Jenna Maurice; Tor Books

*V. E. Schwab** closes out **her *Villains* saga** with *Victorious*, the third and final entry of the trilogy hitting shelves this Oct. 6. *

*Victor Vale, Sydney Clarke, and Mitch Turner are all a bit wayward after the events of *Vengeful* (2018), which saw the deaths of Eli Ever, EON head Mark Stell, and rampaging EO Marcella Riggins. In the first excerpt from the new novel, which ** can exclusively reveal, Victor is still off on his own, struggling with the realities of his condition. *

*Then someone he was not expecting to see again walks back into his life.*

*"A lot of [*Victorious*] opens in the first chapters on the concept of aftermath, specifically what happens when you no longer have a purpose," Schwab told EW in **an exclusive interview**. "Everyone is a little bit adrift. They're still in a purgatory. They're still hiding. They're not living normally."*

*Read the full excerpt below.*

Victor sipped a whisky—neat—and counted.

He counted the number of states he'd crossed—six—and the number of finished drinks in front of him—two—and the number of empty seats to his left—four.

He counted the number of hours since his last dose—seven—and the number until his next one—five.

He lifted the glass to his mouth and counted the number of other bodies in the room—eight.

Once upon a time, he would've felt them, too, been able to trace the elaborate pattern of their nerves, the current that ran beneath their skin. Would've been able to pull on that current until they buckled, screamed.

Now, the only thing he felt was the thin glass tumbler in his hand.

And the worst part was, he'd done it to himself.

Not that he'd had many options.

Ever since Sydney had brought Victor back from the dead, his power had been glitching, his body reenacting the same electrical surge that had stopped his heart back at Lockland, fifteen years before. After each episode, it had taken longer for his heart to restart, until it became clear the next death would genuinely kill him.

A fortuitous discovery, then, that he'd found a drug capable of suppressing that death.

Unfortunately, it did so by suppressing his powers.

Rendering him *ordinary*.

Victor drew a cartridge from his coat pocket and turned it in the bar's low light, studying the vivid blue contents as he counted the number of vials currently in his possession—four and a half—and the number he'd started with—six—and the number of days—sixty-three—until he ran out of Haverty's compound. Which wouldn't be such a problem except the good doctor was dead.

He counted the number of weeks—three—that had passed since the showdown at the Merit gala. The night Victor had killed EON's director, Stell.

The night Eli had killed Marcella. The night Sydney had killed Eli.

Victor's hand tightened imperceptibly on the glass.

He had waited fifteen years to kill his best friend.

And he was dead.

But Syd had been the one to pull the trigger.

Victor told himself that's what bothered him, the fact she'd deprived him of his closure, stolen his kill. But that was a lie. What bothered Victor most was that, for the first time in his life, he didn't know what to do next.

And he hated it.

More than the absence of his powers.

More than dying at Eli's hands.

More than the solitary cell in which he'd spent the first five years, after his arrest. Because then, at least, he'd been fueled by the promise of revenge.

Eli was dead, and Victor wasn't dead.

He was in purgatory. Not in the biblical sense—he didn't believe in that—but technically trapped. Tethered to a drug that kept him alive, but powerless.

He'd hoped, when he'd first stolen the serum, that it was simply a matter of finding the right dose. That the threshold, once determined, would enable Victor to keep the death at bay without giving up his powers. But there seemed to be no nuance. No degrees.

The compound was all or nothing.

The only reprieve, a narrow window of time after the dose wore off and before the dying began. A brief gap during which his abilities came rushing back, heady, electric. But it was a window measured in hours, not days, and Victor had the grim suspicion that it, like the time between his episodes, was shrinking. That it would eventually close.

Until he found an alternative remedy, he was bound to the clock. Counting every hour, every day until—

Somewhere beyond the bar, a dog barked.

Victor looked up, scanning the windows, and saw a large black beast standing on the curb outside.

