In a world that’s desperate for authenticity, Charley Hull has no filter. On a tour that’s desperate for attention, Charley Hull can’t step up to the mic enough.

Hull has tossed out that phrase many times over the course of her career, whether the topic is cigarettes or politics (see President Donald Trump state dinner at Windsor Castle) or pranks.

This week at the AIG Women’s British Open, 30-year-old Hull went viral for what many considered a cruel prank played on longtime caddie Adam Woodward. Hull bought a fake scratch-off lottery ticket at a prank store in Blackpool earlier this week and tricked Woodward into thinking he’d won 100,000 pounds. To pour fuel on the matter, she videoed the whole thing and posted it on her social feeds.

Woodward and Hull don’t have a typical player/caddie relationship. She thinks of him like a brother. And Woodward insists he wasn’t bothered by it all. Thought it was funny.

On Thursday, Hull was asked if she’d seen the online backlash over the prank. She hadn’t, as she typically deletes her social media accounts during majors.

That’s when she first said that everyone needs to lighten up, and if they don’t like it, “they can lump it.”

On Friday, not long after Hull holed out for birdie from one of 166 bunkers at Royal Lytham & St. Annes, Hull admitted to only sleeping for three hours the night before. When asked if the prank fallout impacted her, she said no. It actually fuels her.

“They actually make me want to do better because I think we live in a world where you can't do anything wrong these days,” she said. “Then it stops people from living the life they want to. I think I don't care. I just live me. My family and friends around me, we just live it how we want to. Our household, we got a lot of banter, and are always taking the mickey out of each other. It's just the way I've been brought up, and I think people just need to be a bit more tough-skinned.”

Hull even took it a step further, saying that those who are in the limelight would be silly not to expect negative comments.

“I think you see some people saying I really struggle from these comments,” said Hull. “They're almost looking for sympathy. I'm just like, imagine – you're in such a good position in life. There are people way worse off in life and you're moaning about what people are saying about you.

“I just think like, I don't know, grow a pair of balls and just forget about it, do you know what I mean? Because if that's the worst thing in life, people saying bad stuff about you, you really have not got life that bad.”

Hull credits some of that perspective to her Polish grandmother, whom she called “Babby,” a tough, ruthless woman who led a difficult life. Hull, by contrast, plays a game for a living and has made more than $12 million inside the ropes. She knows she’s fortunate.

After a second-round 71, Hull trails clubhouse leader Shiho Kuwaki by four strokes, still within striking distance heading to the weekend. To win this championship, her home Open, is the dream scenario.

Hull said she’d buy 100 proper scratch-off tickets for Woodward if they have a good week.

Probably a good idea either way.

CAMP DAVID, Maryland/WASHINGTON, July 31 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said his "anti-weaponization" fund was dead despite his affinity for it amid a standoff with fellow Republicans in the Senate that has stalled his bid to get acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche in the role permanently.

"It is dead, but I wish it weren't, to be honest with you. I think people were horribly treated, horribly abused," he said during a cabinet meeting, one day after threatening to withdraw the nomination until next year after two key opposing senators leave office. "I'd like to see them compensated for the pain."

He urged Republican senators to confirm Blanche and warned that they "will never get anybody like him." He also criticized Senator John Cornyn for holding up Blanche's nomination, claiming that the Republican lawmaker supported Blanche until Trump endorsed Cornyn's primary opponent.

"I’d be upset also," Trump said. "I fully understand it. He shouldn't be that way. I shouldn't be that way."

Cornyn and fellow Republican Senator Thom Tillis have held up Blanche's nomination while seeking written assurances that the Justice Department will not set up the $1.8 billion "anti-weaponization" program. Trump critics have derided it as a slush fund to reward supporters with taxpayer money.

Blanche has previously told senators that the fund was dead, but has so far not agreed to put that in writing.

Earlier in the day, Trump defended Blanche in a social media post, calling for his confirmation and referring to the fund in the present tense.

Tillis said Trump's post indicated he thought it was operational.

"The president made it clear today that the so-called Anti-Weaponization Fund is still alive, which is exactly why we are attempting to formally end it," Tillis said in a post on X. His office did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Trump's statement that the fund was dead.

Tillis said he would keep working to break the impasse and blamed "an incompetent personal advisor" to Trump for standing in the way of a settlement.

Cornyn and Tillis, whose Senate terms end in early January, were closer to an agreement after meeting with Blanche late Thursday afternoon, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Blanche, Trump's former personal lawyer who was named acting attorney general in April, has also met with Republican Senator John Curtis.

