In 1988, PEOPLE named John F. Kennedy Jr. the Sexiest Man Alive after a picture of him playing football in Central Park shirtless came across PEOPLE's then Executive Editor Jim Seymore's desk. The crowning was befitting for the time, and according to JFK Jr.'s Brown classmate and friend, the Kennedy heir was "thoroughly amused."

Now, nearly 40 years later, JFK Jr.'s high-profile life has found its way back into the zeitgeist with FX's Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, a limited series depicting the romance between the political heir and Calvin Klein associate. JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette met in the early 1990s and eventually tied the knot in 1996. Nearly three years into the marriage, their lives were tragically cut short by a fatal plane accident in July 1999.

Here's a look back at PEOPLE's unfiltered 1988 cover story that crowned John F. Kennedy Jr. the Sexiest Man Alive, showing a cheeky glimpse into the late JFK Jr.'s life as a 27-year-old law student in New York.

"He has something that no film star, no athlete, can duplicate — the aura, the excitement that charges a room when he enters it, simply by virtue of being Kennedy."

Okay, ladies, this one's for you — but first some ground rules. GET YOUR EYES OFF THAT MAN'S CHEST! He's a serious fellow. Third-year law student. Active with charities. Scion of the most charismatic family in American politics and heir to its most famous name.

Get your eyes off that man's extraordinarily defined thighs! What do you think, he strips down to his shorts for a game of touch football in Central Park so strangers can gape at them? They are fantastic, though. Measure three, four feet around. Legend has it that if he lived in Tahiti, instead of Manhattan, he could crack coconuts with them.

Get your eyes off that man's derriere! We saw your gaze wandering back there. It is true that columnist Liz Smith has noted that the boy "has gorgeous buns," but you've got to remember: He has a mind too. This is one hunk who won't be trifled with. Report that he is being courted as a talk show host, as a New York paper once did, and you'll get a call from the family attorney, reminding you that the son of the 35th President of the United States is not interested in showbiz, that he is a "full-time" law student and that he is "pursuing his studies very seriously."

So before we introduce John F. Kennedy Jr., 27, crown him this year's Sexiest Man and stand him a drink (he likes tequila), we want to remind you of the following: He spent the summer learning law at a very prestigious Los Angeles law firm. He attends roller-skating parties to raise funds for the inner city. He introduced his uncle Teddy (D-Mass.) at the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta and made the crowd misty-eyed and nostalgic. He is — and we want you to note we are saying this three times now — a law student, at New York University, no less, a major university. Now you can look at his tushie.

1988 PEOPLE cover

John F. Kennedy Jr., unlike PEOPLE's previous selections as Sexiest Man of the Year — Mel Gibson, Mark Harmon and Harry Hamlin — isn't a professional actor. He doesn't make his living by being on public display. The folks around him argue that he is a private citizen, and his mother, Jacqueline Onassis, has gone to some lengths to keep the press away from her family. But he has been in the public eye for more of his life than any other figure except members of the British royal family — from the time we knew him by his private family name, "John-John," and watched him — as a 3-year-old boy — stand with his mother at the funeral of his father. The nation has followed his life through his studies at Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., and on through Brown University, from which he graduated in 1983 with a B.A. in history.

When did we first notice his spirit? When, at 14, he belted paparazzi with snowballs on the slopes at Gstaad, or when, at 16, he spent three days alone on an uninhabited island off Maine during an Outward Bound project?

When did we first notice his social conscience? No, forget it. You really don't care about his work for his aunt Jean Kennedy Smith's Very Special Arts program for people with learning disabilities, or that he's considered a friendly, decent, remarkably down-to-earth guy who once followed a stranger down the street to return the five bucks the man had dropped.

You'd rather hear some wild tales about his showing up at a Halloween party in Manhattan at 3 a.m. last year as Golden Boy, covered in glitter, or how at Brown, he and his roommate kept a baby pig in the basement of the Phi Psi fraternity house.

There were some "obnoxious types" in the fraternity, an old frat brother says, "but John wasn't one of them. At Brown he was very undercover, and he didn't have any attitude."

What was that, C.W. in Tulsa? You want to know what he looks like naked?! The entire city — no, make that the entire state of Oklahoma — will go to its room and read Profiles in Courage by John F. Kennedy Sr. and not continue this story until you have finished.

