2026 Oscar winners predictions: Who will win at the 98th Academy Awards?

- The 2026 Oscar nominations changed the state of the race. Now, see EW's winner predictions.

- Timothée Chalamet, *Sinners*, *One Battle After Another*, *KPop Demon Hunters*, and more are top contenders.

- Conan O'Brien returns as 98th Academy Awards host on March 15.

After decades of ignoring horror films at large, the 2026 Oscars have rewritten the sins of Academy Awards history by anointing Ryan Coogler's *Sinners* as the most-nominated movie of all time. But will the feat be enough to push it into the Oscars' winners' circle?

At the end of 2025, things seemed buttoned up for Paul Thomas Anderson's thriller *One Battle After Another* to steamroll the season. While that's still a realistic scenario, cross-branch support at the Oscars (to the tune of a landmark 16 overall nominations) indicates collective passion might've shifted toward *Sinners* in recent weeks.

Tying the prior record for most nods by one film (14) is an impressive feat, as *La La Land* managed to do for the first time since 1997's *Titanic* back in 2017. But *Sinners* not only met the challenge, it surpassed the benchmark by two, meaning every eligible branch that could vote for the movie, did.

Now is not the time for any contender to lose momentum, whether it's real interest among voters or even falling a few places back in the Oscars publicity machine. *One Battle* has, effectively, dominated the conversation for months; now, with attention shifting back to *Sinners* following its monumental box-office run, enthusiasm could jump ship from Anderson's latest as Coogler's genre masterwork rises in its place.

There's also a narrative fueling *Sinners'* resurgence, with Coogler helming a predominantly Black cast en route to just under $370 million at the global box office, all for an original story with no foundational source material. That kind of audience appeal is something Hollywood desperately needs right now, amid the age of what many consider to be a bleak era of sequel-soaked, IP-driven slop.

2026 Oscar nominees: Jacob Elordi, Timothée Chalamet, and more

2026 Oscar nominees: Jacob Elordi, Timothée Chalamet, and more.

Our prediction might change back to *One Battle*, the "safer" choice (at least statistically, up to this point), but we expect *Sinners* to generate even more traction at SAG's 2026 Actor Awards, where the film will likely earn the top competitive honor for its ensemble. There, the film also earned five individual nods from the largest Hollywood union — a group that shares huge crossover membership with the Academy.

On paper, though, *One Battle *managed to outdo *Sinners* at the Actor Awards, earning at least one nomination in every Actor Award category (including for its stunt ensemble) — and two for Supporting Actor contenders Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn.

At the Oscars, however, the acting winners feel virtually secure. Timothée Chalamet's performance in *Marty Supreme* cleaned up at most precursor awards ceremonies (including the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards), as has Jessie Buckley's leading turn in *Hamnet*. *One Battle*'s Teyana Taylor is also in a safe spot, with her track record showing resilience in the later stages of the race.

Oscars

Supporting Actor, however, feels less assured. Yes, Stellan Skarsgård triumphed at the Globes (and the all-important European Film Awards showered *Sentimental Value* with love at its annual ceremony), but Jacob Elordi's work in *Frankenstein* is the most physically transformative turn in the bunch. If he wins with SAG voters (as the populist group often heralds more commercially friendly, starrier performances), expect the *Euphoria* star to repeat at the Oscars.

On the directing side, Anderson's "overdue" narrative might also feel stale by the time Academy members cast final ballots, and they might opt to herald Coogler's innovative vision behind *Sinners *instead*.*

Before the 2026 Oscars winners are revealed Sunday, March 15, during the ABC telecast, read on for **'s full list of 98th Academy Awards winner predictions.**

The opening moments of *Zootopia 2* almost looked very different.

In a deleted scene from the film, which ** can exclusively reveal above, co-directors Jared Bush and Byron Howard explain the change before showing the original beginning.

"In the final film, we open up our movie by looking back at where we left off with Judy and Nick in the first film," Bush explains. "But in this early version, we began on a boat with a band of smuggling schemers being paid to bring something to town. The twist is that what they were smuggling in was actually a mysterious snake."

Bush continues, "Ultimately, that scene did not fit within the overall structure of our film, but it was really fun to explore, and we are now excited to share it with you."

The deleted scene begins in a foggy night at sea, on a massive ship helmed by various rodents.

One is reading a newspaper with articles about the upcoming 200th Zootennial Celebration and a headline reading, "How the Founding Families Created Four Seasons in One City," all of which foreshadow later moments in the final film.

