Old St. Nick is sleeping off a very long night. Meanwhile, Santa Timmy is now delivering the goods.
Timothée Chalamet is back in the awards conversation – as a ping-pong wizard! – with the genre-busting sports movie "Marty Supreme," a Christmas release in theaters for people who need a break after much wrapping paper, bows and tinsel. Another is "Song Sung Blue," a music biopic starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson as a Midwestern Neil Diamond tribute act. (Yes, they sing "Sweet Caroline," so no worries there.) But there are plenty of new movies to watch at home on streaming – enough for a mega holiday guide – as you ready for next week's "Stranger Things" finale on New Year's Eve.
Now on to the good stuff:
See Timothée Chalamet at the top of his game in 'Marty Supreme'
Marty Mauser (Timothee Chalamet) has big dreams of being a ping-pong champ, if his own selfish attitude doesn't derail him first, in 1950s-set sports comedy "Marty Supreme."
The best movies of 2025 are an interesting bunch: a musical vampire gangster flick, a stand-up comedy film about divorce, a religious murder mystery, et al. One of them, "Marty Supreme," is a genre-defying, table-tennis period comedy thriller, with Timothée Chalamet as a highly ambitious young man with a penchant for ticking people off. It's a different (and really cool) take on the sports movie, and a sly critique about postwar America's presence on the world stage, plus Chalamet is sensational as a ping-pong star needing to grow up. (Peep my ★★★½ review.)
My bud Patrick Ryan has interviewed Chalamet a few times over the years, and they caught up again for "Marty," talking about ping-pong's connection to ballet and the actor's penchant for starring in Christmas releases. "We've made it a little tradition in my family to see them together," Chalamet says. "My mom's already seen 'Marty' four times – that's more than I have at this point!" Patrick also chatted up his costar Gwyneth Paltrow, who discussed having to do "a lot of reckoning" before returning to acting.
Hear the mighty Kate Hudson sing in 'Song Sung Blue'
Kate Hudson poses for a USA TODAY portrait for "Song Sung Blue," opening Christmas Day.
I, for one, did not know that Kate Hudson could sing. Like, really sing. She's good, y'all. Her 2024 album "Glorious" was a fascinating listen, showing a new side of an artist that you think you know, and Hudson puts her powerhouse vocals to use in the sentimental true-life drama "Song Sung Blue." Like a lot of music biopics, the performances are better than the movie, but Hudson and Hugh Jackman are dynamite crooning Neil Diamond hits. (Peep my ★★½ review.)
My colleague Bryan Alexander interviewed Hudson about her son's one-word review of the film and how she screened it for her famous parents, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. "It was wonderful to watch it for the first time with them because it reminded me of movies I saw as a little girl that made me say, 'I want to do that!' " she says. And Jackman shared with Bryan about how the movie is a "love letter" to Diamond: "He makes everyone feel like he's singing just to them."

Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) comes into his own in the final episodes of "Stranger Things."
More than a decade ago, Netflix's "Stranger Things" began with a focus on Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), a young Indiana boy who disappeared into the Upside Down, and it ends the same way. Patrick talked with Schnapp about this final fifth season, growing up in the public eye, and how his character's embracing of his queer identity has mirrored Schnapp's own. "It was weird for interviewers to ask a 12-year-old kid, 'Do you think Will's gay? Do you relate to the character? And are you gay?' " he says. "It was so personal and overstepping."
So now it's just time to prepare for the "Stranger Things" series finale on New Year's Eve. TV critic Kelly Lawler has recaps for the the fifth, sixth and seventh episodes of this season that just dropped, plus an essay on an important scene that could have been better. (Obviously, spoilers ahoy with those.) However, if you're waiting to binge these before the last one, Brendan Morrow has a full series recap that catches folks up.