The rest of the country may continue reading to see what life is like for this year's Sexiest Man Alive.

Morning in Manhattan, and John F. Kennedy Jr. awakens in his triplex Park Avenue penthouse, gets out of his queen-size brass bed and makes his way through half a dozen nubile representatives of America's Old Money to the Jacuzzi ...

The preceding paragraph, except for the description of the bed, is totally false, by the way. We just threw it in to show you, by contrast, how exceedingly normal, in some ways, the life of John Kennedy Jr. is.

He lives on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, in a messy, book-filled apartment. He prefers to get around, even in winter, on his bike. He is not, in the manner of some other much-photographed young men, a male prima donna: He not only jokes with paparazzi, he's been heard to warn them when they're going to step backward into a pothole. Unlike his mother and sister, Caroline, 30, he seems to enjoy the spotlight. He's been an amateur actor since college, and when he goes for a hamburger at his favorite spot, Jackson Hole on Columbus Avenue and 85th Street, he sprawls at an outside table. Friends say he's a ham, but a lovable ham. At the L.A. law firm of Manatt, Phelps, Rothenberg & Phillips, where he just finished a stint as an $1,100-a-week summer associate, he got along with everybody. "He was one of the guys," one attorney says. "If you didn't know who he was, you wouldn't know who he was, if you see what I mean."

On the other hand, he is not one of the guys. It is not merely his looks — his mother's dark eyes and his father's striking body. (He's 6 ft. 1 in., 187 lbs.) It is that he has something that no film star, no athlete, can duplicate — the aura, the excitement that charges a room when he enters it, simply by virtue of being Kennedy.

The energy, however, hasn't inflated his ego. "I used to pay my rent to the 42nd Street Development Corporation, which was co-founded by Jackie Onassis," says Manhattan restaurateur Jean-Claude Baker. "JFK Jr. was in the office once, wearing big Texas boots with his feet up on the desk. When he saw me, he stood up and said very politely, 'Yes, can I help you?' There is no arrogance in the guy."

This is not to say that, in style and taste, he is a turncoat to his class: He is a prep. And preps do not shlep. When he couldn't get a first-class ticket to West Palm Beach last year, he bought two coach seats: one for himself and one for his guitar. He works out at the Plus One Fitness Club in SoHo, where Cher and Bernadette Peters are also $6,000-a-year members. Many of his close friends — as well as his girlfriend, actress Christina Haag — are haut monde types from Brown.

He loves to party. During the Democratic convention, he went dancing with Ally Sheedy and Rob Lowe at Rupert's, a local club. Once, on a friend's birthday, he sent a stripper to the guy's office. He does, however, have one sober habit: So he won't have his pocket picked, he attaches his wallet to his pants with a little chain.

His style of dress, when he's not suited up to escort his mother, is the aggressively bad taste best described as trust fund funk. John arrives at school in sweats and backpack and his bicycle helmet, or he shows up for an exam in a bright lime-green shirt — an extension, one might say, of the preppy ethos: Except at Racquetball, Never Let 'Em See You Sweat.

"He's interested in school, but he takes things in stride," a classmate says. "He's not one of those guys with a load of books, running around worrying that he's going to get a bad grade." How bright is he? He's certainly not much of a speller. A cheerfully scrawled invitation to his 25th-birthday party at New York's Nirvana Club 1 asked guests to come to the "lessor of two evils." His devotion to his studies, nonetheless, seems sincere; once in Torts class ...

What was that, B.W. in Daytona Beach? You say, "The heck with torts, what does he look like in Bermuda shorts?" Okay, readers, just for that, you're not going to hear one thing about his love life until you read and memorize some serious information about JFK Jr.

1) It is not easy being JFK Jr. at NYU. "People don't know how to approach him," says one woman classmate. "I've sometimes heard [prospective] employers use up the whole 20-minute interview talking about him. A few women employers have said, 'Gee, I'd love to get him into our firm.' "

2) While Democratic Party insiders do not believe JFK Jr. will seek a career in politics, no one disputes his popularity. Though privately he was nervous, his introduction of Senator Kennedy at the Democratic convention got a two-minute standing ovation. "I can't remember a word of the speech," says conservative Republican consultant Richard Viguerie, "but I do remember a good delivery. I think it was a plus for the Democrats and the boy. He is strikingly handsome."