This rodent receives a text message with a strange symbol, prompting him to ask, "Is it all there?" He then opens up a briefcase to find smaller rodents swimming in cash, who inform him that they counted all the money twice. It's all very ominous until they start throwing a little rodent party to celebrate all of their new wealth.

Gary De'Snake (voice of Ke Huy Quan), Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman), Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nibbles Maplestick (voiced by Fortune Feimster) in Walt Disney Animation Studios' "Zootopia 2." From the Oscar®-winning team of Disney Animation chief creative officer Jared Bush and Byron Howard (directors) and Yvett Merino (producer),

Gary De'Snake, Nick Wilde, Judy Hopps, and Nibbles Maplestick are on the case in 'Zootopia 2'.

Unbeknownst to them, while they're celebrating, a mysterious figure clad in all black has knocked one of the shipping containers off the ship and into the water. On shore, the figure opens the container to reveal a snake, and the two jet off together, presumably toward the Zootennial gala.

The clip is one of several deleted scenes and bonus features that fans can enjoy on the digital and physical release of the film. *Zootopia 2* arrives Jan. 27 on Digital platforms, including Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. The im-paw-fect partners' undercover escapades continue with the film's arrival on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on March 3.

Ultimately, as the directors alluded to, *Zootopia 2* actually picks up right where the first film left off: With bunny Judy (Ginnifer Goodwin) and fox Nick (Jason Bateman) still getting used to being partners in the Zootopia Police Department (ZPD). Their new partnership is put to the ultimate test when they find themselves on the twisting trail of a mystery tied to the arrival of a venomous snake in the animal metropolis.

******Like its predecessor, *Zootopia 2* could not be tamed at the box office. In addition to overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics, the film grossed $1.657 billion worldwide, making it the third-highest-grossing animated film, the second-highest-grossing film of 2025, and the eleventh-highest-grossing film of all time. It's also been nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2026 Oscars.**

28 Years Later (2025)

Ralph Fiennes as Dr. Ian Kelson in '28 Years Later'.

Miya Mizuno/Columbia

Danny Boyle's *28 Years Later *proves the franchise still has a lot to say. Released 18 years after *28 Weeks Later* (2007), the third installment in the postapocalyptic horror series is set on one of the British Isles, where a community has flourished, isolated from the more evolved versions of the infected that still terrorize the region. The film follows 12-year-old Spike (Alfie Williams), who must contend with his mother's growing illness and his father's inability to help her.

Writer Alex Garland and director Boyle reunite for the first time since *28 Days Later *(2002), and their collaboration meditates on British culture and isolationism in a post-Brexit, COVID-impacted world. The film's sequel, *28 Years Later: The Bone Temple*, is currently playing in theaters. *—Ilana Gordon*

Aliens (1986)

Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley and Carrie Henn as Newt in 'Aliens'

Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley and Carrie Henn as Newt in 'Aliens'.

James Cameron's follow-up to Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi horror film *Alien*, the sequel *Aliens* — released after years of delays and development apathy — picks up where its predecessor left off. After more than half a century in stasis, Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is rescued and agrees to accompany her employers on a mission to an exomoon to exterminate the creatures that destroyed her former ship and murdered its crew.

But when this mission goes similarly awry, it's up to Ripley to help evade the aliens and find a path back to Earth. The film earned Weaver an Oscar nod for Best Actress, and her performance as an action star was credited with elevating the film beyond typical B-movie fare. The movie also helped establish Cameron's Hollywood reputation as a craftsman with a talent for pacing action films and a nose for employing the newest technology and visual effects. *—I.G.*

The Babadook (2014)

Essie Davis as Amelia Vanek and Noah Wiseman as Samuel Vanek in 'The Babadook'. Matt Nettheim/IFC Films

Long before he became an unexpected gay icon, the Babadook was delivering visceral scares that simultaneously pulled on our heartstrings. The movie constantly makes us question whether the central troubled child (Noah Wiseman) is truly connected to a storybook monster, or if he — and perhaps even his mother (played to chilling perfection by Essie Davis) — is declining psychologically. This is a particularly bleak and scary movie for parents, suggesting we can never keep our children fully safe and stable. —*Chris Snellgrove*

Bring Her Back (2025)

Jonah Wren Phillips as Oliver and Sally Hawkins as Laura in 'Bring Her Back'

Jonah Wren Phillips as Oliver and Sally Hawkins as Laura in 'Bring Her Back'.

Ingvar Kenne/A24

A24 knows how to handle horror, and in *Bring Her Back*, they take audiences on a terrifying ride through grief, gore, and the occult. From the directors of *Talk to Me* (2022), *Bring Her Back* is an Australian film about processing trauma and the lengths to which people will go to hang onto their loved ones.

