibit possessive qualities. And God forbid anyone who poses even a minor threat to Cady. EW's critic calls *M3GAN* "a scampering Blumhouse caper that turns out to be blithely self-aware, negligibly jump-scary, and mostly very fun," and audiences seemed to agree — the film grossed nearly $100 million at the U.S. box office. —*K.J.*

*Memento* was Christopher Nolan's first mainstream foray into noodling with notions of time. Guy Pearce plays Leonard Shelby, a man who suffers from amnesia following the murder of his wife. Seeking justice, Leonard tries to make sense of his life while his failing short-term memory prompts him to tattoo important information on his body and take photographs with a Polaroid camera.**** The film cleverly uses both chronological and nonlinear editing interchangeably, putting the viewer in the protagonist's mind as we try to put together an elaborate puzzle. "*Memento* has a spooky repetitive urgency that takes on the clarity of a dream," writes EW's critic. "It’s like an Oliver Sacks case study played as malevolent film noir." —*K.J.*

With a budget just over $100,000, George Romero's indie horror masterpiece transformed the zombie genre, reshaping these once-subjugated creatures into autonomous, flesh-craving fiends while forever etching them into pop culture (and paving the way for future undead favorites like *The Walking Dead*). Revolving around a group of unlikely survivors holed up in an abandoned farmhouse, this film unravels as they fend off an onslaught of ravenous ghouls storming the area. *Night of the Living Dead* didn't just make cinematic history; it gnawed its way into the collective consciousness, birthing a thriving franchise with five sequels from 1978 to 2009, which all carry Romero's iconic directorial touch. *—James Mercadante*

*Point Break* is an early-'90s film through and through, a cops and robbers crime drama with some of the hottest actors of the era that's also a lot about surfing. Keanu Reeves stars as the brilliantly named Johnny Utah, a detective tasked with going undercover to bust a group of surf-loving bank robbers. But, as Johnny immerses himself in that particular subculture, he finds himself curiously drawn to it, particularly because of the group's charismatic leader, Bodhi (Patrick Swayze).**** Critics were mixed at the time (EW's own gave it a C+), but, as time has passed, we've come to appreciate its earnest sensibilities and director Kathryn Bigelow's thoughtful examination of male friendships, while still delivering as traditional popcorn entertainment. —*K.J.*

Once upon a time, in a swamp far, far away, Mike Myers graced us by voicing DreamWorks' misanthropic ogre. - Mackenzie Shirilla's alleged ex-girlfriend, Shyann Topping, speaks out about her relationship with *The Crash *subject and shares why they split.

- Topping's relationship with Shirilla "fizzled" after she did some research into the details of the fatal crash that killed Shirilla's boyfriend and their friend, she told PEOPLE.

- "It was crazy because after I found out [the details] of her case, and we stopped talking to each other and it fizzled out, people started texting me and saying crazy stuff to me," Topping alleges.

Another fellow inmate of Mackenzie Shirilla is speaking out about her relationship with the subject of the Netflix documentary *The Crash*, but this one claims she was much closer to Shirilla.

*The Crash* focused on the July 2022 car crash that killed Shirilla's boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and their friend, Davion Flanagan, and the journey to the August 2023 conviction that led to Shirilla currently serving two concurrent life prison sentences with the possibility of parole after 15 years.

Former inmate Shyann Topping claimed to PEOPLE in an interview published Tuesday that she and the Shirilla began dating shortly after the latter began serving her sentence at the Ohio Reformatory for Women, sharing that the pair first met on the outdoor track at the facility.

"When it started off we were good," Topping said to the outlet. We were just walking the track, she was smiling, because in prison —two weeks in prison feels like two months. All you're doing is seeing the same people every single day, 24 hours a day."

Topping claimed that it was around by the "second or third day" of their relationship that Shirilla's attitude took a turn. Topping said that Shirilla would tell her: "Why aren't you touching me? I want you to be all over me. I want you to be out here for everyone in the yard to see me."

Shyann Topping

Shyann Topping.

Despite any misgivings, Topping said she continued her relationship with Shirilla after she was released from prison, but that things hit a road bump when Topping dug into the details of the incident resulting in Russo and Flanagan's deaths.