3) During his summer job at the law firm (one of its founding partners was Ted Kennedy's law school roommate), JFK Jr. did not, like some summer associates, turn down assignments. He worked, according to one attorney, on "anything he was given."

And now, on to the women.

As yet unlike his father and grandfather, who were legendary ladies' men, JFK Jr. has long relationships with his girlfriends. For four years, he dated fellow Brown student Sally Munro, 27, who resembles his sister, Caroline.

His steady for the last two years has been another Brown alumna, Christina Haag, 27, daughter of a marketing executive. A graduate of the upper-crusty Brearley School in Manhattan, Christina has known Kennedy since they were both 15. She too is Catholic; like Kennedy, she loves to keep in shape. They've acted together, playing the young lovers in Brian Friel's Winners at Manhattan's Irish Arts Center in 1985. This summer, when Haag appeared in a one-act comedy, Sleeping with the Past, at Hollywood's Tiffany Theater, she and JFK Jr. shared a house in Venice. "They bring out the best in each other," says Robin Saex, the play's director and one of Christina's closest friends.

There was no question, this summer, that Christina was Kennedy's girl. But last year, when they were dating, Kennedy was seen around Manhattan with other women as well: He showed up at a hangout on East 36th Street, Zanzibar and Grill, according to one Kennedy watcher, with a "pretty funky" Madonna look- alike. (But not the real Madonna, as alleged in the tabs. "They barely know each other," says the singer's spokeswoman.)

He was also spotted a few times with Click model Audra Avizienis, 22. "We've been on a few dates, but I'm not seeing him," says Avizienis. "I'm not a girlfriend. He has a girlfriend. Or have they broken up?"

Did she find young Kennedy sexy?

John F. Kennedy Jr.Credit: Getty

"Oh, yes," she says. "He has this quiet sadness. There's something pensive and sad about him." So how does she explain all the partying? "Well," she says, "there's that side to him too."

One cannot, of course, hold the Sexiest Man title forever. Another year, another set of Perfect Pecs. What, then, does Kennedy's family believe his future holds?

Senator Kennedy believes that his nephew will one day be involved in public affairs. "Not necessarily running for office," he said at the time of the Democratic convention, "but trying to make some sort of contribution."

Cousin Bobby Kennedy echoes that belief. "He has a tremendous sense of duty and responsibility," says RFK Jr., who now practices environmental law in Mount Kisco, N.Y. "Whenever any of the cousins need help on one of their [charity] projects, John always participates."

And as a neighbor who has watched John around the Kennedy family compound in Hyannisport observes, "He used to walk to the post office every day, just after he'd taken a shower. You could tell he wanted attention. He'd wear just a towel wrapped around his waistand no shirt."

Wait a minute! Stop that quote! This person isn't a member of thefamily, he's a gossipy neighbor!

But hold on. What's that he's saying?

"He wears the towel practically around his ankles."

Oh, good heavens!!!

"We've never been able to figure out if he's wearing a bathing suit. He's got an extremely good body."

What's that, Akron, Detroit, Cleveland, Paducah, Wichita and Des Moines? You want another look at that body? You want to see that body now?

Hey, why not? JFK Jr. has always been America's favorite son. How terrific, now, he has grown into its sexiest.

Generations of kids grew up playing restaurant, imagining fake dining scenarios and serving up pretend meals — and decades later, Drew Talbert is still at it, but now it's his full-time profession.

The TikTok creator, actor, and writer now makes skits for his account, Bistro Huddy, the name of his fictional restaurant and the backdrop for his viral series of hilarious interactions between customers, staff and cooks, all played by him.

"The inspiration was my wife and I. My wife, Andrea, and I write all of these together, and she is instrumental in everything from giveaways with fans to being part of our Patreon," Talbert, 49, tells PEOPLE. "We both worked in restaurants for years."

Talbert worked as a server for over 20 years while pursuing his dreams of becoming an actor and writer in Los Angeles. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, however, he found himself without a steady income when the restaurant where he worked and the Groundlings Theater, where he taught sketch comedy and improv, both shut down.

It was then that Talbert and his wife decided to start sharing content on TikTok. Soon after, one of his skits about working in restaurants went viral.

"It did numbers, and I was like, 'Oh,'" Talbert shares. "It was this light-bulb moment, thinking, 'If they like this, I've got a million of these from my years as a server.' That's where it started."