After their father dies unexpectedly, stepsiblings Piper and Andy move in with Laura (Sally Hawkins), an eccentric woman who is also fostering a mute child named Oliver. Critics were quick to praise the film's performances, especially Hawkins' work as a deranged foster mother, and fans of *Goodnight Mommy* will find that *Bring Her Back *scratches a similar itch. *—I.G.*

**Cast:** Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, Jonah Wren Phillips, Sally Hawkins

Carnival of Souls (1962)

Candace Hilligoss as Mary Henry in 'Carnival of Souls'

After an accident pushes their car off the road, Mary (Candace Hilligoss) awakens on the banks of a river in Kansas with no memory of how she got there or what happened to her friends. Puzzled and shaken, Mary proceeds with her plans to move to Salt Lake City, where she's been hired as the new organist at a local church. But no matter where Mary goes, mysterious events, creepy people (including one played by the film's director, Herk Harvey), and sinister spirits seem to follow.

Watching *Carnival of Souls* today feels like witnessing a slew of Easter eggs before they've even happened, as many genre filmmakers have been inspired by the haunting imagery, gothic music, and ending that continues to baffle even decades later. An EW critic writes, "More than just scary, it's arrestingly *odd*, with a bats-in-the-belfry 3-a.m. loneliness that you plug into like a private dream." *—I.G.*

Carrie (1976)

Sissy Spacek as Carrie in 'Carrie'

Sissy Spacek as Carrie in 'Carrie'. Everett Collection

*Carrie* was the one that started it all, not only for Stephen King as a novelist but also for the long line of film adaptations of his work to come. While said adaptations are of varying quality, few would argue with the strength of Brian De Palma's take on this story of high school outcast Carrie White (Sissy Spacek), who uses her telekinetic powers to exact revenge on the bullies who torment her.

While the film is not reliant on traditional jump scares, the psychological buildup of *Carrie* enduring the horrors of high school, as well as her religious zealot mother (Piper Laurie, camp excellence), makes the iconic prom climax all the more satisfying. Plus, it's not every day that the Oscars acknowledge horror performances, with Spacek and Laurie earning nominations for their fully committed work. —*Kevin Jacobsen*

Creep (2014)

Mark Duplass as Josef in 'Creep'

Mark Duplass as Josef in 'Creep'.

Blumhouse Productions/Duplass Brothers Productions

Longtime horror nerds know that Blumhouse has a mixed bag of films. Fortunately, director Patrick Brice's *Creep* is one of the better treasures in that trove, following a cameraman (played by Brice himself) who takes a Craigslist job that involves recording an off-kilter dying client (Mark Duplass) as an artifact for his unborn son. This setup makes for a refreshing and stripped-down found footage film. Trust us: Even if you normally hate the format, you'll love this bonkers tale that mines much of its scares from a surprisingly psychological angle.

As Duplass told EW, the collective vibe of this movie was, "Let's just make it super weird and make it the crazy little monster that it is." The result is an eye-opening exercise in terror that will especially impress those who think the subgenre peaked at the onset with *The Blair Witch Project*. —*C.S.*

Get Out (2017)

Jordan Peele turned the horror movie genre on its head with *Get Out*, his feature directorial debut. Daniel Kaluuya stars as Chris Washington, a Black man whose trip to meet his white girlfriend Rose's (Allison Williams) family goes awry when he realizes he is not in a safe place. *Get Out *is a satirical horror film whose social commentary only works to heighten the terror, and Peele blends genre tropes with subtle observational humor to create a revelatory look at modern race relations. His screenplay won an Oscar and the admiration of EW's critic, who wrote, "He's made a horror movie whose biggest jolts have nothing to do with blood or bodies, but rather with big ideas." *—I.G.*

YouTubers will do a lot of questionable things for views, but in *Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum*, one channel's livestream ends with more of its participants dead than alive. A South Korean found footage horror film set in the Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital, the movie follows a web series creator and the six people he recruits to explore the abandoned building. Drawn to room 402, the former intensive care unit, the group encounters supernatural entities they can't explain and danger they can't escape.

