'Everybody's got an opinion on it:' Kansas' Darryn Peterson on injury narrative

One of the bigger storylines this men's college basketball season has been the health status of Kansas basketball guard Darryn Peterson, one of the sport's top players.

In an interview with ESPN's Myron Medcalf, Peterson spoke out on the current narrative, which has been sparked by social media, regarding his availability for games or coming out of them as he continues to deal with the numerous injuries he has sustained this season.

"Everybody's got an opinion on it," Peterson recently told ESPN. "But basketball is my life. If I could have been out there every game this year, I would have. If you would have asked me last year, what were my goals for this year, I would never mention missing games. So all this stuff kind of just happened, but I've got to deal with it."

Peterson's comments to Medcalf are some of his first public remarks this season, as he has not spoken in many availabilities this season.

The Jayhawks 6-foot-6 freshman guard has missed 11 games this season, including Kansas' loss to Duke in the Champions Classic and its win over then-No. 1 Arizona on Feb. 9, with the majority of those being due to a lingering hamstring injury. He has also not been able to finish games due to cramps from that hamstring injury.

However, in the 16 games that Peterson has played in, he has lived up to the hype and expectations that surrounded his name heading into the season. He scored 32 points in an overtime win over TCU, scored 26 points on 11-of-13 shooting against Baylor, and 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting against Oklahoma State before exiting due to injury.

Ahead of Kansas' eventual 84-68 loss to Cincinnati on Feb. 21, the Jayhawks' second loss at home this season, Bill Self told reporters that he wasn't buying into the false narrative surrounding Peterson's ongoing injuries. He doubled down on that following Kansas' 16-point loss to the Bearcats, their third-worst home loss in Self's tenure.

"There is a way to change the narrative — play, finish," Self said on Feb. 20. "Now, if his body allows him to, fantastic. If it doesn't allow him to, then they'll say something again the next game. But that's the way to get people to quit talking.

"It's not me saying it's not fair, I don't think that really keeps anybody from having an opinion at a national level or on this level or any level to be quite candid, but I do think it's easy for everybody to say what's happening within a situation that really doesn't know the situation."

Is Darryn Peterson playing tonight for Kansas basketball vs Houston?

All signs point to a "yes" for Peterson's status against Houston on Monday. The Jayhawks enter Monday's critical Big 12 game with a 40-0 record on "Big Monday" games at Allen Fieldhouse under Self.

The Big 12 Conference does not allow a lot of time to bask in the glow of victory as No. 16 Texas Tech and red-hot Cincinnati get right back at it Tuesday at Lubbock, Texas.

Texas Tech's first step without one of the program's best players in recent history could not have turned out have much better this past weekend. Cincinnati just notched its biggest victory over the last several years with a road triumph at Kansas.

In its first game without star big man J.T. Toppin -- whose season ended with a knee injury on Feb. 17 -- Texas Tech (20-7, 10-4 Big 12) barreled past Kansas State 100-72 on Saturday.

Cincinnati (15-12, 7-7) won its fourth game in a row, the longest current streak in the conference, with a surprising 84-68 road romp Saturday against the then-No. 8 Jayhawks.

The Bearcats stumbled to an 0-3 start in league play, then dropped four of five in late January and their first game this month to stir up rumblings about coach Wes Miller's job security.

Since that skid, Cincinnati has averaged 86.5 points in its four wins in a row to get its season back on track. It is an impressive turnaround for a team that ranks next-to-last in the league with 72.7 points a contest.

"This is a great moment for our program to win a game in a place like this against a team like this," Miller said. "There hasn't been a moment when guys on this team haven't continued to work hard to figure things out."

The Red Raiders are still in a similar phase as they adjust to how to operate without Toppin, the 2024-25 Big 12 Player of the Year and a consensus preseason All-American.

Demolishing Kansas State was a good first step and the recipe included a dominant rebounding performance (40-28), with six players chiming in with four or more. Texas Tech also got aggressive with the paint opened up without Toppin and cashed in by knocking down 19 of 23 free throws.

The Red Raiders didn't stray too far away from the things that have helped them shine this season. Led by Donovan Atwell's hot hand, Texas Tech drained 13 of 28 3-point attempts. Atwell was 6 of 9 on the way to 26 points, while Christian Anderson chimed in with 21 points and nine assists. Luke Bamgboye stepped into the starting lineup in place of Toppin and contributed 12 points, a team-high six defensive boards and three blocks.

"Our team came together and played for each other," Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said. "It really says a lot about this group and how much they love each other and how competitive we were through a tough game and situation."

Cincinnati could be a different kind of test for the revamped Red Raiders. As impactful as the offensive surge has been, the Bearcats' strength is a defense that ranks fourth in the Big 12 at 67.0 points per game and fifth in both field-goal percentage defense (41.2%) and 3-point defense (31.6%).

Baba Miller leads Cincinnati with 13.9 points and 10.2 rebounds a game, while Moustapha Thiam has supplied 11.8 points and 6.2 boards a contest and pumped in a career-best 28 points in the win on Saturday.

After an 0-5 start in Big 12 road games, the Bearcats have won their last two.

Indiana Pacers star point guard Tyrese Haliburton was already missing the 2025-26 NBA season as he continues his recovery from a torn Achilles tendon, but he will be away from the team for a separate issue.

Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said Sunday, Feb. 22, that Haliburton has come down with shingles and will spend two to three weeks away from the team to recover.