While it "started more as a funny restaurant-based relatable idea" that was "unconnected day to day," he knew making it a series with characters people recognized might keep users coming back for more.

"We had this moment where we thought that if we could get people to care more about the characters, this could go on forever. We started really focusing on character, which is also what I learned at the Groundlings," he shares. "It teaches character-based improv sketches. I was used to thinking in terms of creating characters, playing characters, but thinking about the way characters think."

From there, he developed a host of characters, creating fictional servers Nicole, Brad and Bridgette, hostess Amber and the manager, Terry. The skits also feature various cooks, rotating staff and restaurant regulars who have their favorite servers.

Talbert plays all of the characters, usually putting on wigs and different outfits to signify who he's portraying in that moment.

"I love Nicole as a character. She's also based loosely on Andrea. When I started working at this restaurant with Andrea, I was struck by how she stood up for herself and how, as just an employee, she ran the restaurant," Talbert shares. "Nicole's far more exaggerated, but I do love Nicole."

The manager of the restaurant is a man named Terry, whom Talbert admits is "100% based on a real person who was a manager."

"I even stole his name. I worked for Terry, a manager at a place in Nashville, one of my earlier restaurant jobs," Talbert shares.

Talbert tells PEOPLE that it was a bit weird when he quit his job working in an actual restaurant, only to begin working in a fake one.

"I worked for years as a server, and I remember when this all started happening. I was living with my wife and her sister, and the TikToks were taking off," he recalls. "I don't have to be a waiter anymore, but I would put my kid to bed, go in, put on an apron and stand in front of this camera being a waiter again. I would laugh. Like, here I am, I can't escape this."

The reception to his videos "blows us away," Talbert says.

"People say that the funniness of the content has gotten them through a rough patch," he shares. "I've had people in the hospital say the thing that got them through is just rewatching these videos. Or a salesman at the end of the night, saying, 'I just unwind in the hotel room watching your videos.' It is overwhelming and surprising and very gratifying."

He hopes that through his videos, people "feel an escape."

"I want them to feel like they can safely enter this world where they're gonna be just immersed in a funny yet dramatic environment and just feel like they can escape a little bit," he tells PEOPLE. "If nothing else, my wife and I really want to entertain people. That's what we're trying to do. We want you just to be entertained. It gives us a great deal of satisfaction to do that."

Bistro Huddy creator Drew TalbertCredit: TikTok/Angella Choe

Talbert, who has over 10 million followers across platforms, is featured on TikTok's The Discover List 2026 as an icon, defined by creators who set trends, build expansive communities and redefine what it means to be a modern creative. Being recognized for his content later in life is an interesting feeling for Talbert, who says he now can't go to a restaurant without being recognized.

"It just means a lot. It's very exciting. We're at that level where it's still very exciting, it makes us feel really good, and it's not too much," Talbert shares.

The success has also allowed Talbert to give back to the community, as all the merchandise sales through his store are donated to a different charity each month. For February, he's highlighting Drexell and Honeybee's, which is a pay-what-you-can restaurant, so "people that may not be able to afford a restaurant typically, can go in and have the dignity of a real restaurant experience."

In 2020, Ashley Benefield shot and killed her husband of four years, Doug, in what she claimed was an act of self-defense

Though she was charged with manslaughter and second-degree murder, the former ballerina was only convicted of manslaughter

Since 2024, she's been serving her 20-year prison sentence at Lowell Correctional Institution in Ocala, Fla.

Ashley Benefield's 2024 murder trial exploded into a media sensation, earning wall-to-wall coverage across major outlets and true-crime series like Dateline.

The former ballerina's story was so widely consumed that it earned the nickname "The Black Swan Case," in reference to Natalie Portman's 2010 thriller.

"I think what it comes down to is that 'the black swan' has a catchy ring and it sensationalizes my life and my situation, and so they ran with it," Ashley told ABC News in July 2024, before her trial. "And it's sad to me that people who don't even know me have this idea of a monster when they think of me."

In September 2020, Ashley shot and killed her husband, Doug Benefield, at her mother's home in Florida. Though she claimed it was self-defense and that he had a history of abuse, prosecutors alleged that she wanted to have sole custody of their daughter, per CBS News. Some of Doug's family believed her motives were financial.