Based on the real-life Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital — a South Korean asylum that was considered one of the country's most haunted buildings before it was demolished in 2018 — the film starts off slow, but will have you lunging for the lights by the time the ending arrives. *—I.G.*****Where to watch *Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum*: Amazon Prime Video******Director: **Jung Bum-shik******Cast:** Wi Ha-joon, Park Ji-hyun, Oh Ah-yeon, Moon Ye-won, Park Sung-hoon

There is no shortage of creepy twins in horror ("Come play with us, Danny!"), and the most terrifying example from recent memory is in Austria's *Goodnight Mommy*, which premiered in 2014 at the Venice International Film Festival and was released theatrically a year later. A psychological horror story, *Goodnight Mommy* follows two 9-year-old twin boys who begin to question their mother's identity after she returns from intensive cosmetic surgery as a seemingly different person than the parent they once knew. The boys commit to ousting the imposter and finding the location of their real mother, but their investigation leads to truths too horrifying to process.

A remake starring Naomi Watts arrived in 2022. Feel free to binge both versions, but definitely start with the original. —*I.G.*

Lake Mungo (2008)

Martin Sharpe as Mathew Palmer in 'Lake Mungo'

Martin Sharpe as Mathew Palmer in 'Lake Mungo'. Lionsgate

Given that everything natural on the continent is designed to kill you, Australia seems an ideal setting for a scary movie. But in the psychological horror film *Lake Mungo* — set in Ararat, Australia — the fear isn't born from external foes, but rather from the terror required to succumb to the depths of human feeling. *Lake Mungo* begins with the accidental drowning of 16-year-old Alice Palmer. Upon returning home, her brother Matthew believes he sees Alice's ghost, but further investigation from the Palmer family reveals that Alice was seeing premonitions of her death.

Far from providing closure, the family begins to realize that the more they learn about Alice's personal life, the less they understand about what happened to her. Shot in mockumentary style and incorporating elements of found footage, *Lake Mungo* is, at its core, a horror movie about human behavior and navigating grief. *—I.G.*

M3GAN (2023)

M3GAN in 'M3GAN'

M3GAN in 'M3GAN'. Geoffrey Short/Universal Pictures

It is a truth universally acknowledged — at least in horror movies — that dolls are terrifying. But forget Chucky and Annabelle, because M3GAN isn't your average genre villain. Designed by Gemma (Allison Williams), a professional toy roboticist, M3GAN is powered by generative AI, packaged in a childlike body, and designed to be a loyal companion to the kid formally paired with her.

Unfortunately, the playmate takes her role as protector very seriously, and when Gemma becomes the caretaker for her recently orphaned niece, Cady (Violet McGraw), M3GAN goes rogue. Now facing off against an uncontrollable robot with a penchant for murder (and viral dance moves), Gemma and her co-workers must find a way to power their creation down forever — or risk dying at her hands. A horror comedy that never takes itself too seriously, *M3GAN* is self-aware, murderous, and seriously entertaining. *—I.G.*

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

The cast of 'Night of the Living Dead'

The cast of 'Night of the Living Dead'.

George Romero thought *Night of the Living Dead* would be a "one-off," but his seminal zombie flick has persevered to fundamentally shape the modern horror landscape. The *Dead* franchise spawned numerous entries and imitators, most notably *Dawn of the Dead* (1978) and its well-regarded 2004 remake, and one of the most successful TV series of this century arguably wouldn't exist without his low-budget lark.

Named one of EW's scariest movies of all time, Romero's slow-burn, documentary-like approach to the apocalypse is as mundane as it is violent; the end comes not with an explosion, but the slow encroachment of our dead loved ones. Notable, too, is Duane Jones, a Black actor, as the film's protagonist, not to mention the film's final moments, which resonated deeper than Romero would ever have imagined. As he tells EW upon hearing how much his film had impacted Frank Darabont, co-creator of *The Walking Dead*, "It's still hard for me to realize how influential that film was." —*Randall Colburn*

Robert Eggers finally got to direct the story he's always wanted to remake with this haunting gothic horror drama. Based on 1922's *Nosferatu*, which was itself an unofficial interpretation of Bram Stoker's *Dracula*, the Victorian-set film follows a woman named Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp) who has an abnormal psychic connection with a faraway vampire, Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård).

Things escalate when Ellen's husband, Thomas (Nicholas Hoult), accepts an opportunity to sell Count Orlok a manor in town, and the parasitic vampire's arrival spells doom for the townsfolk. Unsettling and graphic with an undeniably dark romantic draw, *Nosferatu* is one of the most elegantly made horror films in recent years. —*K.J.*

The *Predator* monster has terrified audiences for nearly 40 years, but in the story's prequel/fifth installment, the tables turn and the monster becomes the prey. The film follows Naru (Amber Midthunder), a Comanche warrior with the heart of a hunter, who seeks to prove her skills and protect her tribe by catching a predator. Professional basketball player–turned–horror star Dane DiLiegro plays the film's eponymous villain and says the story is strong enough to win viewers over, even without its affiliation to the beloved horror franchise.