"When I was in [prison], I honestly believed maybe she's not guilty because of the limited information I had," Topping told the outlet, saying that she didn't know about the crash prior to meeting Mackenzie because she was already behind bars. "When I first got out [of prison] I was like, 'Oh, they don't know what this girl's been through.'"

While Topping said she left prison ready to "fight for [Mackenzie's] release" and "be an advocate" for her case, she claimed that fell through once she learned more about the crash.

"And then I started going through everything and seeing the evidence and I started thinking about her and I realized, 'Oh my God, maybe she's not a good person,'" she added.

Topping tried to talk to Shirilla about her questions, but she provided unsatisfactory answers, the former inmate said. Then, in August 2025, Topping decided to post a series of videos to her TikTok account detailing their relationship and, according to her, effectively ended their relationship.

Shortly after that first video went live on Aug. 12, she began to receive anonymous threats that made her fear for her safety, Topping told PEOPLE.

"It was crazy because after I found out [the details] of her case and we stopped talking to each other and it fizzled out, people started texting me and saying crazy stuff to me," Topping said, alleging that some of the texts were just her mother's name or her home address.

Topping told the outlet that she believes the texts came from inmates who were locked up with Mackenzie at the time. Regardless of where they came from, Topping said that the texts were enough to stop her from posting after her initial three posts. She didn't post to TikTok again until May 17, following the release of *The Crash*. The latest videos are continuations of Topping's telling of their relationship.

Since *The Crash*'s debut on May 15, both true crime obsessives and curious onlookers have dissected the doc, which revisits the devastating case and its aftermath. *The Crash* also includes the first on-camera interview with Shirilla, who will be eligible for parole in 2037.

"It's really hard every day in here," Shirilla says in *The Crash*. "I try to wake up and be the best person I can be every day, stay out of trouble. There's not a moment that doesn't pass where I don't think about [Russo and Flanagan]."

*The Crash* is available to stream on Netflix.

- CBS has renewed *Marshals* for a second season.

- Season 1 ends on a cliffhanger that puts several major characters in danger.

- Season 2 will premiere in the fall of 2026.

Taylor Sheridan’s *Yellowstone* universe is the gift that keeps on giving.

Less than two weeks after its March premiere, *Marshals* received the green light for a second season. That likely had something to do with the success of its premiere: Within its first week, the show generated a whopping 20.6 million multiplatform viewers. By mid-April, *Marshals* had emerged as one of the most-watched series across all of broadcast and streaming.

*Marshals* follows Luke Grimes’ Kayce Dutton, who, following the loss of his wife, reconnects with an old colleague from his days as a Navy SEAL and joins the U.S. Marshals.

Season 1 wrapped on May 24, shining a light on the attacks on Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and raising several questions about the future of the Broken Rock reservation.

Read on for everything we know so far about season 2 of *Marshals.*

Will there be a second season of Marshals?

Yes, CBS announced on March 12 that *Marshals* was renewed for a second season.

The show’s premiere became the most-watched CBS original series debut without a football lead-in since *Young Sheldon* premiered in 2017. It also became CBS’ most-streamed episode ever on Paramount+.

“The overwhelming viewer response speaks to the strength of the *Yellowstone* world, the bold character-driven storytelling from the creative team and the dynamic cast performances led by Luke Grimes," said CBS boss Amy Reisenbach in a statement.

How does Marshals season 1 end?

Kayce spent the latter part of season 1 considering a sale of East Camp to a wealthy rancher, Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey), prompted by the death of both his wife and old friend Garrett (Riley Green) on the land. He eventually rejects that offer, deciding that he can’t part with that piece of himself and his history.

He later informs his colleagues that he wants to turn the camp into an equine therapy center for veterans, inspired by Garrett’s passion for horses.

Meanwhile, Kayce’s fellow marshal, Andrea Cruz (Ash Santos), accepts a job offer to relocate to Washington D.C. However, she seems hesitant to do so, having formed a bit of an attachment to the wide open spaces of Montana. By the end of the episode, it seems clear that she’s looking for a reason to stay.