It wasn't. Couldn't be.

And yet, the dog—Sydney's shadow, his stray—stared back at Victor, tail wagging in recognition.

He stood too fast, nearly upending what was left of his scotch, but by the time he righted the glass, the dog was gone. The curb, empty.

Victor frowned, running a hand through his hair.

He'd never slept well, his senses too keen, every body around him humming like a plucked string, but these days he was having the opposite problem. Without his power, he felt exposed. Vulnerable. Spent most nights hovering at the edge of consciousness, unwilling or unable to sink fully into sleep.

The lack of rest was clearly catching up with him.

He went to the restroom, was bent over the sink, splashing water on his face when he heard the sound of another man entering, followed by the bolt being thrown. He looked up, expecting trouble.

Victorious by VE Schwab

- V.E. Schwab gives ** the scoop on *Victorious*, the finale to her *Villains* trilogy.

- Schwab's "loadstar" for Book 3 is Hannibal, the TV series: "I think readers will be stifled but also delighted by some of that in *Victorious*."

- When it comes to the braided timeline, she says, "This one is counting down to the end."

Thirteen years ago, before she became a *New York Times* best-selling author in the fantasy space, V. E. Schwab was on the verge of leaving publishing altogether. She wrote three young-adult books but wasn't encouraged by the response from the gatekeepers in the industry. It was a constant feeling of falling short, never being good enough.

Out of this period came *Vicious* (2013), her first adult novel that introduced a world of EOs, individuals with extraordinary abilities — her unique spin on the superhero genre. "I felt extremely othered," Schwab tells **. "I hadn't come out yet, I just felt like a mimic in society, and I had these really toxic friendships, like romance without the sex, where it was just this concept of obsession."

That feeling is reflected in the characters of that novel. Victor Vale and Eli Cardale, two ambitious fast friends at Lockland University, make a breakthrough discovery: Those who endure near-death experiences could, under the right conditions, develop powers, each uniquely catered to the individual's specific circumstances.

For Eli, who takes the new name of Eli Ever, he attains the power of regeneration but sets out on a religious mission from God to wipe out all EOs from the world. Victor, meanwhile, acquires mastery over pain — the power to give it and take it away on command. As the years progressed and Schwab's notoriety only grew with the publication of separate books, like the wildly popular *Darker Shades of Magic* series, this cat-and-mouse game between Victor and Eli spiraled into a sequel, *Vengeful* (2018).

And now, in 2026, Schwab returns to the world that truly launched her career in literary fantasy. *Victorious*, out Oct. 6, marks the conclusion to what is now known as her *Villains* trilogy. (Read the exclusive first excerpt on EW.)

"I have this control over my career, over so much that I didn't have when I wrote *Vicious*. I came from a place of spite on that one," the author reflects. "Now looking back, writing a book that is so much about the arc of these characters, but also the arc of me as a creative and as someone who has scaled the steps that are on the cover of *Victorious*, I just feel like I'm in a completely different place."

For the writer who says she likes to "play God" — meaning, she prefers to know everything about her characters before writing a story — it should come as no surprise that she always saw *Villains* as a trilogy right from the start of *Vicious*. She'd just been burned before: Her previous YA trilogy, *The Archived*, was discontinued two books in, and on a cliffhanger! Schwab feared putting readers in a similar position again. So she kept her plans to herself…until now.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

"I've always thought of it as three installments. I think when we say 'trilogy,' it gives a really specific structural expectation. I wanted each book to stand in its own light and to do its own thing," the scribe says. "I had a vision for how it would end, I had a vision for who would be left standing and what the situation would be. It was just a matter of, 'How do I want to get from where I ended *Vengeful* to that moment?'"