In an interview, he tells EW, "There just happens to be a Predator involved. Honestly, you could have shot this movie with a different monster and it still probably would have worked." If you're in the market for a solid action thriller that still makes time to flesh out its main characters, sink your teeth into *Prey*. *—I.G.*

A Quiet Place (2018)

Emily Blunt as Evelyn Abbott and Millicent Simmonds as Regan Abbott in 'A Quiet Place'

What if cottage core could kill? That's the implicit question posed by *A Quiet Place*, a film in which writer-director John Krasinski and Emily Blunt must raise a family on the road. But it's not by choice: Society collapsed after the world was invaded by violent creatures who cannot see but track prey through sound, making any sudden noise or wrong move a near-immediate death sentence. (The 2024 prequel, *A Quiet Place: Day One*, covers how all this started…)

It's an inventive premise that won over EW's critic, who wrote that Krasinski "has conjured a taut, breathless little trick of a movie around it: 90 minutes of slow-drip dread and well-earned jump scares that dissipate" and that he "builds a sustained mood in ways that feels both modern and pleasingly old-school, with its shades of *Close Encounters of the Third Kind* and other '80s touchstones." —*C.S.*

Psychological thrillers don't come much darker than the French Canadian film *Red Rooms*. Kelly-Anne is a model and online poker player who has become fascinated with a local murder trial. Every day she shows up at the courthouse to watch Ludovic Chevalier prosecuted for the alleged murder of three teenage girls whose deaths were recorded and distributed as snuff films on the dark web.

When Kelly-Anne meets another true crime voyeur named Clementine, the two women bond over their shared fascination with the trial. But the longer the trial goes on, the deeper Kelly-Anne finds herself journeying into the internet's most terrifying spaces in search of more information about the killer and his victims. A slow burn crime thriller told through the eyes of an enigmatic lead character, the film turns the mirror on the audience, asking them to reconsider their relationship with true crime, and the victims and criminals involved. *—I.G.*

Rosemary's Baby (1968)

Suburban horror is effective because no over-the-top movie monster can be more menacing than one's nosy neighbors. *Rosemary's Baby** *(which is a powerhouse for Mia Farrow and supporting actors like John Cassavetes) is the terrifying tale of a very pregnant woman who, after moving into a new apartment, discovers something sinister is happening in both her building and her body. That domestic threat is all the more frightening because it lurks beneath a saccharine veneer. —*C.S.*

Sinners (2025)

Michael B. Jordan as Smoke and Miles Caton as Sammie in 'Sinners'

Michael B. Jordan as Smoke and Miles Caton as Sammie in 'Sinners'.

*Sinners *picked up just about every Oscar nomination possible (a record-breaking 16) and for good reason: The period horror film has so much to offer, it's hard to know what to highlight. Written and directed by Ryan Coogler, *Sinners* stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as twin brothers Smoke and Stack, who return to their hometown in the Mississippi Delta to create a juke joint for the Black community. But when the spot's music is powerful enough to summon supernatural forces to its door, the bar's patrons struggle to survive their night of revelry.

Set in 1932, the first half of the movie is a compelling drama about gangster brothers returning to the South and confronting their past loves and hopes for the future. The second half — a bacchanalian, gore-filled night of singing, dancing, and vampire attacks — is both gripping and terrifying. The acting, casting, and music are excellent, making *Sinners* a must-see movie. *—I.G.*

Smile (2022)

Sosie Bacon as Rose Cotter and Jack Sochet as Carl Renken in 'Smile'

Sosie Bacon as Rose Cotter and Jack Sochet as Carl Renken in 'Smile'. Paramount Pictures/Everett

Horror is a bit like history: Even when it doesn't repeat itself, the genre very often rhymes. That's the case with *Smile*, a scary movie in the same vein as *It Follows *(2014), making the most out of a monstrous force that is passed along and possesses people in unexpected ways.

The cast (particularly Sosie Bacon and Jessie T. Usher) does a great job livening these characters, who are instantly out of their depth when confronted with all this grinning ghoulishness. EW's critic deems first-time director Parker Finn "a pleasingly nervy stylist, letting the camera tilt and flip at seasick angles and ratcheting the tension as he goes." —*C.S.*

Demi Moore takes on her best role yet in *The Substance*, a body horror satire about celebrity, aging, and Hollywood's pressure on women to look perfect. Moore stars as Elisabeth Sparkle, a Jane Fonda-esque TV personality who is fired from her aerobics show when she turns 50. To save her career, Elisabeth takes a single-use substance that creates Sue (Margaret Qualley), a younger version of herself. But when Sue and Elisabeth struggle for control over Elisabeth's body and life, it's unclear who will win. Moore's work on the film earned her an Academy Award nod for Best Actress, and *The Substance* comes well-recommended by critics and filmmakers for its fun script, audacious execution, and clever premise and performances. —*I.G.*

