HONG KONG (AP) — Stock markets in Japan and South Korea hit fresh record highs Monday on enthusiasm over the artificial intelligence boom and as investors await a decision on the Iran war ceasefire extension.

Oil prices gained more than 2% as U.S.-Iran negotiations continued, including on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for global oil and natural gas transit.

U.S. futures edged higher.

Asian shares mostly advanced, and Japan’s and South Korea’s benchmarks hit records during intraday trading, led by technology-related stocks, as investors continued to see growth in AI and other advanced technologies.

Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 gained more than 1.3% and crossed the 67,000 mark for the first time, reaching 67,231.28. Shares of SoftBank Group, the investment company that focuses heavily on AI, rose more than 9% after hitting records last week.

In South Korea, the Kospi index jumped nearly 5% and hit an all-time high of 8,874.16. Samsung Electronics, its biggest company, was up more than 9%. Official data on Monday showed that South Korea’s exports surged 53% year-on-year in May, buoyed by global demand for semiconductors.

The Nikkei 225 was up more than 12% over the past month, while the Kospi soared over 27% during the same period.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was trading 0.9% higher at 25,408.96. The Shanghai Composite index edged down 0.1% to 4,063.72, after China reported over the weekend that factory activity in May softened with signs of slowing new exports demand.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.1% at 8,720.30,.

Taiwan’s Taiex climbed 1.4%, while India's Sensex added 0.6%.

Three months after the Iran war began, uncertainties over a permanent end to the war are still driving market movements and keeping oil prices swinging, even as optimism on robust AI demand and strong corporate earnings have fueled a stock market rally including on Wall Street.

On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump met with advisers in high-level talks but had not decided yet on a tentative plan to extend the Iran war ceasefire by 60 days, while Iran had said a deal was not finalized. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz was also still in limbo. The strait has been largely closed and the U.S. has imposed a sea blockade on Iranian ports.

Brent crude oil, the international standard, rose 2.4% early Monday to $93.33 per barrel. It was approximately $70 a barrel in late February, before the start of the war.

Benchmark U.S. crude was 2.8% higher at $89.76 a barrel.

On Friday, Wall Street stocks reached more records powered by big technology stocks, with the benchmark S&P 500 adding 0.2% in its seventh straight gain to 7,580.06.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.7% to 51,032.46, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite gained 0.2% to 26,972.62.

Dell Technologies surged 32.8% following strong-than-expected results and after it raised its outlook on strong AI-related demand. Microsoft rose over 5.4%, while Broadcom was up 4.7%.

In other dealings, the U.S. dollar rose to 159.48 Japanese yen from 159.25 yen. The euro was trading at $1.1645, down from $1.1667.

June 1 (Reuters) - A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Wayne Cole.

It seems investors are concluding no news is good news when it comes to ‌the Gulf peace talks. President Trump had said he was meeting last Friday to decide ‌on whether to sign off on an extension to the ceasefire, but since then it's been silence, well apart from comparing himself to Elvis.

Defence Secretary Hegseth did pop up to say the U.S. could restart attacks on Iran if a suitable deal was not agreed. Indeed, news came Monday that U.S. forces had struck Iranian targets over the weekend, while Iran said it had targeted an air base used in what it called a U.S. attack ‌and Kuwaiti defences were reported to be intercepting missile and drone strikes.

As it is, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains at a trickle with eight vessels heading outbound on May 30, and only two of those tankers. Pre-war the daily average was 136 or so.

Commodity analysts have for some time been warning that mid-June would be when global oil inventories would be so run down that actual shortages would emerge, so the clock is ticking. Yet Brent is well under $100, even after rising 2.5% today to $93.40.

Asian share markets are ‌too focused on AI to care, and who can blame them? South Korea's main index climbed 28% in May, while Taiwan added 15% and the Nikkei 12%. Samsung Electronics was up 10% on Monday alone as it began shipping a new type of faster chips.

The boom in tech was clear in some truly astounding trade numbers from South Korea where exports were up 53% in May on a year earlier ‌at almost $88 billion. Exports of semiconductors rose 169% and computers 291%.

And yet the Korean won is not far from all-time lows, suggesting Korea's dollar earnings are staying in dollars and not being converted. Presumably much of that is held in Treasury ‌paper, so the AI boom is indirectly helping the U.S. administration fund its massive budget deficit. Swings and roundabouts.

Nvidia boss Jensen Huang kicks off the Computex trade show in Taipei on Monday with a speech about AI in which he is expected to tout his company's latest products as well ‌as the mountain of investment he's planning for Taiwan.

Key developments that could influence markets on Monday:

- EU unemployment for April, EU PMIs, German retail sales

- US ISM manufacturing survey for May, US PMI

LINCOLN, NE — Arizona State will be without one of the best players in college baseball for its NCAA Tournament regional final game against Ole Miss baseball.

The No. 2 region seed Rebels (38-20) face No. 3 Arizona State (39-20) on May 31 (7 p.m., ESPNU) in the NCAA Tournament Lincoln Regional final.

Sophomore ASU infielder Landon Hairston has been suspended for the game. He was ejected in ASU's 11-8 elimination game win over host Nebraska on May 31 after he flung his bat into the air after striking out on a called third strike.

According to NCAA rules, a player who is ejected also misses the team's next game.