In terms of that ending, Eli is finally dead, killed by Victor's surrogate daughter Sydney (with the power of resurrection) after he was injected with a serum that suppresses an EO's abilities. Victor left his found family, including his hacker right-hand man Mitch, behind to deal with his lingering condition; ever since Sydney brought him back from the dead in Book 1, his powers have been glitching and causing him tremendous pain. His only solace is the same serum that led to Eli's downfall, but supply is dwindling.

Vengeful by VE Schwab

'Vengeful' cover art.

They're all left wayward, no longer with a core mission (hunting Eli) driving their every move. The same goes for June, the shape-shifting human voodoo doll and hitwoman who became a swift fan favorite in Book 2.

"A lot of [*Victorious*] opens in the first chapters on the concept of aftermath, specifically what happens when you no longer have a purpose," Schwab explains. "Everyone is a little bit adrift. They're still in a purgatory. They're still hiding. They're not living normally."

From here, plot details are few and far between. That's by design. There's a mysterious new leader of EON (ExtraOrdinary Observation and Neutralization), according to a cryptic summary. The secret government organization, tasked with monitoring and containing the EO threat, has "a terrifying agenda" that brings out core heroes, villains, and allies into the lion's lair for the ultimate confrontation.

Like the previous two installments, *Victorious* is told through a braided timeline with a ticking clock looming overhead. The perspective varies between characters and periods over the two years since the events of *Vengeful*. As Schwab warns, "This one is counting down to the end."

The author typically follows one loadstar with each book. For *Vicious*, it was the anime *Cowboy Bebop*. For *Vengeful*, it was *Killing Eve*, starring Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer. Now for *Victorious*, it's *Hannibal*, the TV series.

Hannibal Season 2, Episode 13

Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen on 'Hannibal' season 2. NBC

Arguably, there's always been an undercurrent of sexual tension between Victor and Eli in their fight to kill each other. The same goes for the two leads of NBC's Mads Mikkelsen- and Hugh Dancy-fronted serial killer drama, which took things from subtext to text by the final season.

"I think readers will be stifled but also delighted by some of that in *Victorious*," Schwab says. "Similarly to *Hannibal*'s third season, they knew they were being canceled and they were just like, 'We're gonna do what we want.' I kind of feel like this was a return to me being like, 'This is what I want.' Each book is gonna fulfill a different desire or a different urge."

Does this mean Eli is definitely coming back from the dead? Schwab isn't going to spoil her own work, not before pre-orders are fulfilled, but she will say, "When has anyone in this series ever stayed dead?"

There are plenty more pressing questions to be answered. Who is the mysterious figure gracing the *Victorious* cover along with Victor, Sydney, and resurrected dog Dol? "It's really gonna be up to the reader to argue for who that figure is," Schwab teases.

Victorious by VE Schwab

'Victorious' cover.

No spoilers, but there will be a new character introduced with a power set Schwab likens to Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff on Marvel series *WandaVision*. She describes it as "an imposition of a new reality surrounding them at all times." It's her favorite new power but the hardest to write.

"Having to show from a third-person narration that character's concept of reality stumbles and resets would've been so easy on television," she quips.

Reality appears to be the key to the entire story she's telling. The book opens with quote on that subject from Albert Einstein: "Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one."

"If you look at these three books, I'm so fascinated by the way any author who writes a lot of books, their books really do become milestone markers," Schwab continues. "I can measure my age by my books."

It's why she feels there's an autobiographical element to Villains. Victor and Eli are named after her own name, Victoria Elizabeth Schwab. And now *Victorious* sounds an awful lot like her first name. "Book 3," she says, "is a book about psychology. It's about control, it's about the illusion of control, and it's about our own perception of our own reality."

Former *Euphoria* cast member Barbie Ferreira has addressed the popular show moving on without her ahead of season 3.

Following her exit from HBO's Zendaya-starring drama series after season 2, the actress responded to a recent interview question about how much she keeps up with her ex-colleagues.