Talk To Me (2022)

Sophie Wilde as Mia in 'Talk to Me'

Accepting a helping hand is not a good option in *Talk to Me*, a film about a preserved extremity capable of temporarily possessing those who touch it. Mia (Sophie Wilde), a 17-year-old still mourning the loss of her mom, discovers the hand has the potential to reconnect her with her mother's spirit, but the quest opens the door for disastrous consequences.

A film from Australian filmmakers, twins Danny and Michael Philippou, *Talk to Me* was a hit at Sundance and quickly added to A24's roster. Appreciated for its gory practical effects and grounded performances — particularly from Wilde and young actor Joe Bird — *Talk to Me* is a horror story about the ways in which grief and trauma make us vulnerable. —*I.G.*

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

Gunnar Hansen as Leatherface in 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre'

Gunnar Hansen as Leatherface in 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre'. Everett Collection

One of the forebears of the horror genre, *The Texas Chain Saw Massacre* built the sadistic road map followed by many modern films — the *Saw* and *Hostel* franchises among them. A movie that prompted nine sequels, and inspired 2022's *X*, this '70s torture film only needs a chainsaw and a face mask sewn from human skin to drive its viewers into spasms of terror.

Following a group of young hippies who visit an old family farmhouse and end up encountering the home's murderous next-door neighbors, EW calls *The Texas Chain Saw Massacre* the "template for modern horror." As EW's critic writes, "What *Chain Saw* channeled, far more than any other horror film of its time, was the dementia, the terrifying insanity, of violence. It made you feel like you were really experiencing what it was like to be murdered." *—I.G.*

Weapons (2025)

Julia Garner as Justine and Josh Brolin as Archer in 'Weapons'

Julia Garner as Justine and Josh Brolin as Archer in 'Weapons'.

Quantrell Colbert/Warner Bros. Pictures

Another one of 2025's top horror projects, *Weapons* is the second film for writer-director Zach Cregger (*Barbarian*). Julia Garner and Josh Brolin lead an ensemble cast in this story about a class of children who mysteriously go missing — and the people they left behind. While not officially intended as a metaphor for school shootings, it's hard not to notice the parallels.

Garner stars as Justine, the kids' teacher, and Brolin appears as Archer, the father of a missing child. Cregger divides *Weapons* into six chapters, each told from the perspective of one of the main characters, and the film's structure, eerie cinematography, and a particularly excellent performance from Amy Madigan as Gladys transform *Weapons *into a terrifying and emotional horror mystery. *—I.G.*

Where to watch *Weapons*: HBO Max

Ahsoka (2023–present)

Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano on 'Ahsoka'

Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano on 'Ahsoka'. Lucasfilm Ltd.

In the wake of the fallen Empire, double-lightsaber-wielding badass Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) is hoping it stays down. The former apprentice to Anakin Skywalker is on a mission to find the Machiavellian Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) in the hope of preventing another Empire uprising. Dawson's steely resolve helps anchor the series, with strong support from Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Ahsoka's reckless former apprentice Sabine and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as General Hera Syndulla.

While *Ahsoka* enjoys some familiar *Star Wars* tropes, from lightsaber battles to themes of good vs. evil, it's also quietly revolutionary — within the world of live-action *Star Wars* anyway — in centering a trio of women working together for the good of humanity. —*Kevin Jacobsen*

Wei-Chen, as it turns out, is looking for an item that would prevent cosmic devastation, and he needs Jin's help to do so.

The five-time Emmy-winning *Andor* demonstrates how you don't need wink-wink references and retreads of familiar plots to be a successful series within the *Star Wars* universe. Diego Luna reprises his role as Cassian Andor, first introduced in 2016's *Rogue One*, as he goes from orphan on an abandoned planet to one of the key figures in the Rebel Alliance.