The jury found Ashley not guilty of second-degree murder but guilty of manslaughter, and she was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Here's everything to know about where Ashley Benefield is now.

Ashley and Doug married 13 days after they met in 2016

Doug and Ashley Benefield.

Less than two weeks after they met at a Republican campaign event in August 2016, Doug and Ashley tied the knot. The two had a 30-year age gap.

Doug had been previously married to Renee Cousar Benefield, his second wife, who died in 2015 of a heart condition called coronary artery sclerosis, per CBS News. They had welcomed a daughter, Eva, in 2001.

Cracks in Ashley and Doug's marriage surfaced quickly, and she alleged to Vanity Fair in a 2021 interview that he had punched their dog and fired a gun into their ceiling during some of their arguments. After she became pregnant, she became suspicious that her husband was trying to poison her and that he had also previously done so to his late wife, per 48 Hours: The Case of the Black Swan.

By the time their daughter, Emerson, was born in March 2018, Ashley had left Doug in South Carolina and had moved in with her mother in Florida.

In 2020, Doug was shot twice inside his mother-in-law's house

Though Ashley initially hid Emerson's birth from Doug and continued to claim that he had poisoned her during her efforts to retain sole custody, the couple eventually reconciled, per Vanity Fair. In May 2020, they had planned to move to Maryland, and months later, he rented a moving truck to bring her belongings from Florida.

While they were packing up on Sept. 27, 2020, Ashley shot Doug twice in the arm and leg, though one bullet also entered his chest, and fled to a neighbor's house. She was still carrying the gun and claimed that her husband had attacked her.

The 58-year-old was taken to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries. Per an affidavit obtained by PEOPLE, Doug's entry wounds suggested that he was not facing Ashley when he was shot.

Ashley claimed self-defense, citing years of abuse

In November 2020, Ashley was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter, per CBS News. She pleaded not guilty, alleging that Doug had been controlling and abusive during the entirety of their six-year marriage.

"He would throw things or break things or smash things," she said on the stand during her 2024 trial, per 48 Hours. "He would come at me like he was gonna hit me. He told me I was lucky that he punched walls instead of me."

Prosecutors argued that Ashley fabricated the stories of Doug's abuse, including the poisoning claims, in an effort to keep him away from their daughter. His cousin Tommie told PEOPLE in November 2021 that she was financially motivated to kill Doug, saying that he was "her mark."

"She found him at his most vulnerable," he said. "She took his money, his peace, and eventually she took his life. And he loved her until the end."

Where is Ashley now?

In December 2024, Ashley was sentenced to 20 years in prison, plus 10 years of parole. The former ballerina was previously held at Homestead Correctional Institute, but has been moved to Lowell Correctional Institute in Ocala, Fla., per the Florida Department of Corrections.

She sought a new trial in 2025, alleging that one of the jurors used a flip phone in court and shared information outside the courtroom, WWSB reported.

Ashley was moved to disciplinary confinement for alleged battery on a correctional officer in January 2026, per CourtTV.

Ashley will be eligible for release in 2044.

Netflix has a little something for everyone this March.

The streamer is bringing back beloved series like Virgin River and One Piece for more storytelling and surfacing new ideas in the thriller show Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen and fresh reality dating concept, Age of Attraction.

If you're really trying to escape into the screen, Netflix is also premiering an erotic show called Vladimir with Leo Woodall and Rachel Weisz in rather compromising positions. Finally, the streaming giant is delving into new territory with Blue Therapy, a series much like the beloved Couples Therapy, in which people in relationships bare their problems to the world in hopes of doing more than just entertaining the masses.

Here's every show you need to watch on Netflix in March 2026.

Blue Therapy (March 4)

Showtime's Couples Therapy with Dr. Orna Guralnik shocked viewers at first in bringing cameras behind the therapist's closed doors to sit in on couples' sessions but the format became beloved. Now, it is time for Netflix to get in on the nuanced drama, with its own signature flair across the pond.

In this stripped back British show, Blue Therapy, couples sit in front of Karen Doherty and attempt to bare it all and solve their relationship problems. Bring the tissues!

Vladimir (March 5)

Woodall and Weisz sizzle in this new series about a professor who falls in lust with her colleague. The affair threatens every part of her life but she still struggles to tamp down her desire. Vladimir, named for Woodall's character, unpacks themes of obsession and showcases an epic crashout as it happens.