"It's a very painful thing," Carlisle told reporters. "... He will make a full recovery, but this happened over the last few days. He was meeting us in D.C. and had some odd symptoms and he came back (to Indianapolis). That's what's happening with him. We certainly wish him a speedy recovery. It's a unique case and a unique situation, but I talked to him a few times and he's always in a good mood, so he'll get through it."

According to the Mayo Clinic, shingles is a common viral infection caused by the same virus that results in chicken pox, varicella-zoster. Shingles produces a painful rash and is most likely to occur in persons older than 60, though anyone who has contracted chicken pox can contract it.

Haliburton, 25, suffered his Achilles rupture early in Game 7 of the NBA Finals in June. The Pacers have confirmed that Haliburton will spend the entire 2025-26 season recovering from the injury. The Pacers are 15-43 and have the worst record in the Eastern Conference.

Haliburton, a two-time All-Star, averaged 17.5 points, 8.8 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game last season. He starred in the playoffs and became known for his late-game heroics, hitting several game-tying or game-winning shots in the final seconds of massive games.

Haliburton has shared his progress from his Achilles rupture, including posting videos on social media of him working out and even participating in pick-up games.

Geno Auriemma broke a tie with Tara VanDerveer for most appearances by a coach in The women's basketball Top 25 on Monday when UConn was again a unanimous No. 1.

Auriemma has the Huskies ranked for the 655th time. UConn was atop all 31 ballots from the national media panel. The Huskies (29-0) are the last unbeaten team in Division I basketball and have won 45 consecutive games dating to last season.

The top five teams remained unchanged in the rankings this week with UCLA, South Carolina, Texas and Vanderbilt following the Huskies.

The rest of the top 10 changed as Michigan, Louisville, Duke and Ohio State all lost games last week.

LSU moved up one spot to sixth with Oklahoma jumping up four places to seventh. Michigan dropped two spots to eighth and Iowa was ninth. The Hawkeyes moved up four places after beating the Wolverines on Sunday. Louisville was 10th.

Duke, which ended its 17-game winning streak Sunday in a loss to Clemson, dropped to 12th, and Ohio State was 13th.

Falling Lady Vols

Tennessee dropped out of the poll for the first time this season after losing last week to Ole Miss, Texas A&M and Oklahoma. The Lady Vols have dropped seven of nine games for the first time in school history. Tennessee had been ranked for the past 31 polls.

"We've had an incredibly tough stretch," coach Kim Caldwell said after Sunday's loss to Oklahoma. "You just (have to) be honest with your team, and they can handle it or they cannot. And sometimes the honesty is not good and sometimes the honesty is good."

The schedule doesn't get any easier for the Lady Vols with regular season games left against LSU and Vanderbilt.

Welcome back

Princeton re-entered the poll this week at No. 25. The Tigers (21-3) fell out last week after losing to Columbia on Feb. 13. The Lions have beaten the Tigers twice this season, and Princeton's other loss came to No. 14 Maryland.

Conference supremacy

The SEC remained the top conference with nine teams in the poll. The Big Ten is next with seven. The Big 12 has four teams, the Atlantic Coast Conference has three and the Ivy League and Big East each have one.

Games of the week

No. 8 Michigan at No. 13 Ohio State, Wednesday. The two rivals meet with Big Ten Conference seeding on the line. The Wolverines lost their last game, falling at then-No. 13 Iowa on Sunday. The Buckeyes have dropped two of their last three games.

No. 12 Duke at No. 21 North Carolina, Sunday. The Blue Devils beat the Tar Heels in the first meeting earlier this month and will look to wrap up the ACC regular season crown with another victory.

Phoenix Suns swingman Dillon Brooks will be sidelined four to six weeks with a broken left hand sustained this weekend, ESPN reported Monday.

Brooks left Saturday's home game against the Orlando Magic with 4:46 left in the first quarter and did not return. Phoenix went on to beat the Magic 113-110 in double overtime.

Brooks, 30, is averaging a career-best 21.2 points and 3.7 rebounds in 50 games (all starts) during his first season with Phoenix.

The short-handed Suns are also without All-Star guard Devin Booker (right hip strain) for about a week and guard Haywood Highsmith (right knee) for two to three weeks.

Phoenix entered Monday in seventh place in the Western Conference, two games behind the Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves.

A six-week absence would see Brooks return to the court in early April. The regular season ends April 12.

Brooks has career averages of 14.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 542 games (515 starts) for the Memphis Grizzlies (2017-23), Houston Rockets (2023-25) and Suns.

Worst to first, the Raiders are on top of the world entering the 2026 offseason.

As the league year begins in March, Las Vegas is steering by virtue of finishing 3-14 and securing the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

What do the Raiders need to return to respectability? In a word: plenty.

But with ten selections in the draft and more than $87 million under the salary cap, the Raiders are well-armed to restock a roster with significant needs to become competitive in the AFC West.

Mikaela Shiffrin returns to slopes: Where to watch US star's next ski race

Fresh off her gold medal-winning performance in the women's slalom at the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics, Mikaela Shiffrin isn't about to slow down.

The American skiing star has to make her way from the Dolomites to the Pyranees for the next stop on the World Cup circuit.

Shiffrin is far and away the overall leader in the 2025-26 World Cup standings, due in large part to her dominance in the slalom – with a healthy advantage in both over Camille Rast of Switzerland, the slalom silver medalist in Cortina.

When asked about her future plans after winning the gold, Shiffrin told Salt Lake City TV station KSL: "Get right on to my super-G skis, actually, next week – which feels like a year away – but try to get some super-G training so I can hopefully race the remainder (of the) World Cup of this season."