Also a Peabody award winner, *Andor* was created by writer-director Tony Gilroy, whose previous credits include *Rogue One*, as well as the original *Bourne* trilogy and *Michael Clayton*, and his expertise in action and espionage is on full display here. Much praise has been heaped on the series for its grounded approach and relevance to real-world conflicts. —*K.J.*

Peter Jackson's stunning three-part documentary shows the world's biggest band falling apart at the peak of their popularity. After a string of meticulously produced albums and a long touring hiatus, the Beatles circa 1969 return to their roots by making a record the old-fashioned way: four lads sitting in a room together writing music and willing new songs into existence. Despite their unparalleled success, the band finds itself backed into a corner — they must write, produce, and perform a new album in just a few short weeks in time for a televised concert special. Charlie Cox reprises his role as blind lawyer Matt Murdock, who has retired his vigilante persona, Daredevil, but finds himself drawn back in when villainous crime boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) becomes the mayor of New York City. *Born Again* is a worthy follow-up to its original series, deepening its themes of corruption and justice with Cox and D'Onofrio continuing to deliver committed performances. *Goosebumps* has haunted young readers (and viewers) for decades, and this new adaptation for Disney+ updates R.L. Stine's creepy tales for the *Riverdale* generation. Taking on a season-long storyline rather than the anthology format of the '90s TV series, *Goosebumps* follows a group of teens who are haunted by the ghost of another teen, Harold Biddle. After attending a party at the Biddle family's home, they start to unravel the mystery behind Harold's tragic death — and how their parents might have something to do with it. The witty horror comedy takes inspiration from Stine's most memorable stories, from a haunted mask to Slappy the Dummy, while also charting its own path as a commentary on the anxieties faced by high schoolers today. —*K.J.*

Marvel's oft-forgotten original Avenger Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) teams up with ambitious young archer Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) to take down a New York crime organization at Christmastime. The show is one of Disney+'s few superhero series that viewers can appreciate even if they're not well-versed in the ever-expanding universe of Marvel lore. *Hawkeye* stands on its own because it focuses so intentionally on new characters like Bishop and antagonist Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox).

*Hawkeye* is Marvel's "most consistent on an episode-by-episode basis," asserts EW, because it's unusually grounded for the franchise. The characters get a lot of downtime between missions to hang out, eat mac and cheese, and have charming conversations about what it means to be a hero. —*W.S.*

Narrated by Angela Bassett and directed by Leslie Iwerks of *The Pixar Story*, this docuseries follows the evolution of the Disney parks from Walt Disney's earliest ideas to their newer additions, like *Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge*. *The Imagineering Story* highlights the corporate drama, engineering ingenuity, and, most importantly, creative collaboration that shaped the Disney Parks into global behemoths.

The series features unprecedented access to the "happiest place on Earth," taking us into the legendary rec room inside the Matterhorn and the vast network of underground tunnels that provides infrastructural support. What do X-wings, melting Nazis, flying bicycles, a liquid metal robot, and a charging *T. rex* all have in common? They're some of Hollywood's most iconic special effects — and they were all created by a small group of innovators at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), the special effects division of Lucasfilm. Lawrence Kasdan's docuseries tracks the rapid evolution of the entertainment industry through the illustrious work of this one company.

Though ILM's technological achievements are stunning to behold, the documentary's real joy comes from uncovering the passionate personalities that have quietly revolutionized the film industry. Tom Hiddleston as Loki and Sophia Di Martino as Sylvie on 'Loki'. Marvel Studios

With *Loki*, Marvel's iconic trickster finally gets center stage — alongside a slew of variants. The heady series finds an alternate version of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) who didn't — as depicted in *Avengers: Infinity War* — die at the hands of Thanos, contending with the bureaucratic Time Variance Authority, who offer him the option of getting the Sacred Timeline back in shape in exchange for sparing his life. He takes up the mission, discovering that another variant of himself is rebelling against the TVA.

The series explores the concepts of identity, free will vs. determinism, and the gray areas of good and evil, with Loki's connection with Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) — his female variant — proving to be the show's strongest emotional through-line. —*K.J.*

Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin/the Mandalorian on 'The Mandalorian'.

Francois Duhamel/Lucasfilm Ltd.

Amalgamating cowboy movies, samurai stories, and episodic sci-fi serials, *The Mandalorian* feels both like a natural extension of George Lucas' early work and something completely new. Set five years after the events of *Return of the Jedi*, *The Mandalorian* follows an enigmatic bounty hunter (Pedro Pascal) on his adventures as he encounters new and familiar faces, including Greef Karga (Carl Weathers), Kuiil (Nick Nolte), and Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito).

One might think that a show which requires its main character to wear a helmet for 95% of his scenes might suffer from an emotional disconnect, but one of the series' greatest strengths lies in Mando's commanding physical presence. He's cool, sympathetic, and, in spite of his costuming, somehow still expressive. —*W.S.*

Like *Shazam!* and *Spider-Man: Homecoming*, *Ms. Marvel* is a teenage coming-of-age comedy first and a superhero story second. The series follows Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), a bubbly Captain Marvel superfan who obtains powers of her own, but finds they don't automatically solve the problems she faces at her Jersey City high school, and at home with her tight-knit Pakistani American family.