Much of the finale, however, centers around the assassination attempts on Thomas Rainwater, the chairman of the Confederated Tribes of Broken Rock. Rainwater wants to shut down a controversial mine on the Broken Rock reservation, but he's again attacked by masked assassins on his way to speak with a senator about the mine. Kayce hides him out at East Camp, but a hit squad nevertheless finds them. An all-out battle ensues, with Kayce and Rainwater flanked by the marshals.

After taking out the killers, Kayce and his team deduce that they were hired by someone with the money to afford them, leading them to suspect a council member named Nathan Irons (Gary Nohealii), who was frequently at odds with Rainwater. However, the marshals end up finding Irons dead by what looks like a suicide — until an autopsy reveals otherwise, and Rainwater suspects someone else is pulling the strings.

Later, after Kayce allows his son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), to go bass fishing with Weaver in Texas, we learn that Weaver was involved in the attacks on Rainwater. Furthermore, his men also open fire on Kayce's fellow marshals Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) and Belle (Arielle Kebbel). The finale ends with the fates of Tate, Cal, and Belle remaining unknown.

What will Marshals season 2 be about?

Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater on 'Marshals'

Gil Birmingham as Thomas Rainwater on 'Marshals'.

No official synopsis has been released for season 2 as of this writing, but we can make some educated guesses about what the next season will look like.

For one, there are still plenty of unanswered questions around the attempts on Rainwater’s life — and their connection to Weaver. What are his intentions? And what does he have planned for Tate in Texas? And then there's Weaver's daughter, Dolly (Ellyn Jameson), who's been cozying up to Kayce. How aware is she of what her dad is doing?

Season 1 ends with Rainwater throwing a wrench in the development of the mine on Broken Rock, but the land's troubles run deeper, from the proliferation of fentanyl to the presence of a cartel. The marshals will no doubt continue working with Rainwater to try and bring peace to the reservation.

Who's in the cast of Marshals season 2?

Ash Santos as Andrea, Arielle Kebbel as Belle, Logan Marshall-Green as Pete Calvin, and Tatanka Means as Miles on 'Marshals'

CBS has yet to make an official cast announcement, but you can certainly expect to see Grimes return alongside the other marshals.

Logan Marshall-Green confirmed his involvement in season 2 in an interview with TVInsider, revealing that he's already read the first script. “We pick up right where we left off, I mean literally and figuratively,” he said. “No rest for the wicked.”

The actor also teased more developments in his relationships to Belle and his daughter, Maddie (Morgan Lindholm), as well as his struggles with cancer. “There’s always something and the next phase is going to be this cancer,” he said. "I don’t want a pussyfoot around it. I want the stakes to be as high as possible and that’s something I always talk about on set every day, every sentence, every scene. Stakes are high and keep them high. So even though it was great to hear my daughter say the word 'dad,' there’s always something coming down the road with life."

Plus, Santos confirmed in an interview with *PEOPLE* that she’ll be making a return in season 2 as well.

"[In] season 2, I think we'll start to see a side of Andrea that's almost opposite to how we met her in season 1," she teased. "That's what's been really interesting to me."

When does Marshals season 2 come out?

While *Marshals* season 2 doesn't have an exact premiere date as of yet, CBS confirmed it will arrive this fall. It will continue to air Sundays at 8 p.m. ET.

Where can I watch Marshals?

*Marshals *is currently available to stream on Paramount+.

Mel Gibson recently wrapped filming on The Resurrection of the Christ.

The Passion of the Christ sequel is expected to unfold in two parts.

Gibson shared a first look at actor Jaako Ohtonen as Jesus Christ.

Mel Gibson's sequel to 2004's The Passion of the Christhas finally risen.

The polarizing actor-turned-director recently completed filming on his long-awaited The Resurrection of the Christ, which is expected to be split into two parts.

The first installment in Gibson's Biblical epic was a massive hit, generating over $611 million worldwide on a reported $30 million budget, financed by Gibson himself. Released in February 2004, The Passion of the Christ is an unflinching depiction of the final 12 hours of the life of Jesus Christ, played by Jim Caviezel. The film famously includes Jesus' flagellation and crucifixion, which are depicted in gruesome detail, while his resurrection is glimpsed briefly at the end of the film.