Hairston was named the Big 12 Player of the Year. He has a .405 batting average with 28 home runs. He would be eligible to return on June 1 if the Sun Devils can win to force a winner-take-all game.

Hairston could be a fourth-generation Major League Baseball player, joining his father Scott, grandfather Jerry and great grandfather Sam.

A passenger has been put on blast for picking skin off their feet on a packed flight.

It was the pedi crime of the century.

A passenger has been slammed online for engaging in an invasive, unhygienic act while in the sky.

“Lady next to me on flight started picking at the dead skin on her BARE FEET,” her seatmate ranted about the in-flight infraction in a Reddit post with nearly 300 comments.

An accompanying photo showed the woman resting her bare foot on her knee and using her hands to peel away at it as if in a foot spa in the sky.

Commenters were quick to hold the flyer’s feet to the fire.

“Some people genuinely need to be banned from flying for life,” said one while denouncing the offender’s in-flight exfoliation session.

“Lady next to me on flight started picking at the dead skin on her BARE FEET,” the Redditor wrote. Jeetyetdude_/Reddit

“Why do people think bathroom stuff is okay in a non-bathroom setting?” said another, while a third wrote, “I hate people.”

Others suggested ways to stop the woman’s mile-high grooming routine.

“I’d call the flight attendant and gesture towards the foot picker,” suggested one armchair air travel expert.

Another advised them to “take the safety brochure and start fanning that s–t back at them … maybe they will get the hint.”

Unfortunately, air travel can be a nightmare at 30,000 feet of late.

During a recent podiatric infraction, a first-class passenger used their seatmate’s armrest as a footrest during an American Airlines flight.

“First time experiencing the feet in my face in 5 years,” said the victim while detailing their plight on Reddit.

The poster knocked her trotters off the armrest, only for the victim to prop them again.

One of LSU football's top targets in the 2027 class officially reopened his recruitment. Mekhi Williams decommitted from Florida State, according to a post on his social media account on Sunday.

Williams made a trip to Madison for an unofficial visit with Wisconsin, his second in the last month. He also has an official visit schedule to Nebraska in June. Rivals' Prediction Machine lists the Badgers as the favorite to land the four-star safety.

Rivals' Industry Rankings lists Williams as the No. 14 safety and No. 180 overall player in the 2027 cycle. A native of Ruskin, FL, he is the No. 19 player out of the state. He was originally slated to stay home and play for the Seminoles but decided to look at other options.

The Tigers visited Williams earlier this month, putting themselves back on his radar. It remains to be seen if he will take his first trip to Baton Rouge. Head coach Lane Kiffin and staff rolled out the red carpet for several top 2027 recruits last weekend and could do the same for Williams.

LSU's secondary coach Corey Raymond is one of the top DB recruiters in the sport, and he's had plenty of luck landing blue-chip recruits from Florida before. It's hard not to like LSU's chances in this race.

Dua Lipa and Callum Turner have officially married.

The couple tied the knot in an intimate London ceremony, per photos obtained by The Sun and The Daily Mail.

The marriage comes less than a year after the Grammy winner confirmed their engagement.

Dua Lipa and Callum Turner are ready to dance the night away — as husband and wife!

The Grammy-winning singer and rumored James Bond contender married in an intimate Sunday ceremony, according to photographs obtained by The Sun and The Daily Mail.

The nuptials, held at London's Old Marylebone Town Hall on May 31, saw the happy couple celebrated by loved ones who threw confetti and flower petals to celebrate their union. The circle of family and friends in attendance was kept small, per the photos.

The low-key affair saw Lipa don an ivory skirt suit, accessorized with white gloves and a wide-brimmed hat. Turner sported a classic look: a navy double-breasted suit with a matching shirt and tie.

Representatives for Lipa and Turner did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly's request for comment.

More wedding festivities are expected to follow the intimate ceremony, according to an April report from The Sunday Times. Lipa and Turner are reportedly eyeing Palermo, Sicily as a destination for a two-day wedding celebration.

The grand event wherever it is held, has been at least a year in the making. Last year, Lipa confirmed the couple's engagement in her British Vogue cover story.

"Yeah, we’re engaged," Lipa told the outlet in July, "It’s very exciting. This decision to grow old together, to see a life and just, I don’t know, be best friends forever—it’s a really special feeling."

Lipa and Turner have been romantically linked since January 2024, when they were spotted together attending the after-party for the Masters of The Air premiere in Los Angeles. They have since become an Instagram sensation thanks to photos shared front heir various vacations together.

Along with showcasing their love on Instagram, the couple have not held back on voicing the happiness they've found with one another.

In August, Lipa told Harper’s Bazaar UK, "I love love. It is a beautiful thing. It’s a really inspiring thing. You find yourself so intensely falling all the time in the best way possible. That vulnerability is so scary, but I feel so lucky to get to feel it. I’ve spent a lot of time being guarded or protecting my heart, and so I’m letting go of that feeling and just being like, 'Okay, if I’m supposed to get hurt, then this is what’s going to happen.' I have to just allow love."

She added, "I’m happier than ever, so it feels like I’m doing a disservice by not talking about it. … When you’re a public person, anything that’s very personal is very vulnerable. It’s not like I don’t want to share it."