Despite the dispute, Blanche likely does not need to be confirmed to effectively serve as attorney general for Trump's remaining term in the White House, given that acting officials can serve as long as their nomination is pending in the Senate and their nomination is not formally rejected or withdrawn.

The "anti-weaponization" fund was crafted as part of a legal settlement between Trump and the Justice Department to resolve his $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service over allegedly mishandling his tax records, but it was put on hold amid opposition from congressional Republicans.

The fund could benefit Trump allies who have said they were unfairly targeted by the federal government for their involvement in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol after Trump lost his re-election bid in 2020.

Cornyn on Thursday said he was waiting for the Justice Department to formalize assurances that it would not implement the fund. Cornyn and Tillis also object to an IRS deal that would prevent tax audits of Trump and his associates.

Trump wrote that the fund "will not benefit me, but rather the great American Patriots who were hunted down like dogs and whose lives were unfairly and illegally destroyed."

Tillis said those who attacked law enforcement should still be in prison and should not get a check from the federal government.

This week, Ella Langley beat a chart record held by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. The country singer’s Choosin’ Texas has now spent 15 weeks atop the BillboardHot 100, making it the longest-running US No 1 by a female solo artist for a non-holiday single. The previous record holders, Houston’s I Will Always Love You and Carey’s We Belong Together, were bombastic pop events, the sort of unassailable hits that make sense as Hot 100 chartbusters. Choosin’ Texas, meanwhile, is a midtempo two-step with a relaxed vocal delivery and decidedly retro sound.

For Victoria Banks, a Nashville-based songwriter and instructor at Belmont University, the song’s breeziness is key to its success. “It’s a sleeper hit – it’s understated and unassuming,” she says. “Everything about the song throws back to a simpler time in country music that people are really craving.”

The lyrics to Choosin’ Texas tell the story of a Tennessee woman who accompanies her lover on a trip back to his home state of Texas – and discovers in real time that “his heart still belongs to the Lone Star state”. It’s heartbreak on a classic-country scale, which Langley expresses with lyrical homages to decades-old hits by Jerry Reed, Ronnie Millsap and George Strait. The danceable, guitar- and pedal steel-forward production evokes country hits from the late 70s and early 80s, albeit with a contemporary gloss.

“There are a lot of throwback elements to the song, but it was obviously recorded in a very modern way,” Banks says. “It’s not so throwback that we don’t relate to it.”

In a sign of country music’s continued dominance in the pop sphere, Choosin’ Texas is one of five country songs currently in the US top 10 on the all-genre Hot 100. Given country’s abysmal track record when it comes to playing women, it’s not for nothing that each of these songs – including Taylor Swift’s I Knew It, I Knew You, Stella Lefty’s Boston and Langley’s own Be Her and her Morgan Wallen duet I Can’t Love You Anymore – features a woman as the lead artist.

Historically, during moments when country crosses over into the mainstream, tensions arise over just how far the music has strayed from its roots. “Someone killed country music, cut out its heart and soul,” George Strait famously declared on Murder on Music Row, a 2000 duet with Alan Jackson lamenting the state of the Nashville industry in the late 90s – when artists including Faith Hill and Lonestar ruled the airwaves with ultrasmooth, country-pop confections. In more recent history, Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter provoked endless discourse about what constitutes country music and who gets to participate.

Choosin’ Texas has largely dodged criticism of being “too pop”, in part due to the cleverness of the songwriting. Co-written with Miranda Lambert, Joybeth Taylor and Luke Dick, the song folds country signifiers – two-stepping, Texas and Tennessee, the interstate – into the emotional story in a way that feels organic. Even the requisite Jack Daniels mention serves a narrative purpose; it matters that it’s Tennessee whiskey she’s drinking all by herself.

“All of these writers have been working in the Nashville market for years,” Banks explains. “So even though this is a song that they said they spat out in 30 minutes or whatever, it was coming through their instincts that have been developed for a long time about what is hooky and what pulls people in.”

Brian Mansfield, managing editor of the trade publication Country Insider, says that the song’s twangy-but-smooth sound makes it appealing to program directors – whether in country, pop or adult contemporary – who tend to avoid songs that would sound jarringly rootsy next to fluffier pop fare. “It’s a song that sounds good next to almost anything you can play, and that is an underrated part of creating the music mix for any format,” he says.

The song’s versatility also makes it well-suited to streaming playlists. According to Luminate, Choosin’ Texas racked up over half a billion streams in the first half of the year alone, making it the most-streamed song in the country by a wide margin.