Boasting a similar aesthetic to *Scott Pilgrim vs. the World* and *Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse*, the first episode of the series features many more visual flourishes than we're used to seeing in the MCU. Kamala's thoughts appear as colorful animated sketches and text messages seamlessly integrate into the background of numerous scenes. —*W.S.*

The Muppets leap into the digital era with a new format that targets kids who might prefer YouTube over standard broadcast. The six-episode series updates the variety show structure of the original *Muppet Show* for modern times: Instead of straightforward sketches and performances, each episode consists of several loosely connected segments that imagine each Muppet as the star of their own web series.

Each mock-series highlights the strength of its respective star — Miss Piggy is a fashion and pseudo-wellness guru, the Swedish Chef has a cooking program, Honeydew and Beaker blow stuff up, and Statler and Waldorf judge it all via a digital focus group. The series is chaotic, but it's a unique experiment that playfully lampoons the norms of the social media age. —*W.S.*

Rick Riordan's book series has had multiple adaptations over the years, but none got it quite as right as this Disney+ series. Unlike the film adaptations of the early-2010s, the TV show is faithful to the source material — likely due to Riordan's involvement as a co-creator. *Percy Jackson and the Olympians* follows Percy (Walker Scobell), the demigod son of Poseidon whom Zeus accuses of stealing his Master Bolt. He must go about finding the thunderbolt in time with the threat of war weighing down on him. Despite these big stakes, as EW's critic observes, "*Percy Jackson*'s biggest achievement is how it makes Percy's coming-of-age story feel every bit as epic as the legends from Mount Olympus." Season 2 just wrapped up on Jan. 21, and the third season is expected to air before the end of 2026. —*K.J.*

Star Wars: Visions (2021–present)

With *Star Wars: Visions*, Lucasfilm enlisted seven Japanese animation studios to produce whatever short stories they wanted in a galaxy far, far away. The anthology isn't restricted by the main series canon — instead, each episode tells a wholly original story while drawing from the ideas, designs, and sounds that make *Star Wars* so unique. Some of the best installments are the ones that are furthest from typical *Star Wars *conventions: "The Duel" imagines a Jedi-Sith face-off in the style of feudal Japan, while "T0-B1" follows a kid droid (who looks a lot like Astro Boy) on the path to becoming a Jedi himself. —*W.S.*

WandaVision (2021)

Marvel's first series for Disney+ proved to be a home run, for long-term MCU fans and casual viewers alike. Following the events of *Avengers: Endgame*, Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) creates an idyllic suburban world with Vision (Paul Bettany), in which they live comfortably...until the artifice begins to show. Following classic TV sitcom tropes, their reality continues to shift, with clever homages to *The Dick Van Dyke Show*, *Bewitched*, *The Brady Bunch*, *Malcolm in the Middle*, *Modern Family*, and more. What starts as a fun trip through TV history eventually reveals itself to be the MCU version of a woman processing her grief. *WandaVision* earned critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including 23 Emmy nominations and three wins. —*K.J.*

The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse (2020–2022)

Mickey (voice: Chris Diamantopoulos) and Minnie Mouse (voice: Kaitlyn Robrock) on 'The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse'. Disney+

*The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse* is a modern cartoon with old-fashioned flair that reinvigorates the iconic rodent by bringing him back to his roots. The series can be viewed in any order, with the first season composed of 20 unrelated episodes all under 10 minutes in length, while the second is comprised of four 22-minute specials.

Each episode is full of kid-friendly slapstick violence and mean-spirited comedy, giving the series more in common with *Looney Tunes* and Tex Avery than with squeaky-clean Disney fare. It's also a loving tribute to the era of traditional animation, with retro designs and brief guest appearances from classic Disney characters, including Dumbo, Cinderella, and Ursula (voiced by Pat Carroll in her final role). —*W.S.*

Marvel Animation

While anxieties over the future of Marvel continue as *Avengers: Doomsday* looms, this revival of *X-Men: The Animated Series* is certainly a step in the right direction. Tapping into the nostalgia for the beloved '90s cartoon with a more modern sociopolitical edge, *X-Men '97* picks up where the original left off as the X-Men try to figure out a path forward without their leader, Professor Charles Xavier. Complicating matters further, Charles has bequeathed his school to his frenemy Magneto. With mature storytelling and a clear fondness for the comics and original series, *X-Men '97* is one of Marvel's best projects of the decade thus far. —*K.J.*
