Matthew Perry’s brother-in-law reflects on “Friends” star after the death of his sister: ‘I miss you both’

David Bowick is opening up about the deaths of his sister, Zoe Bowick Levine, and brother-in-law, Matthew Perry.
“He was someone the whole world felt like they knew, but to me, he was just my brother,” Bowick shared in a tribute. “He always started our interactions with ‘Hey, brother’ and I always loved that.”
Perry died at 54 in 2023, while Bowick Levine died at 46 in September.
Matthew Perry’s brother-in-law is opening up about a dark chapter in their shared family history.
“There’s a documentary about my brother-in-law Matthew Perry coming out on Netflix Tuesday. I’m in it very briefly, but my lovely wife is in it quite a bit,” David Bowick wrote in a Facebook post on Saturday. He’s referring to The One About Matthew Perry, a new, three-part docuseries from Quiet On Set’s Emmy-nominated executive producer, Mary Robertson.
The post Bowick shared was accompanied by a photo of himself with Perry at his wedding to Mia Perry Bowick. Mia stands to his left, while Zoe Bowick Levine, his sister, stands to his right. “This is Matthew and my sister Zoe at our wedding. Now they’re both gone.”
Bowick Levine died in September at the age of 46, three years after Perry’s death in 2023 at the age of 54. Though Bowick explained that he’s “never really talked much about Matthew publicly,” his sister’s death prompted him to share a sincere tribute to them both.

“He was someone the whole world felt like they knew, but to me, he was just my brother. He always started our interactions with ‘Hey, brother’ and I always loved that,” he continued. “It’s a strange thing to watch the world remember someone while you’re still trying to figure out how to live without the people you remember them with.”
Bowick, a music producer and sound designer, noted that he was “asked to write some music for the documentary, and it meant a lot to be able to contribute a small piece to telling his story. So if you watch, don’t skip the credits on episodes 1 and 2. Those are mine.”
In closing, he left his family, friends, and Perry’s fans with the following sentiment: “I don’t have anything particularly profound to say. I just wanted to share this picture of two people I wish were still here. I miss you both so much.”

Zoe Bowick Levine died on Sept. 10. According to a heartfelt tribute shared by Kinesis Project, a dance company and theater with locations in New York City and Seattle that Bowick Levine helped found, she died after a battle with cancer and is survived by her husband, Ben, and their two children, Leo and Clara.
“She leaves behind a legacy of movement, sparkle, determination, authenticity, persistence, patience, grace, diplomacy and wisdom,” read the remembrance in part. “We will all keep her undimmable light present and moving into the future with us.”

Perry died on Oct. 28, 2023. His death was later revealed as resulting from “acute effects of ketamine.”
“All great stories have comedy and tragedy in them, and that certainly was Matthew’s story,” Mia Perry Bowick says in the trailer for The One About Matthew Perry. “My brother would talk about that feeling of emptiness or loneliness that he couldn’t quite fill... He spent $7 million trying to get sober. That’s how seriously he took his disease.”
The One About Matthew Perry debuts on Netflix on Oct. 27.