As well as co-signs from veteran singers such as Swift and Shania Twain, the song has also – as is now often a prerequisite for streaming success – been boosted by various viral social media moments. In October, shortly after Choosin’ Texas was released, TikTok user Lane Gorrell posted a video of himself performing an interpretive dance to the song in front of some nonplussed-looking cows. The clip racked up millions of views, and Gorrell eventually took his dance all the way to the Grand Ole Opry.

Then came the misheard lyric videos. Around January, in an echo of Taylor Swift’s famous “Starbucks lovers” saga from 2014, users started posting videos claiming they misheard the title phrase as “Jews in Texas” or even “Jews and Taxes”. Some also reported hearing the words “drinking Jack all by myself” as “drink and jack off by myself”. Langley laughed off the misheard lyrics in an interview with podcaster Theo Von in April – which of course only drew more attention to the trend. A clip from the same interview of a clearly smitten Von butchering the word “tzatziki” in front of his crush also went viral.

Enter the Ella Fellas. Langley’s male fanbase has made itself known with all manner of viral content, from uncomfortably earnestlip-syncing videos to clips of themselves looking enraptured at her concerts; there have even been Ella Fella birthday parties. Langley’s team has nurtured this following, reposting popular videos and sending Ella Fellas T-shirts to some of her most ardent supporters. In comparison with many pop fandoms, whose obsessions can skew antisocial, the Ella Fellas seem like a remarkably sane and joyous bunch.

“It’s one of those things that brings people together,” says Hunter Massey, a student at Georgia Southern University and TikToker whose videos of himself going buck wild to country songs have earned him an audience of his own. “There can be people from different walks of life, different parts of the country, but we all seem to have this love for her music, and that’s what makes us Ella Fellas.”

Massey is among the growing ranks of creators who get paid to post videos using artists’ songs on TikTok – including Langley’s. He says he sometimes turns down requests for songs that don’t speak to him, but he’s never had a problem promoting her music.

For him and other Ella Fellas, the appeal is in how down-to-earth she seems. She’s bolstered this perception with songs including Dandelion, where she sings that she “wasn’t made for a fancy crystal vase” and Somethin’ Simple, which finds her musing about giving up stardom in exchange for “a house on a hill, horse in the yard”.

“She’s not flashy, Hollywood, whatever,” Massey says. “It’s what we like about her.”

Hundreds of people in central Greece are being evacuated by sea after the coastal town they were in became hemmed in by one of the many wildfires raging across the country.

Around 500 people, mostly tourists, were left stranded after the fire broke out near Agios Vasileios in Viotia on Friday morning and rapidly spread on strong winds, local media report.

Another fire has broken out further along the coast, while firefighters continue to battle a large wildfire on the Greek island of Crete that ignited earlier this week.

Greece is one of several European nations suffering devastating wildfires after a succession of heatwaves created favourable conditions for them.

Firefighters in Portugal and Spain are still tackling blazes spanning thousands of hectares, with a new heatwave this week raising the risk of a massive fire near Madrid reigniting.

The area of central Greece where the two fires broke out this morning was considered the most at-risk due to high winds complicating firefighting efforts.

More than 200 people have been evacuated and another 100 are due to be taken by boat from Agios Vasileios, while emergency workers are attempting to safely remove those still in the town, according to Greek news agency Amna, citing fire officials.

People there had earlier been told by authorities to move further inland before the fire reached the outskirts of the town.

The fire further along the coast burnt through farmland before moving through the rural town of Xironomi.

Firefighters on Crete continue to tackle persistent hotspots in a wildfire that has torched thousands of hectares of land and prompted the temporary evacuation of 8,000 people.

Fires have also broken out on the islands of Paros, Andros and Kalymnos.

Most wildfires are sparked by humans, whether intentionally or accidentally, but climate change is making the conditions for them more common.

Last winter was mild and wet, encouraging vegetation growth, which has then dried out in successive hot spells, generating fuel for wildfires.

In Spain, more than 200,000 hectares of land has burnt in 2026 - roughly five times above the average by this point in the year - while the burnt land in Portugal is also higher than usual, EU data shows.

Hundreds of firefighters battled a blaze near Valpaços in northern Portugal that has torn through 15,000 hectares including vineyards and olive groves, news agency Lusa reported, citing officials. Five people have been injured by the fire, which has been burning since Tuesday.

A fire in the Ávila region of Spain, which has now been stabilised, is now considered the largest recorded wildfire in the nation's history, while fires that burned 66,000 hectares to the west of Madrid are contained.

However, officials are warning of a high risk of fires breaking out or re-emerging across most of the country until at least Sunday.

There are currently four active fires along Turkey's Mediterranean coastline, including near the popular tourist centre of Antalya, according to the country's agricultural ministry.