"Are you the same with *Euphoria*, where you see the trailers and you go, 'Oh, that's good that they're having fun on set, but I will catch up with them outside of the set anyway,' now that you've left the show?" *The Morning Mashup* radio show host Ben Harlum asked Ferreira in a new interview.

"Yeah, totally. People always ask me questions about season 3. I'm like, 'I don't know.' I don't even think the girls know," the star, who played Kat on seasons 1 and 2, replied.

Ferreira said she asks her former castmates questions about new episodes, including if social media star Trisha Paytas is joining season 3 alongside returning actors Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie, Maude Apatow, Jacob Elordi, Colman Domingo, and the late Eric Dane, among others.

"I was like, 'Is Trisha Paytas in *Euphoria*?' And they're like, 'I don't know.' And I'm like, 'You're in it. How did you not know?'" Ferreira continued. "So, I haven't seen anything until the trailers this week. They look amazing. I'm excited to see what the girls are gonna do."**

Ferreira previously addressed her exit from the show in an interview on Dax Shepard's *Armchair Expert* podcast, in which she disputed a rumor that she walked off set following a dispute with creator Sam Levinson.

"When people ask me about season 2, they come at me like I was some sort of victim to season 2, and I'm always like, 'No, it's okay, promise. It's good,'" Ferreira said at the time. "I kind of got sucked into this drama that I never asked to be in and that I've never talked about. I'm of the mindset that if it doesn't exist, I'm not going to address it because then I'm adding fuel to it."

Another longtime *Euphoria* artist, recording artist Labrinth, also recently posted about not returning for season 3.

The British artist slammed his record label, Columbia, and *Euphoria* in a since-deleted social media post earlier in March, writing, "IM DONE WITH THIS INDUSTRY. F--- COLUMBIA," the 37-year-old composer of *Euphoria*'s signature score wrote.

The Grammy nominee continued, "DOUBLE F--- *EUPHORIA*. IM OUT. THANK YOU AND GOOD NIGHT X." (HBO representatives did not respond to **'s request for comment at the time.)

*Euphoria* season 3 premieres April 12 on HBO. Watch Ferreira speak about her exit in the video above.

Jack Black is involved in a fiery, potentially one-sided feud with Ryan Gosling — and it's all the Academy's fault.

The *Super Mario Galaxy Movie** *star revealed that he considers the* **Project Hail Mary* actor to be his "archenemy" after Gosling's *Barbie *anthem "I'm Just Ken" received an Original Song nomination at the 2024 Oscars and Black's Bowser* *ballad "Peaches" did not.

"Bowser did not get any attention or love from the Academy," Black explained on Thursday's episode of *The Tonight Show*. "And I was like, 'Dude, "Peaches" is a banger.' Everyone's singing [it]. Your kids are singing [it]. For a second, I was like, 'I think we might get a nominash.' And, sure enough, we did not. It was a goose egg."

The Tenacious D rocker even admitted that he "campaigned for it for a little bit" but, like Bowser marrying Peach, it just wasn't meant to be.

"And then not only did I not get him a nominash, but my archenemy, 'The Goz,' Ryan Gosling, *did* get a nominash!" Black exclaimed. "I was like, 'Son of a biscuit. This Gosling, always snacking on my potatoes.'"

To be clear, "Peaches" was not among the 15 tracks that were originally shortlisted for the category in December 2023, meaning that it wasn't going to receive a nominash even without the involvement of Gosling's Kenergy-fuelled anthem. Furthermore, it's the songwriters who actually receive the nomination, not the performers, which means Black's fury should instead be directed at Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, not Gosling.**** However, that didn't stop Black from holding a grudge against his fellow actor. "Look, I love 'I'm Just Ken.' Love *Barbie* movie," he prefaced, "but I can't pretend like there wasn't a little professional jealousy."

***Get your daily dose of entertainment news, celebrity updates, and what to watch with our ******EW Dispatch newsletter******.***

In fact, Black was so envious that he wrote an entire song from Bowser's perspective that he performed on the late-night show. "Just imagine me in a full Bowser costume right now," he prefaced, before singing, "I can't believe / I wasn't nominated / Bowser shall have his revenge!'"