Gibson has been working on an official follow-up to The Passion of the Christ since at least 2016, when his Braveheart cowriter Randall Wallace confirmed he was collaborating with Gibson on a screenplay. There have been several eyebrow-raising updates in the decade since, with Gibson often describing the sequel as "an acid trip" that follows the titular savior into Hell.

Below, we've assembled everything we know so far about The Resurrection of the Christ.

What is The Resurrection of the Christ about?

There's been some confusion as to how Gibson can have enough material to make not just one, but two sequels to The Passion of the Christ. But according to the Bible, Jesus remained on Earth for 40 days after his resurrection, and Gibson says there is an additional story to be told about the three days between his crucifixion and return.

"In order to tell the story properly you have to start with the fall of the angels. You’re in another realm. You need to go Hell. You need to go to Sheol," Gibson explained to Joe Rogan in 2025, using the Hebrew word for the underworld. Gibson also confirmed that Resurrection will include a depiction of Satan, portrayed in The Passion of the Christ by Rosalinda Celentano.

Multiple Christian traditions describe the three days after the crucifixion as "The Harrowing of Hell," during which Jesus descended into the underworld and, according to some doctrines, saved the souls that had been held there since the beginning of time. It's pretty ambitious to attempt to depict these more fantastical narrative elements, even in the faith-based genre landscape, which typically sticks to playing the hits.

In an official statement, Gibson said of the two-part sequel, "This film represents a major part of my life’s work, and it has demanded everything of me as a filmmaker and as an artist. This is far more than a film to me. It’s a mission I’ve carried for over twenty years to tell what I believe is the most important story in human history."

Who's playing Jesus in The Resurrection of the Christ?

Caviezel was set to reprise his role as Jesus in The Resurrection of the Christ as recently as April 2025, when he said on a podcast that production would employ de-aging technology similar to what Martin Scorsese used in The Irishman (2019) to make it appear as though Jesus had only aged three days instead of 10 years. “I’m not going to play Jesus. I need Him to play me," he said. "That’s the only way this thing is going to work.”

Just six months later, in October 2025, it was revealed that Caviezel and many of his original co-stars had been replaced in the sequel because the de-aging process would be too costly.

Replacing Caviezel is Jaakko Ohtonen, a Finnish actor best known for his role in the British Netflix seriesThe Last Kingdom. Lionsgate revealed the first official photo of Ohtonen as Jesus in The Resurrection of the Christ on May 21. "I’m deeply grateful to my incredibly talented cast and crew for pouring their hearts into this production," Gibson said in his statement. "Together, we created something powerful."

Who else is in The Resurrection of the Christ?

In addition to Ohtonen, The Resurrection of the Christ features an all-new cast that includes Mariela Garriga as Mary Magdalene, replacing previous star Monica Bellucci. Garriga previously appeared in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning (2023).

Polish-Italian actress Kasia Smutniak is portraying Mary, Jesus' mother, replacing Maia Morgenstern. John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)actor Riccardo Scamarcio is playing Pontius Pilate, replacing Hristo Shopov. Peter is played by Italian actor Pier Luigi Pasino, replacing Francesco De Vito. Gabriele Rollo is playing John, replacing Christo Jivkov, who passed away in 2023.

Additional cast members include Lorenzo James Henrie (Fear the Walking Dead), Lorenzo Richelmy (Netflix's Marco Polo), Vincenzo Nemolato (La chimera), and Rupert Everett (My Best Friend's Wedding). Per Variety, Everett is playing an "unspecified small but important role" in the sequels.

Is there a Resurrection of the Christ trailer?

As of this writing, a trailer has yet to be released for The Resurrection of the Christ. We'll update this piece when there is one.

Along with the first official image, Lionsgate revealed some disappointing news for fans eager to see Gibson's sequels: The Resurrection of the Christ will release a little later than planned.

Both parts were initially set to release 40 days apart, in March and May 2027. Now, Part One will hit theaters on May 6, 2027, followed by Part Two on May 25, 2028.

The Walt Disney World resort is debuting seven new attractions today, May 26

Disney's Hollywood Studios is inviting guests to experience the Muppets on Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, Walt Disney Studios Courtyard and Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!

Other additions include a Bluey experience at Animal Kingdom and Soarin' Across America at EPCOT

The magic is reaching new heights today at Walt Disney World as the resort is debuting seven major attractions sure to keep guests entertained all summer long.