It says there have been 206 wildfires across the country since Wednesday.

Vitor Matos was named Swansea boss after the sacking of Alan Sheehan

Head coach Vitor Matos has agreed a new Swansea City contract which ties him to the Championship club until 2030.

Matos, 38, was appointed on a deal running until 2029 last November.

But Swansea's progress since Matos took charge has convinced the club's hierarchy to hand the Portuguese improved terms.

"From the moment I arrived here, I have sensed how powerful the connection between Swansea City and the fans and community is," said Matos.

"This is something very special, it is a feeling myself and the players love, and the desire to keep building that and sharing great moments together is one of the key motivations in extending my contract with the club."

Chief executive Tom Gorringe said "stability and consistency of vision" were important at what he called an "exciting time for the football club".

"Vitor made a considerable impact following his appointment in November of last year and we are excited about the direction in which he is taking Swansea City," Gorringe added.

"This new deal is a reflection of our belief in the work he and his team have done since joining us, and what we believe we can accomplish together under Vitor's stewardship."

Swansea finished 11th in 2025-26, just as they did in the previous campaign

Matos had only brief experience as a manager, at Portuguese club Maritimo, when Swansea turned to him after missing out on Kim Hellberg to Middlesbrough last year.

A former elite development coach at Liverpool – and assistant boss at Red Bull Salzburg – Matos steered Swansea clear of relegation trouble before securing an 11th-placed finish thanks to 14 wins in his 30 league games in charge.

Swansea will begin Matos' first full season in charge with increased expectations based on their improvement last term.

Matos has been backed in the transfer market this summer, with Swansea thought to have spent a combined total of about £15m on Moussa Yeo, Elijah Just and Joseph Opoku as well as bringing in defender Stephen Welsh on a free.

There are more signings to come, although Swansea have sold influential midfielder Ethan Galbraith and it remains to be seen whether Zan Vipotnik, last season's Championship top scorer, will still be at the club when the summer transfer window closes.

"We put good foundations in place last season, but now we have to look forward, we have to keep pushing and making progress," Matos added.

"We have enjoyed a positive pre-season, and made good additions to our squad, and I am looking forward to the season ahead and beyond."

Matos' team play their final pre-season friendly at home to Leganes on Saturday before hosting Birmingham City in the Carabao Cup the following weekend.

The new league campaign starts with a trip to Stoke City on Saturday, 15 August.

A video shared by Donald Trump’s “most beautiful” aide has been hit with backlash on social media after the president attempted to walk off with an award for Montana State’s national championship football team.

On Tuesday, Margo Martin, a special assistant to the president and communications advisor, shared a video on X of Trump, whose marriage to Melania is at its lowest point due to a 'disturbing' reason, meeting with the MSU football team, who were at the White House to celebrate their 2025 FCS national championship.

In the 21-second clip, Trump is spotted being handed one of the team’s championship rings. After observing the ring for a moment, Trump proceeded to turn around and walk away from the team, ring in hand. It comes after Karoline Leavitt accidentally humiliated Trump as critics asked about his 'diaper'.

The players in front of him burst into laughter as he jokingly walked away with one of their championship rings.

Trump quickly returned the ring, as a player told him, “I got to take the top off, Mr. President.”

“What’s in there?” Trump asked as the player showed him how to remove the ring's top. The president patted the player on the arm before turning and walking away once more, this time without the award in his hand.

Martin captioned the video “@POTUS walks away with the Montana State University FCS National Championship ring.” Trump once branded his 31-year-old aide as “the most beautiful photographer in the world.”

Critics of the president’s joking behavior flooded Trump’s aide’s comment section with disapproval of the moment. One user slammed the president, writing, “Trump still stealing awards he never earned? Petulant child.”

“Trump steals another award. Shocking,” another user wrote. A third wrote, “He stole another prize that didn’t belong to him.”

“A presidential souvenir from a college team? That ring belongs to the players, not to a politician,” said someone else on X.

While the team presented the president with a customized MSU jersey, he wasn’t gifted a championship ring, and it appeared he was joking about taking the award for a brief moment.

This isn’t the first time Trump has faced controversy in relation to awards. At the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, Trump appeared onstage at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to present Chelsea with the championship medals with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Critics slammed Trump for one moment on stage when he was seen stashing one of the medals into the pocket of his suit jacket.

The New York Times reported at the time that Infantino had gifted him a winner’s medal. However, the moment still drew backlash, with viewers questioning why he took a medal.

It comes after disrespectful Trump was slammed for a 'disgusting' act during Lindsey Graham's funeral.