That jealousy must've only compounded when Gosling performed "I'm Just Ken" with Slash, Mark Ronson, Wolfgang Van Halen, and a bunch of his fellow Kens — including Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Scott Evans — at the Oscars.

A *Barbie* song did end up winning an Oscar that evening, but it wasn't "I'm Just Ken." Billie Eilish's poignant "What Was I Made For?" took home the prize instead.

Bodycam Footage Reveals Tiger Woods Called Donald Trump From the Scene of His Florida Rollover Crash Before His DUI Arrest

Summary -

Bodycam footage shows Tiger Woods telling a deputy he had just called President Trump from the crash scene seconds before his DUI arrest on March 27.

Woods was found with two hydrocodone pills in his pocket and showed signs of impairment, despite blowing zeros on a breathalyzer.

Woods, who is dating Trump's former daughter-in-law Vanessa Trump, has since pleaded not guilty and announced he is stepping away to seek treatment.

When your car flips in Florida, most people call 911 or their insurance company. Tiger Woods apparently had a different contact in mind.

Bodycam footage obtained by TMZ and released Thursday (April 2, 2026) shows that in the window between rolling his Land Rover SUV on Jupiter Island on March 27 and getting arrested for DUI, the golf legend stepped away from officers to make a phone call. When a deputy asked him to return, Woods wrapped up the conversation with a breezy "Thank you so much. All right. You got it. Bye. Thank you," and walked back calmly.

Then came the name-drop.

"I was just talking to the president," Woods told the deputy after hanging up the phone. Whether the name-drop was a habit or a Hail Mary, it didn't help — deputies arrested him shortly after.

It's worth noting the context here, because there is a lot of it. Woods is currently dating Vanessa Trump, the ex-wife of Donald Trump Jr., and Trump awarded Woods the Congressional Medal of Freedom in 2019. So yes, these two are genuinely close — this wasn't Woods cold-calling the White House, hoping to get through to the receptionist.

As for the crash itself, it was chaotic. Woods told authorities he was looking at his phone and changing the radio station when his speeding Land Rover clipped the back of a truck and rolled onto its side on a residential road on Jupiter Island. In classic understatement befitting a man who has survived worse, he told an officer: "I looked down at my phone and all of a sudden… BOOM!"

No one else was injured. Woods, however, was not doing great.

According to a Martin County Sheriff's arrest affidavit, the golfer had "bloodshot and glassy eyes," "extremely dilated pupils," and was "sweating profusely." Deputies also found something a little extra during their search: two white pills in his pocket. "That's a Norco," Woods said after an officer pulled them out, referring to a painkiller that contains acetaminophen and the opioid hydrocodone.

Woods blew "triple zeroes" on a breathalyzer — meaning zero alcohol — but refused a urine test, leading to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.

Martin County Deputy Sheriff Tatiana Levenar wasn't convinced by the zeros. "I do believe your normal faculties are impaired, and you're under an unknown substance, so at this time you're under arrest for DUI," she told Woods after conducting a field sobriety test.

At the sheriff's office, Woods maintained his innocence with what might be the most relatable DUI defense of 2026: "I'm not drunk. I'm on a prescription medication."

Trump, for his part, was characteristically verbose when asked about his old friend. "I feel so bad. He's got some difficulty — there was an accident, and that's all I know," Trump told reporters. "A very close friend of mine, he's an amazing person, an amazing man. But some difficulty. I don't want to talk about it."

He then talked about it some more. "He lives a life of pain. He has a lot of pain. He's an amazing guy. He's an amazing athlete. He does have pain," Trump said Tuesday (March 31, 2026). "He doesn't have an alcohol problem, but he does have pain."