Weisz' character questions (often directly to camera, à la Fleabag) why she can't just have what she wants. It is a good question, indeed.

A sold-out crowd of 17,335 fans at Seattle's Climate Pledge Arena broke the U.S. attendance record for a women's hockey game on Friday night.

In the first game back from the Olympic break for both PWHL teams, the host Seattle Torrent fell 5-2 to the Toronto Sceptres.

The Torrent played without captain Hilary Knight, who led the U.S. women's team to a gold medal in the Milan Cortina Olympics. She was placed on long-term injured reserve due to a lower-body injury she suffered during the Games.

The previous record of 17,228 fans came on Jan. 18 when the Montreal Victoire faced the New York Sirens at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

The Torrent also broke their own attendance mark, set when 16,014 fans filled the Seattle arena for the expansion club's inaugural home opener on Nov. 28, 2025.

Overall attendance across the PWHL for the league's third season was up 17 percent through 61 games at the Milan Cortina Olympics break, according to the league.

Scrubs is back! In new interviews, the cast opens up about returning to their roles for the revival

Sarah Chalke and Zach Braff, who play Elliot Reid and J.D., explain why they support their characters' divorce, which is revealed in the premiere

Donald Faison and Judy Reyes also react to how their on-screen relationship landed in the new season

The Scrubs OGs are back, and their lives are looking a little different.

The medical comedy's revival debuted on Wednesday, Feb. 25, and it revealed what John "J.D." Dorian (Zach Braff), Christopher Turk (Donald Faison), Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke), Carla Espinosa (Judy Reyes) and Dr. Perry Cox (John C. McGinley) have been up to 16 years since the original series concluded.

The cast recently spoke with PEOPLE about stepping back into their beloved roles and shared how they felt when they learned where their characters find themselves today.

"As we talked about coming back and what this show would be, I wondered where [creator] Bill [Lawrence] would decide that we start off," says Chalke, 49, whose storyline included one of the more shocking updates when it is revealed that Elliot and J.D. have divorced.

While the split might be upsetting to some, Chalke admits that she actually supports it.

"I think having them be divorced was such a great way in, because if they're happy and they're just fine, there's not a lot of room for comedy and drama in that," she says. "There's much more room to play when they're figuring out how to be around each other, who they're going to be to each other, how to co-parent, how to work together and be in the same work environment again. So I thought that was such a great way to choose to go."

Braff, 50, agrees, noting that it made more sense for Turk and Carla to remain together than J.D. and Elliot.

"It's good to show one that really works better than ever and one that didn't, and I think a lot of people can relate," he says, "That's what happens in the real world."

"I think a lot of people would be upset if it were the other way around, if Turk and Carla were divorced and J.D. and Elliot were still married," Faison, 51, adds. "I think they got it right. If we're going to go back to the way Scrubs was before, this is a very important dynamic to have them be competitors, as well as friends and lovers."

Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes and Donald Faison

On the other hand, Faison says he's glad he and Reyes, 58, (who points out their "incredible chemistry" on-screen) can also portray a healthy couple.

"I love that Turk is still married and still in love with his wife. I mean, that's how I am," he notes. (Faison has been married to his wife CaCee Cobb since 2012.) "I think it's important to show love on television. I think it's important for people to see successful relationships and successful marriages."

While brainstorming the new season, Lawrence explains that part of what made Scrubs so special in its initial run from 2001 until 2010 was its ability to make people feel so many different emotions in one episode. The choice to ultimately break J.D. and Elliot up contributed to that sense of bringing reality back to the show.

"If you're going to jump ahead almost 20 years, as somebody that his life has jumped ahead 20 years, your dreams don't all come true," Lawrence says. "We were like, if you look at Carla and Turk's relationship, they probably stood the test of time. And if you look at J.D. and Elliot's relationship — spoiler — they never went more than an episode and a half without being incredibly contentious. They weren't a great couple."

Since 1996, there have been seven movies in the Scream franchise

The new installment stars Neve Campbell, reprising her role as Sidney Prescott

For nearly 30 years, horror fans have been shocked by Ghostface, making the Scream movies one of cinema's most iconic slasher series.

