A person in Missouri has become the first American to be diagnosed with H5N1 bird flu without coming into contact with animals, in a potentially worrying development. They are the 14th person to become infected in the US since the strain hit livestock earlier this year - but the first not to have been directly exposed to an infected bird or cow. It is still unclear how the Missourian was infected, but experts have been warning for months against drinking raw milk because of fears the virus can spread to people via this route.