This is not, as the kids say, Woods' first rodeo. He was arrested in May 2017 for DUI in Florida after cops found him asleep in a car that had been damaged, with traces of Vicodin, Dilaudid, Xanax, Ambien, and THC in his system. He resolved that case with a diversion program and avoided a conviction.

Woods, 50, has pleaded not guilty. He was expected to compete at The Masters this week, but will not be attending. Instead, he posted a statement saying he was stepping away indefinitely "to seek treatment and focus on my health," adding, "This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery."

Trump, ever the optimist, told reporters after news of the treatment decision broke that it was "a good thing" that he was seeking treatment.

The White House did not respond to requests for comment on the phone call. Presumably, the president had other things on his plate — but apparently not at the moment his phone rang on Jupiter Island.

When the Summer House Season 10 reunion films later this month, all eyes will be on Amanda Batula and West Wilson. Last week, viewers learned about their scandalous, secret relationship. Even still, Bravo passed on a quick return to filming, so the reunion will be the first time this cast comes back together. However, these two lovers have properly pissed off almost all parties involved. So, production has a lot to consider when moving forward.

Kyle Cooke and Amanda shared a rather rocky marriage. So it shocked no one when they announced their split last January. After, fans and cast members alike rallied around Amanda. But no one rallied harder than Amanda's best friend, who also happened to be West's ex.

Ciara Miller will absolutely rise from the ashes of this mess. Fans definitely have her back over Amanda's now. But when the reunion films, Ciara's emotions are likely to be all over the map, especially when she sees West and Amanda openly interacting as a couple on the soundstage. Thankfully, it sounds like the network is already considering all possible scenarios as they piece together the moving parts of this fast-approaching sit-down.

According to Page Six, Bravo is not making any rash production decisions at the moment. "Everything is still very, very fresh, and the network's priority right now is making sure the cast is OK," an insider revealed only yesterday. As for the fate of this series, "zero decisions" have been made yet. The same thing applies to its upcoming spinoff, In The City.

As of yet, no one on this cast has mentioned their desire to quit. Likewise, no one is on the chopping block just yet. That said, this source did mention that Andy Cohen will absolutely address this scandal during the reunion. So, buckle up, fans, this will likely be a very bumpy ride.

Summer House airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on Bravo. It streams on Peacock the following day.

Being a toddler's mom can be a busy job, and Lindsay Lohan's bag says it all. In Vogue Arabia's latest episode of "In The Bag," Lohan opens up her very first Hermès handbag and reveals a bag packed like a survival kit for life with a toddler.

In the video, the actor says, "It's not light, my bag," before disclosing everything she has in there. This includes a checklist that will feel familiar to any parent rushing out the door, as she reveals toys and snacks.

Lindsay Lohan's bag shows she is a committed mom raising a toddler. She recalls buying it in Paris when she was 18 or 19, telling Vogue Arabia, "So it's been through a lot, but it's still good and holds everything."

Lohan has "a two and a half year old" son, and she keeps a Tide stain remover pen close because, as she puts it, "I never know if I'm gonna get stained or not." Moreover, she carries snacks for both of them. Apart from that, she travels with a phone charger, wallet, journal, multiple brushes, an on-the-go makeup edit, including Merit products, among many other things.

Then she reveals the toys. Lohan says, "I have dinos in my bag. My son's dinos," explaining that she keeps backups for those moments when her little one suddenly asks for one — and it is practical parenting, because many toddlers calm down faster when they have something familiar in hand, especially during transitions.

The mom, being very efficient, admits, "I have bags inside of bags," adding, "I am Mary Poppins to some extent." Well, Lindsay Lohan's bag may be Hermès, but what's inside says more about her being a toddler mom than about her glamorous life — snacks, pens, keepsakes, polaroids, and a couple of dinosaur toys, just in case her son needs one on the go.

Lohan shares her 2-year-old son, Luai Shammas, with her husband, Bader Shammas.