Disney World is bringing something new to all four theme parks today, May 26, including the reimagining of some previously beloved attractions as well as some completely new offerings.

The biggest changes are coming to Disney's Hollywood Studios where Rock ‘n' Roller Coaster is making a return following a more than two-month closure for retheming. The ride, which previously starred Aerosmith, had its final day of operation on March 1. But now, the Muppets are taking over G-Force studios as they rush to get Animal and the Electric Mayhem band to their biggest Hollywood concert ever.

On the ride, guests will be jamming out to one of five selections from The Electric Mayhem's extensive catalog including “Song 2,” “Born to Be Wild” featuring Camilla the Chicken, “Love Rollercoaster” with Jennifer Hudson and Questlove, “Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop)” accompanied by Def Leppard and “Walking on Sunshine” with Kelly Clarkson.

The queue also features an adorable encounter with the world's first audio-animatronic Scooter, who attempts to convince the band to stop grooving and leave to make their concert on time.

Elsewhere in the park, Disney is also reopening Walt Disney Studios Courtyard, previously Animation Courtyard. The reimagined space takes inspiration from the real Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, Calif. Throughout the area, guests can find landscaping, studio-inspired architecture and Easter eggs from the company's beloved animated feature films, including Chinese Theater-style hand and footprints in the cement and statues of animated animals.

Guests will also find the larger-than-life Sorcerer Mickey's hat that previously graced the park. On top of the new Magic of Disney Animation attraction, the hat stands tall on top of another future attraction set to debut later this summer. Inside, guests can meet six of their favorite characters and try the new Animation Academy experience with Olaf Draws!

Joel McHale wanted to be a part of *Community *from the moment he read the pilot script way back in 2009.

Written by Dan Harmon, the series premiere introduced the world to Jeff Winger (McHale), an ex-lawyer who was forced to enroll at Greendale Community College after his law firm found out he faked his college degree. Cynical and manipulative, Winger hoped to breeze threw the community college without developing any attachments; however, he ends up creating a study group comprised of (mostly) lovable misfits in order to sleep with his classmate Britta (Gillian Jacobs). Suit jacket and sweatpants notwithstanding, McHale related to the character when he read the pilot.

"I think I liked the character so much because he was someone who participates with their arm extended," he tells EW in the latest installment EW's *BINGE* of *Community*. "They're like, 'Yeah, yeah, I'll do it, but just let's just calm down.' [I liked] that he was always very reticent to do anything but was game to do it. And that is kind of how I am. I'm always skeptical to a fault and sarcastic and a cynic to a fault. And it was just such a well-written script and I would've sawed off a pinkie to do it. I didn't do that, but I would have."

He continues: "You'd read some scripts and you go, 'Well, this looks like it's going to be done in a year.' Like, 'How can they maintain this level of whatever they're doing?' And this one was a sandbox that you could like [say], 'Oh, Dan can do anything he wants here and he did.' The only sort of looming goal was graduation and Pierce [Chevy Chase] proved that you never had to leave."

*Community *definitely rewarded McHale's belief that the possibilities were endless in that first season, which grew bolder with almost each episode. By the end of season 1, the NBC sitcom had done a *Goodfellas* homage ("Contemporary American Poultry") and a paintball episode ("Modern Warfare") that was a send-up of action movies and directed by Justin Lin.

"To be honest here, I didn't feel a switch. It all seemed to make sense to me," says McHale. "I just never went, 'Oh well, this show's getting *crazy*.' I never did anything like that."

That being said, McHale does remember how excited he was to receive each script and go to work every day. "I was getting to do what I always wanted to do. I always wanted to be on a good television show and act. And so I was skipping to work every day," he says. "I couldn't believe how cool the show was and how I got to be on it and how blessed I was. So there wasn't anything where like, 'Oh man, how am I going to do this one? This is the greatest challenge.' It was more just like, 'I can't believe I get to do this and try this and hopefully I'll be good at it.'"

For more from McHale on season 1, including his thoughts on the surprising finale, watch the latest installment of EW's* BINGE *of* Community* above. And check back on Saturday for season 2's episode with Yvette Nicole Brown and Ken Jeong.