The franchise continues to thrill audiences decades later, with the latest installment, Scream 7, hitting theaters on Feb. 27 — featuring a new generation of victims, as well as some familiar faces like Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell.

The first movie premiered in 1996 and turned the slasher genre on its head. It poked fun at traditional horror tropes, had meta-references to the film industry and made its own rules that kept audiences guessing. Scream turned Campbell into a bonafide Scream Queen and has since launched seven sequels as well as a TV series that also centers around Ghostface but doesn't tie into the movies.

One of Scream's biggest changes to the horror formula is it didn't have just one "Final Girl" and instead had three main protagonists, with Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers and David Arquette's Deputy Dewey Riley joining Campbell's Sidney Prescott as the franchise's leads.

Throughout the follow-ups, the Scream movies have featured several famous actors facing off against Ghostface as well, including Drew Barrymore, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Emma Roberts, Patrick Dempsey and Jenna Ortega, among others.

With the release of Scream 7, now is a great time to start watching (or rewatching) the franchise. Here is everything to know about where to stream every Scream movie.

Scream (1996)

The original Scream movie centers around high school student Sidney Prescott and her friends who live in the small town of Woodsboro, Calif.

One night, a popular girl at school (Barrymore) is brutally killed at her home, and the town soon learns that her murder was just the beginning of a killing spree perpetrated by someone wearing a black robe and white mask, known by fans as Ghostface.

It also becomes apparent that Sidney is the main target, and the film's twist ending sets the stage for all the Scream sequels to come.

In Scream 2, Sidney is now in college and Hollywood has made a movie about her ordeal in Woodsboro called Stab. Sidney's life is thrust into chaos once again when a copycat killer arrives on campus and starts killing her friends one by one.

The first sequel has a huge ensemble cast that includes everyone from Jada Pinkett Smith to Timothy Olyphant, Sarah Michelle Gellar and even Tori Spelling and Heather Graham as stars in the fictional Stab film.

Scream 3 took the franchise to its most meta place yet. This time around, the movie takes place in Los Angeles during the production of Stab 3. But after the film's actors start getting murdered, Sidney, Gale and Dewey find their way to L.A. to investigate.

Scream 3 has a lot more humor than the previous films and takes numerous swipes at Hollywood and horror sequels. It also features cameos, like a scene-stealing performance by Carrie Fisher.

The cast include Parker Posey, Jenny McCarthy and Scott Foley.

Scream 4 (2011)

After Scream 3, the franchise went on an 11-year hiatus before returning in 2011. Scream 4 brought the series into the modern age with smartphones, streaming and social media.

The movie picks up on the 15th anniversary of the Woodsboro killings when Sidney just so happens to be in town promoting her new self-help book. Naturally, a killing spree kicks off yet again, forcing her to stay in town and find out who the killer is. Dewey and Gale also make their way back to help.

In addition to the original leads, other actors featured include Adam Brody, Rory Culkin, Alison Brie and Hayden Panettiere.

Following Scream 4, the franchise took another 11-year hiatus, with viewers wondering if Scream would ever return. But in 2022, Sidney, Dewey and Gale returned to Woodsboro once again after a young girl, Tara Carpenter (Ortega) is violently attacked by someone wearing the infamous Ghostface mask.

Tara's sister Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barerra) also comes back to town and the two learn that they're intricately connected to Sidney's past.

Joining the legacy characters in the self-described "requel" is a new generation of cast members, including Jack Quaid and Jasmin Savoy Brown.

Scream VI (2023)

After surviving the events of the previous movie, Tara and Sam now live in New York City and Tara attends Blackmore University. But their new life is quickly ruined when an individual donning the Ghostface mask starts rampaging through the Big Apple.

Cox was the only legacy actor to return for the sixth film and Scream 4's Kirby (Panettiere) also reprised her role.

The latest movie in the franchise, Scream 7, was released in theaters on Feb. 27.

In it, Sidney has built herself a new life in Pine Grove, Ind., with her husband Mark Evans (Joel McHale) and their daughter Tatum Evans (Isabel May).

But Sidney once again goes into high gear when Ghostface targets her child and despite believing there's a quick end to the violence, everything is not as it seems.

Apart from Campell reprising her role, Cox comes back as Gale, Arquette as Dewey and Matthew Lillard as Stu Macher. Brown and Mason Gooding also reappear from their previous installments.
